View Full Version : Do Breeders Ever Get Annoyed by Puppy Parents?
scout's_honour 09-04-2008, 07:46 PM ...and if so am I one of those?
I've sent 2 updates on Scout & emailed a few times to clarify things (as in age to spay, sending the spay certificate, name change, etc). I feel sometimes like I am being a super annoyance and that if we do decide to go to the same place for a second pup that he might turn us down because I'm so super involved. I can't help it, I want to do the best for my dog.
So tell me - would I annoy you? Be honest - and tell me how to change so I can be LESS annoying in the future!
CaraBella 09-04-2008, 07:48 PM Not a breeder, so :noidea: But I do know that Bella's foster mom thanks me all the time for keeping her up to date and making her feel she is still a part of Bella's life ;)
CanyonLabradors 09-04-2008, 08:28 PM I love my puppy buyers keeping in touch.
3lablady 09-04-2008, 08:30 PM I email and send pics of my guys to their Breeders and they appreciate it.
Shorewind 09-04-2008, 08:44 PM ABSOLUTLY NOT!!!! I LOVE that my puppy people keep in touch with me. I have had several back to play and boarding. I love that I have relationships with my babies" new parents and want to know how they are doing for their lifetime....Keep it up, your breeder is lucky and shouldnt be annoyed, Im sure they arent!
ALuv4Labs 09-04-2008, 08:48 PM I personally wouldn't think that any good breeder would get annoyed by that. They should want to know how their puppies are doing and be informed of any important happenings. I know a breeder friend of mine feels that way.
Breezeline 09-04-2008, 08:57 PM I love that my puppy buyers keep in touch.
I have not had an issue with any of them contacting me too much or asking dumb questions - no such thing IMO
SoCalLabLover 09-04-2008, 09:27 PM I can't imagine the breeder would get annoyed about updates and questions that ensure the proper care of a puppy they produced. It would be much better than NEVER hearing and not knowing. ;)
Lab-adore 09-04-2008, 09:33 PM We send Nittany's breeder pics once or twice per year along with an update. I always felt they were super approachable and friendly. Makena's breeder doesn't seem as plugged in so we don't bother.
I think it depends on what type of personality they have and how much they care.
ZenCat 09-05-2008, 05:38 AM I've remained in touch with our breeder (Drum's) on a regular basis since we got Drum (he will be 9 this month). She has always been supportive, comforting, and a wealth of knowledge and understanding, especially regarding some of the more mysterious aspects of greyhounds that a lot of our vets haven't really had experience with. She has assured me again and again (when I've been worried about being a pain in the butt) that she remains glad and grateful to have found such a devoted, engaged family for one of her pups.
I've also had the good fortune to find and establish contact with Grip's breeder (thanks to this board, as a matter of fact!), who was thrilled to find Grip had come to me from his original owner, and always receives my updates and news with pleasure and what sounds like gratitude.
I have to think we really lucked out on both of our dogs' breeders
scout's_honour 09-05-2008, 06:01 AM Thank you everyone, you've all made me feel a little better. I still feel as though I am even a tiny bit annoying haha, but now that Scout is spayed I don't have to email the breeder at all until I want to update him again.
ChanceyBoy 09-05-2008, 10:00 AM I also email my breeder. Mostly I just send a short email with pictures occassionally.
After our first night at home, I emailed her to say we survived! And I added in that he didn't sleep well, but that we knew it would get better. Well she replied that their kennel is always dark at night.... Well crazy me had left a nightlight on for him! Night #2 we turned all the lights off, and he slept like a baby. I am sure that we would have struggled with that for many more nights, had I not remained in contact with the breeder!
Bailey's Mommy 09-05-2008, 01:01 PM I think our breeder is fabulous! :p:I certainly don't think a good breeder would be annoyed with knowing how the ones they put so much time, effort and love into are doing. I email my breeder quite often with pics, questions or updates. He sends me pics of all the other pups from the litter and I just love it (which must mean all the other owners keep in touch with him). He even keeps up to date on what the daddy is doing out of state and his winning streaks. I commend all the great breeders on a job well done for raising the pups to sharing their wealth of knowledge!!
R&R's Mum 09-05-2008, 01:18 PM I look forward to hearing how they are doing! (If I can let them leave)
bayril 09-05-2008, 03:11 PM I look forward to hearing how they are doing! (If I can let them leave)
LOL, me too Melissa.
Morganstead 09-08-2008, 08:14 AM I LOVE it when our puppy people keep me informed about how their pups are doing, what kind of training they are getting, and of course, send pictures.
Patty/Breeder 09-08-2008, 09:48 AM It is the buyers who do not keep in touch or follow up on requests to see pics of the pup that annoy me.
They don't understand how we care about our pups or that we need to see how they are maturing in order to make decisions on future breedings.
I always keep in touch with my pup buyers and love it when they do the same. You can never ask too many questions. That tells me you care and want to learn for the benefit of your pup.
Why do you feel the way you do? Is the breeder responding to your emails and/or phone calls in a timely manner?

