View Full Version : Canidae, NB or Solid Gold
Noel's Mom 10-15-2007, 01:09 PM Another question...sorry.
I've been feeding my 3 Canidae for a couple of months, but I have to drive a ways to get it. I noticed that they sell Solid Gold and Natures Balance at Petco which are also good brands. I liked the fact that Canidae is ALS due to the age differences in the dogs, but if either NB or Solid Gold is supposed to be better I don't mind switching. Noel has (used to have) yeasty ears so I need the wheat and corn free.
I noticed that the Solid Gold and Natures Balance cost more, but not really when you figure in the cost of gas to go get the Canidae.
Any opinions?
LuvLabs 10-15-2007, 01:16 PM Couldn't hurt to try. You can always switch back to the Canidae and the long drive if it doesn't work out. :)
mtn.menace 10-15-2007, 01:17 PM Can you order Canidae online? I just switched to Canidae and it is awesome! Indie's poop went from soft to firm in a day and that was just adding a 1/4 cup a day! So far I love it less gas and no soft serve!
CanyonLabradors 10-15-2007, 01:31 PM Out of those 3, Solid Gold is the best. Petco sometimes carries Avoderm, which is a good food too.

I can order Canidae online, but then you have shipping which is more than I would spend on gas. Mine have done good on Canidae, but it hasn't helped with the gas at all LOL. I thought it was Noel because I smelt it at times when she was near, but this morning Max was standing beside me and I HEARD him! I wouldn't be changing because I'm having issues with the Canidae. I would be changing because of the convenience factor as long as I'm still feeding them a good food that they do good on.
CanyonLabradors, I did see Avoderm there, but I didn't realize it was one of the premium brands. Now I gotta research 3 instead of two.
I may switch them as JimmysGal suggested. I've got about 20 lbs of Canidae left and can make a gradual switch by buying a smaller bag of which I decide to go with.
I hate driving. I sit in traffic 5 days a week. Takes me about 45 minutes in the morning and evenings to drive 15 miles to work and home. Last thing I want to do on weekends is spend another hour and a half round trip to pick up dog food. Petco is like 5 miles away.
mtn.menace 10-15-2007, 02:53 PM That is so funny that you heard him!!! YUCK
angelia77 10-15-2007, 02:59 PM my pup did not do good on the solid gold puppy. She didn't do too hot on the innova either...Maybe those puppy foods were too rich for her? On Canidae now and problem free!
I do have some friends who feed their adults solid gold without problem.
Katie's Mommy 10-15-2007, 08:14 PM Katie ate NB up until just a few days ago. She did great on it, we just switched her to the Canidae ALS to see if she has any allergies to stay away from and if she could have a little less flaky coat. Plus the NB is $10 more expensive, and both are easy to get for us.
I haven't done much research on the Solid Gold, but from what I've heard it's also a very good product :thumb4:. Good luck in finding something that works for you!

3lablady 10-16-2007, 12:32 AM I like Canidae but really like California Natural which is by Natura.
Baylee's Daddy 10-16-2007, 04:45 AM Currently I'm still using Bil Jac per recommendation of the breeder (I got it to get Baylee more comfortable at home since the breeder uses Bil Jac for her dogs), but I'm planning on switching to Canidae ALS. Luckily for me, there is a local pet store 2 miles from my house that stocks it. They tout themselves as the #1 dealer in the Northeast. And the 40 lb bag is only 34 bucks there! On top of that, my local Petco is a 15 mile ride. Hence another reason for switching.
Nalas Daddy 10-16-2007, 09:17 AM Nala is on Canidae and she really seems to like it although I was speaking with the lady at the store the other day and was thinking of switching it up just to give Nala something different. She recommended California Natural but I have also heard good things about Solid Gold.

do you believe that solid gold is the best based on ingrediants? im curious because i have duncan on Eagle pack and just started switching him over to Canidae based on ingrediants and testimonials from here as well. Thanks

Eagle Pack Holistic is real good. I had that before but because it was more expensive and only one place had it I went to Canidae and now I use Calif. Natural which is really good. If Eagle Pack worked for Duncan I'd stick with it.
cabinlady 10-16-2007, 11:12 AM I may have to switch from Canidae. Sophie never ate her own poop until I started feeding her Canidae. It must be so good she likes it the 2nd time around, but she didn't to that on Nutro. She did like Ginger's though!

thats the thing...i dont know if its working for him anymore or if its something else.
he isnt crazy about his food like he used to be.
It used to be that when i put it down it was gone in 30 seconds or so.
now sometimes he doesnt even touch it but will eat it at a later time (i pick up the bowl if he doesnt eat it)
he has been scratching alot more ...by his neck ears, and someimes he bites at his tail.
he has had ear infections and his ears get red fairly often now. I have cleaning solution i use when that happens and it seems to help.
The only other thing he eats are eggs a couple of times a week (whole raw) and once or twice a week a marrow bone.
I was thinking that since canidae is a single protein source that might help.
Plus i figured he has been on this for a year or so and maybe its a good idea to switch it for a little while at least instead of feeding him the same thing all the time.
3lablady 10-16-2007, 01:05 PM That's too bad it's not working anymore. Have you tried the California Natural?
Mom2Hershey 10-16-2007, 01:48 PM I have Hershey on Canidae and he loves it and I do too. Lucky for me I can get it at a local surplus store and a few agway/feed stores.

i havent tried anything else yet....is calif natural a better quality food? was it involved in the recalls?
Noel's Mom 10-16-2007, 07:33 PM I was looking at the Solid Gold and it's like 41% Protien. Isn't that to high for 12 months?

It's a really good food and not involved in the recalls. Here's the link to Natura products. http://www.naturapet.com/

Before you change his food, maybe you should stop giving him eggs and the marrow bone. I don't know the ingredients in the food your feeding him, but he could be sensitive to the eggs and/or any beef that could be on the bone (?). Were you supplementing his food before, when he was enjoying it? He may not feel too good if he has developed sensitivities to something in his diet. If you stop supplementing with the egg and bone for a couple of weeks and he improves, you might deduct that it was the egg or bone causing him problems. A food doesn't have to be given everyday to cause a problem. You can still change foods later, or maybe you won't want to. Good Luck.
g'smom 10-17-2007, 06:57 AM Nutro Ultra is good and you can get it at Petco. I fed it up until a week ago when my big guy wouldn't eat it anymore. G likes it but I want them on the same food. We are currently mixing it with Chicken Soup. We tried solid gold and Natural Balance and had no luck.
coopers mom 10-17-2007, 01:04 PM Cooper was on Solid gold wolf cub/wolf king and I found it to be a very good food.

Hitch 10-23-2007, 12:50 PM We love SG (Bkg at Moon) the best and have been thru many foods. CC does poorly w/ corn, wheat, etc. and the list goes on. she did amazing on SG for a yr - but, needed a change. We change her off every 8 mos or so and alternate with SG BATM, Calif Ntrl Chicken and just tried CORE. I don't like it as much as SG though - but a good break food for CC. We'll do CORE another 2 months or so then back to SG BATM.
Good luck!
