Kahlua's Mom

I enjoy reading rescue stories and wanted to share mine too. Last November my husband and I were house hunting and found our dream home located on 2.5 acres with a fully fenced in yard. The house had been empty since July and there was this poor, pathetic, smelly dog living there in the garage with a water trough and eating out of an old refrigerator drawer. My husband being rather cautious of this dog, who’s name is Cowboy, stayed back from him, while I went and made friends with him… I remember thinking as we were going home that evening, I want that house and I want the dog to come with it. We had a suspicion that Cowboy would be coming with the house, however we found out for sure at our final walk through, when there was a pleading letter from Cowboy, really the pathetic owner, asking if he could stay. We know Cowboy is between the age of 10-12, however he was never allowed inside, so his years of being out in the extreme weather conditions really took a toll on his poor body. He has arthritis, cataracts and minimal nerve damage in his legs, making him stumble when he is ready to get up and go. But after a massage, he’s fine. So, my husband was not so keen on the idea until Cowboy followed him around the yard that night as if he knew to "play up to him" our realtor and I were watching from the window sharing a few tears and knew right then, Cowboy was staying. As a house warming gift, our realtor took Cowboy to the vet and had all his shots updated and had him shaved… He’s a mix of golden retriever and collie and absolutely beautiful! So now, he is enjoying his senior years inside with a loving family. We have a groomer and vet that come to us. He’s on senior food and glucosomene supplements and has greatly improved… His birthday is this Sunday Nov. 7th as that is the day he officially became ours!

We just recently adopted, Kahlua, who is now 1 year old. We adopted her back in July. She’s a pure breed chocolate and the sweetest gal ever! She was living with a 90 year old couple and ran away from them to the neighbors house who had dogs so she could play. She’s from a line of field champs and sometimes we think she’s too smart for her own good. My husband’s mom works with the lady who was fostering her until she could find her a good home. Her original owner’s just signed over her papers and said they didn’t want her. We arranged to meet Kahlua one evening with the mind set that if it went well, we would pick her up in two days, that way we would have everything ready for her… Well, 15 minutes later she was in the back seat of the car and my husband and I were just looking at each other and laughing. It was a shock to Cowboy, but she’s been the best medicine for him. He gets up goes now with her and I swear is smiling!!!

Thanks for letting me share my story about my two!
