View Full Version : Chicken Soup for the Dog lovers soul

Sophie

Sophie has been eating Chicken Soup for the puppy lovers soul and every now and then I put a tablespoon of plain yogurt in her bowl. Her vet said the yogurt will help with calcium production, but I've noticed her poo isn't solid. Its not runny just soft. The kind of soft that makes its quite difficult to pick up at a dog park :( Should I switch her food? Also the farts my little monster has are disgusting.

Major had the same problem with the soft stools on this food as a puppy. I ended up changing his food, but in retrospect, I think we were just feeding him too much. Even though we followed the bag, that's not always right for every dog. If you're following the directions on the bag, try reducing it a little and see if that helps. If not, then I would consider changing the food, but that's a last resort to me because that roller coaster can be a very frsutrating ride for a very long time!

My lab puppy did very well w/CS but my big dog did not.
Its a good food for a reasonable price so I'm disappointed it isn't going to work

I have Bulldogs so it may not work the same for your guys but I started my litter on Wellness Puppy but it just didn't work, really runny ppoh's, then switched to Chicken Soup for puppy, the poohs improved but not all of them liked it so I moved over to Healthwise (Innova) Chicken and Rice Puppy food, their coats improved, great weight, they all liked it and great poohs plus I'm paying $37.00 for a 35 lb bag. I'm getting the same good results with the adult food.

How much are you feeding? How old is Sophie? You shouldn't add calcium to a pup's food intake because too much calcium is not good for a pup.

I'm feeding my 5 month old puppy Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul and she is doing great on it. I do agree with someone else on here that you may want to feed him less. But I'm no dog expert! (:

3 things to try

less food
no yogourt
switch foods
Since you already have the dog food, I'd stick with the same amount of food but stop adding the yogurt. If that doesn't work, I'd reduce the amount of food and then finally I'd switch foods if the above 2 changes don't work.

Note this is just what happened to milo when he was on Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul (also note I HATE that name) he went through two of the largest bags.

He had soft STINKY poos. The kind that when you went to pick up with the bag did more harm than good I like to say. I do not like this food very much. I just do not trust Diamond as a whole really.

Farts too.

I tried to switch my labs to CSPS and my choco had such bad gas you could not even be in the same room!!! I'm trying them on Natural Balance now. Not 100% satisfied yet, but giving it time. I notice they are shedding more on NB. But also could be the time of year

One of the major reasons I stopped freeding Canidae, besides the forumula change, was that Canidae sold out to Diamond. Diamond is too big to produce a quality food and many of the foods they make have had recalls on them. Smaller dog food companies, IMHO, make a better quality food.

I tried Chicken Soup with Charlie shortly after I got him. Same thing - soft poop. Too many ingredients for Charlie so we switched.

My adult dog who did not do well w/the CS has suffered soft stools, goopy eyes and the itchies on various foods.....including CS. CS does not have corn, wheat or soy but it does have barley. After doing some more thinking I realized the foods she had done best w/did not have barley -the dogs are now eating Eagle Pack Holistic Chic/Rice and she is doing very well as is the puppy.

The one food we did try that did not have barley but still caused mushy stools was CN chick/rice...but I didn't try it very long and may have been a bit richer than she was used to

This is untrue. Canidae did not 'sell out' to Diamond. They simply contracted with Diamond to have their food manufactured in some of Diamond's processing plants, to expand their availability.

We had no luck either. The dogs had soft poop and went two or three times at each walk. I actually wrote to Diamond at CS and told them what a wonderful product they would have if only it was fine tuned. They replied that I should try Kirkland. They said it was similar.

It is a kitchen sink food....wonderful for dogs who can process all the different ingredients...

If a food like Chicken Soup does not work....you go the opposite direction... a more simple food....

If you want to stick with a Diamond product look at their Naturals....less ingredients.http://www.diamondpet.com/products/diamond_naturals/

I know this was posted a long time ago, but I just looked at it again.

What does that mean??? I'm just curious.

Harleigh was on the puppy formula and had soft stools (no gas though), I just recently switched her to the Adult formula and she is doing great on it. Her skin looks near perfect, except with a minor flea allergy that is going away with the new flea medicine.

It's what I can afford. Since I'm still in high school & I pay for everything of Harleigh's... I think I do pretty good.:D

The term "kitchen sink" formulas typically means that there are a ton of different ingredients used. There's probably lots of different meat proteins and a variety of grains sources. If a dog doesn't have sensitivities that's no problem then.

My DD and her DH have fed Chicken Soup Adult to their 2 dogs with much success. They've also used Healthwise (by Natura) which is reasonably priced around here at $36.50 for a 35 lb. bag. It has similar protein and fat, but a simpler ingredient list. It's main ingredients are: chicken meal, oatmeal, brown rice, chicken fat and pea fiber.

OK, to all of you that INSIST everyone feed Natura b/c they are the BEST in dog food. What is one to do if they cannot afford the price of these products? I have seen time and time again posts about how food x is crap and food b is even worse but food C, which costs $35 or more a bag, is the best. Please, do tell? Because there are MANY people who cannot afford a dog food that costs that much. And please don't tell me that if they can't afford good food then they shouldn't have a dog, because that's insulting, especially during these economic times. Oh, and I'm not talking about myself, I feed EVO.;)

Sorry, I'm just sick of these dog food threads. :p:

You're doing great, if not fabulous, your boy looks happy and healthy...that's what's important.

Dont feel bad, I fed my late Malamute Nature's Recipe all through high-school cause it was all I could afford too.

Food isn't the only thing that matters in a pups life; some could feed the best food available, but unless that dog's getting everything else it needs; i.e. good exercise, good healthy yard, etc. food doesn't mean everything.

Chicken soup has worked great for my 15 month old after Fromms and Diamond Natural was not so great...to each his own I guess:)

I *recommend* Natura products IF the dog does good on any one of them; I don't insist.

Thing people seem to forget, and it's easy to because Natura doesn't advertise their formula Healthwise as much as the other formula's...but Healthwise is very cheap price wise and yet very good quality....it can be difficult to find though.....which makes it hard yet again.

If I couldn't afford Natura products, I'd be feeding either Avoderm/Breeders choice or Blue Buffalo, both can be found at Petsmart for around the same price as other foods in the store.

Avoderm is incredible, they are an excellent mid-grade food that never seem to get much acknowledgement on this board. At one time that was the only food that my last big girl could digest without issues.

Evo and Orijen both are very expensive, that I'll definitely agree to...as I couldn't afford to feed either one of them solely to my big guy. Now if he were to eat it in rotation with something else, I could afford it. But not entirely.

When I did that thread about what each member pays for their k-9's monthly food bill; many people purchasing Diamond foods were paying quite a bit more a month then I do...and I have 3 dogs too. I feed Cal natural puppy along with pre-packaged raw from Stella's.

My average each month is around $50-70/monthly with feeding the cal natural because it is higher kcal/cup based then most foods which really helps with overall food costs even though the bag itself upon initial purchase might be more, it does go a lot further then the TOTW food I was feeding prior.

I'm not sure if your response is specifically directed to my post directly above yours or not. If so, the reason I highlighted Healthwise by Natura is because it's almost the same price as the Chicken Soup the original poster is feeding. It's another option if someone needs to look for a more simple formula.

In my area: Chicken Soup is $32.99 for 35 lb. bag
Healthwise is $36.50 for 35 lb. bag
