View Full Version : Cocoa eats once a day, or sometimes twice
C & C's Mom 09-12-2005, 05:31 PM Is this normal? There are times she will not touch her morning meal (like today), and then chows at night.
There are times she will eat both her morning and evening meal.
Chad on the other hand eats both meals every single day with vigor (I am wondering if this is because he had a hard time finding food after he was abandoned).
Do any of your Labbies pick and choose how many meals they will eat per day?
Thanks in advance.
Jenson's Mom 09-12-2005, 08:33 PM Jenson always eats what is put in front of him, but he doesn't go crazy at mealtimes. Other dogs that I've known (especially Labs!) seem to wear a watch and know exactly what time their dinner should be served!
Darcy 09-12-2005, 08:50 PM I might get a :nono: scolding :nono: for this, but my labs eat when they want to, i put food down in the morning when i get my breakfast, and they usually eat around lunch time. Then after they're done I put more down and they dont' eat again until dinner time. Pretty much there is always food in the bowl. We've never had a problem with them overeating or getting sick. They even eat out of the same bowl (here comes the lecture :nono: ) but honestly, they both will lay down by the bowl and eat together, even picking up what the other drops, but never fighting, growling, anything.
We've always done this with our dogs, 5 dogs total, (3 previous) 2 present. And never had a problem. Of course they were seperate when they were eating their puppy foods, but once they were on the same food they did fine sharing. I think it keeps them both in tune, neither has ever shown any Alpha characteristics......they know i'm in charge :)
4myboyz 09-13-2005, 07:34 AM I am so glad to hear that my Max is not the only lab who doesn't eat consistently. He is now 2, and we have tried not giving him breakfast, and he won't eat supper, and we have tried feeding him just in the PM, and he nibbles. I had always heard that Labs gobble their food, so I was concerned, but he has done this since he was a puppy.
limey 09-13-2005, 08:02 AM Sam tends to pick at his breakfast - usually finishes it off at noon - and will 'usually' eat his dinner with gusto.
I take him for a walk in the mornings and feed him after - doesn't make him any hungrier!
miskeira 09-13-2005, 08:05 AM My crew gets fed twice a day. I've never had any trouble with them not eating.
C & C's Mom 09-13-2005, 09:24 AM Thank you for the replies. She has never been one to always walk up the the bowl every time I put it down for her. Even since a tiny pup, she will eat some, walk around the table and kitchen island, take a few more bites, walk, etc.
She just is not a "gusto" eater.
Darcy, we leave her's down for quite a bit also, because sometimes she will eat it 2 hours or so after we give it to her. At times she just will not eat until evening.
Hanford&Shelby 09-13-2005, 11:04 AM Shelby eats the second i put the food in front of her. Hanford does not eat in the morning. He only eats in the late evening, and he does NOT eat if we aren't home. I am finding that all the abnormalities i thought my dogs had are actually normal for labs. You are not alone in this one.

Every dog is different. I don't think it has anything at all to do with Chad's past, he just likes food. :) They don't hang on to the past the way we do.
Wellie was apparently a stray before i got him and he tried to get in the garbage for about two weeks after he came here. then he decided what was in the bowl was better - they bounce back nicely! :D
Sometimes he doesn't eat breakfast. Hey - he could lose a few pounds, I'm not complaining! :D
A meal schedule is good for a number of reasons - but that's another topic! :D
