I just bought Max & Leeloo some canned Mackerel, but don't have any idea how to feed it to them. Do I mix it with kibble? Give it to them w/rice? I don't have a clue.

I mix mine with their kibble - I know some people give it to them alone as a meal. I just feed a little less of the kibble and a half a can per dog - they gobble down the kibble so fast it amazes me.

Thank you! I won't hesitate to mix it tonight. I'm sure they will love it! Is it like tuna? Does it need to be drained?

Yes - and it smells to high heaven! Rinse it well with water before you give it to them - it is loaded with salt.

We just feed it straight out of the can to Buddy. I didn't think to rinse it, thanks for sharing that Shantis Mom.

When we do give it to Buddy, our cat goes bezerk! We have to give him a few spoonfuls too! Talk about being spoiled, the cat now EXPECTS it. Every time he hears a can opener, he comes bounding into the kitchen to see if it is his "fish"

I can only find Canned Mackerel in TOMATO SAUCE in supermarket here.
Ingredients shown : Mackerel, Oil, Tomato, Salt.

It's okay if I drain and wash out tomato sauce before giving it to my boy?

I opened the can and then.... there were filet slices and they still had the bone. I did not give to them. When I would touch th bone it would disintegrate, but I didn't want to risk it. What brand should I look for? Or was that ok? The one I had bought was chicken of the sea.

Give some to your cat too! I'm always THRILLED when I can get my girls to eat "real" food.

If the mackerel is in vegetable oil is it okay to give them the oil as well?

We've never given mackerel to Zoe because she used to hiccup from fish, although that was before her homemade diet so it will be interesting to see if she still does. We're going to try it on her soon.

We are going to try some tonight. I don't think I could it eat it myself, the smell is too strong.

Mine LOVE their mackeral meals! Last night I gave each of them a can of mackeral, a cup of green beans and a tbsp of rice/quinoa mixture. They eat their homemade meals with SUCH relish!

I just bought 10 cans of mackeral of 79 cents and 10 cans of Sardines for 50 cents a can. They are going to get their weekly fish mean for a while! :D

What is "rice/quinoa mixture"?

I just cook white rice because it is one of the grains that Tyson is fine with. ZenCat was talking about Quinoa being the wonder grain so I picked some up last time I was at the whole foods market. I'm curious to see if the quinoa is digestible by Tyson because he cannot digest brown rice.

Quinoa is a small grain that looks a lot like millet and you cook it like rice. I'll let you know how it goes.

Most of the weekly meals for my dogs consist of kibble but I try to include about 2 meals a week that are whole food meals. :)

That's exactly what I buy for our two. I just rinse it well and split it between the two - there's usually 4 big pieces in the can so I just put 2 in each bowl and I mush it up with my hand only because I don't want them to "enhale" the whole piece at once.

I have given mackerel to Kenai twice. Both times he had terrible diahrrea (the second time he was in his crate)!!! Does this mean he's allergic to it (or something in it)? Tara didn't have any problems.

Thanks,
Trina

That's too bad. Do you remember what it was packed in? Mine is packed in water, and I always rinse it to remove the extra salt. I don't know if it comes packed in other things (I'm wondering about soybean oil) the way sardines do. My dogs get diarrhea from soy.

It was canned in water. The first time I didn't rinse it, but the second time I did. I haven't tried any other fish, just in case.

BTW - he does fine with salmon oil on top of his kibble.

Max loved his canned Mackerel! I mixed it with white rice and green beans. He ate all of it! Leeloo nibbled at her plate. When I got them back together they did the usual, checking out each others plates. When Leeloo realized Max had finished his and was now eating hers, she ran back to her plate, but Max would move around so she couldn't get any. Silly Max I had to call him away, so she could eat her share and she did! It made me feel real good. Now I'm off to see what else I can feed them. I left their kong filled with Apple & Yogurt yesterday, this morning when they saw me getting an apple, they carried their Kong to me... :) Today, they got apple & peanut butter.
