View Full Version : Diamond Premium Adult causing loose stools?

A little background....

Could it really be that Ranger has been with me three weeks now? Nearly so, I believe that it will be three weeks on Tuesday.

I was told he was eating "Diamond" by the shelter. Bravo, because the trainer here in town (where he will eventually end up) feeds Diamond Premium Adult. So since they looked at me like I was silly when I asked which formula of diamond....I decided to just put him on the Premium Adult and not deal with the shelter (that shelter....was a disaster.)

So I decided the loose stools were because he must have been on a different formula. No biggie.

But he's STILL having loose stools! Loose, nasty stools. Yuck. Is this normal? Should I switch him to another formula? I have one small bag of Premium Adult left, so now would be a good time for me to decide to switch as I could switch him the RIGHT way.....

If this is gonna cause this many problems, the trainer will just start having to feed two foods.

Thanks!

Although premium adult is not my favorite food, my dogs ate this at the boarding kennel last year and did fine, but I don't think you'll find many fans of this partcular Diamond formula around here, since it's a by-product/corn/wheat formula ;)

You could certainly try changing to another formula - if you want to stay with Diamond, try the lamb and rice.

Just a thought before you take a ride on the dog food roller coaster - since Ranger is a shelter dog, have you ever treated him for giardia? The tests are often negative even if the dog is affected, so we usually just give a 5 day course of Panacur to shelter dogs w/ stool issues. It's amazing how often it helps.

OK, confession....

I've gotten pretty good at reading labels.

BUT, I guess I just assumed that it was a chicken base since that is what the trainer fed. I didn't bother. Tunnel vision...go in, get it, walk out. I've got the bag I just emptied last night outside, as I haven't even bought a container to put Ranger's feed in yet....I'm going to go look and see what I've been putting into my dog without paying attention. Shame, shame, shame on me.

I've been swtiching Sammy over time (from the Eagle Pack Lamb and Rice...to be more cost effective since it has always been Beau with the allergies to the wheat and not Sam...I'm going through an INSANE amount of food these days), with the same results, loose stools. Beau is the only one with decent poops around here. I'm really thinking its just the poops, but I should be seeing his vet in the next week or two and I might just run stool samples on all three....might as well, I guess. With as many dogs as they come in contact with, you just...never know.

Thanks for showing me the light....

Diamond does make a wheat, corn and soy free food..it's the lamb and rice formula...my boys do really well on it.
