Onyx has been eating Orijen Fish since March and doing great on it. His coat is amazingly shiny, ears are perfect, teeth are white, weight is average, and overall health good. The vet is very pleased with how far he as come since first getting him as a puppy.

He is 7 months old (6-1-09) and weighs just over 50 lbs. His Mom and Dad were both no more than 65 lbs full grown so we don't expect him to be a big boy. He looks lean and muscular...nicely proportioned for his size.

Anyway, he has always eaten 4 cups daily (and still looking for more) of his dry food but ever since he hit the 50 lb mark he is slowing down. He still finishes it eventually but not right away like he used to. The vet said it's normal and not to worry and that he looks great, but I just want extra opinions. Should we be cutting back his meals at this point or continue feeding him what he has always eaten?

I would cut his food down to maybe 3 cups a day and see how things go.

I'm glad Onyx is doing so well. Each dog is different, but 4 cups of Orijen at 7 months does seem on the high side. It's a very dense kibble. The calories in all the Orijen formulas are pretty similar. Luna ate Orijen Large Breed Puppy until she was 7 months and switched to Orijen Adult. At 22 months she weights 55 lbs. I don't think she ever ate as much as 4 cups of Orijen in a day; but I do remember that most dogs we've had tend to naturally start needing less food around that 7-8 month mark. Cutting back by 1/2 to 1 cup seems reasonable to try.

I agree, cut to 3 cups. At some point down the road, 2 cups may be enough. At least that is the way it has gone for my retriever.
