Just found this link on the Canadian Lab Website for inherited diseases of our breed and thought you might find it interesting. Many other breeds as well.

Unfortunately its not current enough to take in Exercise Induced Collapse... But the other info was great. Thanks for posting this! :)

Sent an email to the contact person to see how they regard EIC, it may not be considered and inherited disease, that is why there is no mention of it, or it could be conected to one of the heart diseases.

It's not heart related and is genetic, although they haven't been able to get the link established exactly as of yet. Dr. Susan Taylor is studying it indepth. Ty has donated his blood sample to the study... Every other physiological test Ty has passed with flying colors.

Thanks Labracorn, however I have already seen that and probably everything on the internet to date! ;) I have done my research! I even have the Oct 2004 update on the study that was sent to me by Dr. Taylor.

The article that you posted was the article that finally gave my vet and I a course of action since ALL of Ty's tests were perfectly normal. :)

Sorry it wasn't more help for you. I was impressed with the fact that I had answers so quickly from the university. You may want to contact them and see if they have anything else they could offer.

Not an issue- I actually have Dr. Taylor's email and have gotten two updates as the study progresses... It's just hard to wait until they actually figure something out. :( I know it takes time but I admit, I do get impatient!

I do appreciate your help, and I agree: that was seriously FAST action on the part of the university! :)

Wow. What a huge difference between greyhounds and labs. With greyhounds being one of the oldest breeds - thousands of years - its astonishing their list of inherited diseases is so small.

Very interesting read, labracorn. Thanks.

I was surprised that Hystiocytomas (sic) weren't listed. My vet told me that Labs were prone to them before the age of 1.

That's probably because hystiocytomas are diet and allergy, and immune system related, not inherited. Our Zoe had one removed when she was nearing a year old.

Where did/does your Lab have his/hers?

Hanford had one removed from the top of his head about 4 inches behind is right eye and he had one on his chest. My vet said it was rare for there to be two of them in two separate places. He said if he developed another he would remove it for free, apparently that is how confident he is that he won't develop another one.

They seem to have left out " Nasal Parakeratosis" Which is common in Labs. Bruno has this and it is really hard to find anything on it. When you search it the same article comes up over and over:rolleyes: . Very interesting website though, thanks for the link.
