i was watching a show on Animal Planet earlier today and saw a guy give his dog a carrot... i was wondering if it is ok to give dogs a carrot for a snack

There certainly isn't anything wrong with giving dogs carrots as treats. Heck, mine get all sorts of healthy, whole human foods as treats.

Just a side note, if you're feeding veggies for the nutritional aspect - dogs can't break down the cell walls in veggies, therefore, they aren't getting any nutritional value from consuming them. For a dog to get any nutrition from veggies, they must be ground, cooked, or frozen at one point (if I remember right, freezing does break the cell walls).

thanks for the info, should i feed my dog frozen veggies or freeze them, thaw them and then feed the veggies to her

Feeding them frozen won't be a problem. Its completely up to you and your dog how you serve them. If your dog doesn't mind them frozen, then you can feed them that way.

I usually just give mine uncooked, unfrozen carrots as treats. I know they aren't getting anything from the raw carrots, but they love 'em either way. Every now and then I'll cook up a batch of mixed veggies for the dogs. Granted, cooking does deplete some nutritional value - but they're getting more from the cooked ones vs. raw. I don't have any way of grinding the veggies up for them (which is the best route to go).

We do raw carrots for treats, snacks, etc so my older gal won't plump up. They eat em up...we also do slices of apples and bananas too.

Most fruits are okay. If you do a search above (i.e. grapes) you will find more. Of course, our labs will eat anything.

Another note on the carrots - not only does cooking allow for more digestion, but raw carrots have a tougher time in the intestines, if you know what I mean. ;-)

And yes, Calvin loves apples, bananas, carrots...

Beware, though, if your dog does end up liking this stuff, you'll never eat these items again without lots of drool from your dog. Calvin can smell a banana a mile away - I swear.

Tanner loves carrots, apples and bananas. -It's a win, win situation...he likes them, I usually have them in the house, and I don't have to worry about him getting too many calories!:p:

I give Rufus and terra all our left over veggies ( just so I don't feel like I am wasting them) They love green beans , I use them as training treats , I don't give them corm though, so it usually just carrots, green beans and peas, oh and broccli , but I have to give the cats first dibs on that, cause I have a cat Idgit who will steal it of your plate if your not careful.

i wouldn't even have thought of feeding Copper fruits and veggies... come to think of it i didn't... but it is good that she will get some nutrition from these foods, and it might even help me to start eating more fruits and veggies... once again, thanks for the feedback and info :D

Bailey may just become a vegitarian. I feed my two guinea pigs fresh veggies and fruit twice a day. He begs for what they get, and I end up giving him carrots, apples, bananas, and cucumbers!!!

Murphy love to chew on carrots.

My only advice is, give it to the dogs outside. Murphy doesn't eat all of the carrot, but he does chew the entire carrot into littte bits. It makes mess, but he loves it.

As I was reading this thread, I looked over and saw my husband putting carrots in a soup he was making. I read him a couple of posts and we decided to see what Kes would do with a carrot.
Here is a picture of her thinking about eating it.
Well, she finally ate it and really liked it and wanted more.

Thanks for this great idea !!

My labs love all kinds of fruits and veggies- fruits, carrots, watermelon, grapes....in fact the only things they won't eat are canned pears.

They even like sauerkraut- yuck!
