The food that I'm looking at has its guaranteed analysis split up like this:

Protein
Nutrient Guarantee: 14% minimum
As fed: 16%
Dry matter: 18%

I understand the difference between the nutrient guarantee and the dry matter percentage. But what does "as fed" mean?

How much protein is my dog actually getting from this kibble?

Thanks, in advance! :)

Thanks, in advance! :)We toss around a lot of numbers here, but I think this point is poorly understood by many. When looking at dog foods, the % is by weight, while in human diets, we would always look at the actual grams of protein. "Dry matter basis" is the really important number when comparing different foods - if you have the entire nutrient profile, including kcal/kg, you can figure out the actual grams of protein.
