I am on my third 40lb bag since switching Mocha over to Canidae ALS. I just opened this bag last week. I have noticed that there are two shapes of kibble in this bag. The typical round pieces, that have been in the other bags, and some cross shaped pieces. The first time I saw one of the cross shapes, I just took it as a fluke, but just about every scoop has at least one in it. The color and consistency seem to be the same in both. I would almost suspect the cross shapes to be used for cat food or something.???
Anyone else seen this? Sorry the picture isn't the greatest - it should get the idea across though.

I would call Canidae and ask. I had this happen with another brand of dog food once. I kept getting "toy surprises"... pieces of dog food & cat food, different shapes, different colors, which REALLY annoyed me since Grip has some food sensitivities and this was supposed to be a chicken & rice food with no artificial colors, flavors, etc. and the random pieces were almost fire engine red in color.
I was sent coupons for free bags of the food to replace the ones I had.

That's the shape of their cat food. Call them though and I bet they'll make it up to you with a refund or something.

Apparently the startup run after a switchover always contains some of the previous run. Since it doesn't match the nutrient guarantee, it is not allowed to be sold as pet food so the first batch goes as "salvage" animal feed (pig feed, sometimes). If there is quite a bit of the cross shaped cat food in your bag, it sounds like a pretty big "oops", and you ended up with salvage. They'll definitely give you your money back.
Good photo, by the way! :) Interesting that the two cross shaped pieces look different from each other.

Okay, I called Canidae and explained the situation. The Customer Service Rep knew exactly what I was talking about and offered the following information:
1 - It is not cat food. The Felindae food is about the same shape as the Canidae dog food, but is about half the size - very small round bits. I confirmed this with a relative of mine who feeds Felindae. Secondly, they run the cat food on a different line so it is virtually impossible for it to cross over.
2 - It is the remnants from a previous batch/run. The cross shaped pieces are the shape of the dog food they use for export. It is a different shape so they can distinguish between the Domestic product and Export product. When they end one run and switch to the next, there is typically a small amount that transfers over. She assured me it is the exact same formula and has the same nutrition content.
3 - They suggested that if it concerned me in any way, to take it back to the place of purchase and return/exchange it.
We are just going to use it. The pieces all look identical in content - at least the color and bits that are in it, so I have no real reason to not believe the Customer Service rep.

Interesting, I could have sworn when we fed our cat the Felidae it WAS cross shaped.
