I feed my 5mo puppy one cup 3x a day. When can I start feeding 1-1/2 cups twice a day?

When can I start feeding 1-1/2 cups twice a day? mckjen 07-22-2009, 12:05 PM In the past I've usually gone to 2x a day around 4-5 months -but w/this lab puppy I'm going to wait until around 6 months. He eats really fast and I think smaller meals are better for him even when I can slow him down. LuckyLuna 07-22-2009, 04:59 PM I've had puppies transition to 2x a day anywhere from 5 - 7 months. Many dogs will become less interested in the mid-day meal and that will be your cue. But labs don't seem to fall into that category. Lovemylabby 07-22-2009, 08:52 PM You can switch to twice a day feedings anywhere from 5-6 months old. LizzyLou 07-23-2009, 08:42 AM haha, yeah, my dog DEFINATLY isn't losing interest in food....EVER! Although I wonder if feeding him two bigger meals will actually keep him more satisfied that 3 smaller ones. Probably not, but who knows. Starting today we're doing 2 meals instead of 3. Zman1001 07-23-2009, 09:04 AM I started with 2 meals per day when I picked him up at 8 weeks. Although I now realize that this may not have been the best fit for him, it has worked very well for him and me. Throughout this period (6 weeks so far), at first, it would take him 10 minutes to eat his food, then, when he got used to it, it seemed like it was gone within the first 5 minutes. We have gone through two different periods where it would take him 45 minutes to eat his food and I would leave the morning feeding there for him, but would pick up the evening feeding after 1 hour. Now, he is back to eating everything within 5 minutes at each sitting. Who knows. |