Well some questions have gone unanswered but generally speaking everything has been answered. I am not an uneducated dog owner but I want to play by his rules as he did breed this pup and he knows his dogs best. I just wonder if he must rolls his eyes every time my name comes up in his email inbox, especially since I just asked about changing my dog's CKC registered name. I was not given an option (although I did not ask, so it is mostly my fault) of naming her and was wondering if we could change it. Not that he named her anything outlandish, just "Breeder's Name" then Scout then my maiden name as she is registered in my name. The fact that I keep asking all these weird questions makes me wonder.
Thank you everyone for giving me your opinions, I really appreciate them!
Patty/Breeder 09-09-2008, 08:31 AM If pup is already registered in your name than you can change the name as long as she has not won any points or been shown in any AKC events.
Call the AKC and ask about this. There is a charge.
If breeder is not the registered owner of the dog you don't need their permission but it is nice to at least ask. If you don't get an answer to that question I would send an email stating that since you have not heard back you will take that as it doesn't matter to the breeder and will proceed with your name change. I would keep the breeders kennel name though, and point that out to them.
If this is not acceptable to breeder please contact you by a certain date to discuss it - otherwise you will proceed.
Worded nicely you shouldn't have any problems.

This is not how it works in Canada.

Just now realizing that the pup is registered CKC. So maybe they can not change the name. (my mistake).
However, go to the AKC web site. They have allowed name changes since 2007 as stated at the 2007 Pennsylvania Breeders Symposium.
I would have no problem if a buyer wanted to change the name of one of my pups as long as they use my kennel name. After all, it is their pet and they should be allowed to name the dog.
The only time I will name the pup is if buyer does not come up with a name in time for me to register the pups. Something I do myself (at buyers cost) after filling in the name of choice from buyer, to be sure my pups are registered with the AKC. Buyers are told to have a name ready when they pick up their pup.
VampieNJ 09-15-2008, 06:36 PM Omg...now you made me wonder how annoying the breeder finds me lol. I don't even have my puppy yet. Since March, I think I've called her almost every month. I've emailed manyyyyy times. WAIT TIL MY PUPPY GETS HOME! She might block me from emailing her lol..I hope not. lol! I just like to be informed and I like to update also. Camera charged, ready to go!
LabLady101 09-15-2008, 07:01 PM Oh, wow! I don't think you're annoying at all- not one bit. If you feel like you are annoying, I can only hope that our puppy buyers will be as annoying as you, lol!;)
We keep in touch with both of our girls' breeders. Both are very supportive. The one isn't that far away and we have often gone out to field train with him in the past as well as have gotten some wonderful training advise. He is a field breeder (although an "old timer" one, you can tell it in his dogs, they are of a different style than the dogs of today) and we thought he would freak out when we told him about Blue competing in Rally, Obedience, Conformation, etc. Not at all! In fact, I've never seen him smile bigger than when he learned of her non-field accolades, and he started to share stories of when he actually had competed in Obedience, etc. himself "back in the day"- something we never knew about him!
I have no idea if you can change your pup's registered name in Canada, but I wouldn't worry about being a bother to your breeder. That's what they're there for, for support and information.
scout's_honour 09-15-2008, 07:33 PM Nah can't change the name, the CKC told me what Breezeline already did. No biggie! :)
Thank you guys, you've all made me feel that much better. I just like updating and sharing what the pup is doing! We just love her so much and she is such a part of not only our family but our extended family, our friends, and my work as well - she is very much loved/enjoyed by everyone at my clinic. I just like to share how much she means to so many people.
Plus she's really cute :D:cool:
Breezeline 09-16-2008, 07:00 AM I think that you have touched on a really good point.
Any calls that I get for labs, (CKC directs all lab inquiries to me as the Secretary of our club) the one thing that I stress is that you need to be just as comfortable with your breeder as they are with you as you will (hopefully) be dealing with them for years to come.
If you don't think they are going to be around for after support and that is very important for you, then find another breeder.
I am not saying that you breeder is not reputable as I don't know who they are, but most reputable ones will offer lifetime support.
Something else to consider is that if they don't get back to you on minor issues in a timely manner, what happens if you truly do have an emergency and you need to reach them?
scout's_honour 09-16-2008, 08:16 AM Very true - overall I am comfortable with dealing with my breeder. Just wasn't sure I was "pushing" boundaries or anything.
