View Full Version : How do I rescue a U.S. dog?

So we would like a second lab (all you guys with your pairs and trios!!!!) and we would like it to be a rescue. I've been checking all the rescues around here (Edmonton, Alberta) but no luck - yet. But I do see dogs that I would LOVE to save in your listings...for instance, the yellow lab, Dallas, who is in Texas and scheduled to be PTS on Thurday. I would take him in a second, but they don't ship out of state, let alone to Canada.
Is there something we can do? How do transports work? And I hear about dogs being "pulled" and then transported all the time. Is something like this possible here? How does it all get arranged?
Thanks, Susan

I don't know. But DH & I are looking into adopting another lab and there are so few labs in MN to be adopted. I see so many wonderful dogs on here waiting out of state.

What you do is work through a rescue in that state. If you are intersted in the Dallas lab I would contact PATEX as she is based out of Texas. Depending on the results we can always do a transport to get you the dog to you. Its been done before.

Is there a rescue near you, they could do the home visit for the rescue that is based in Texas. Although some rescues are hesitant in adopting out to people that they can truly follow up on.

Doesn't say they will adopt to out of state, they just won't ship out of state. Have you called the shelter? If they will adopt out of stae then we can arrange a transport.

I have tranported a dog to Canada and as long as you have the proper vet records showing a rabies shot it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks! I have PMed another interested person (jupie13) who lives in Virginia (much closer) who should be contacting you. I've told her to work quickly. Hopefully this will all work out and Dallas will get his forever home.
Thanks for your advice.

I wouldn't wait, I would call the shelter and find out if they will adopt out of state.

Hi - we have a lab rescue in MB, Susan Trigg is the contact person. Her phone number is (204) 885-5454. Not sure if that's an option for you...

OK, and I have to share this...this beautiful boy is in our Humane Society here...

The thread for Dallas has been updated to show that he was adopted......good news huh. I am so happy because he was really calling out to me. I wanted to do what i could to save him.

Wow--you guys, Utah just drowns in labs. All kinds of labs are put to sleep every day here because they're so popular as hunting dogs, but not all of them are cut out for it and they get dumped. (they get dumped for all the other horrid reasons, too, but...) They day we went to look at one of our fosters at the Spanish Fork shelter they had already put down 4 that day and 16 that week! :(

Delta has a hub here and I know they fly non-stop from SLC to Calgary, as well as many other places. I would LOVE to help you find your new labbies here. I won't be able to begin regular fostering until the last half of May, but I can certainly keep a guy until transport is taken care of.

Please look at them all--tons of mixes, but tons that look purebred, too. All colors, ages, genders. The first search is a labrador search for my zip, the second is the rescue that saved Chief from animal control.

Here's just a few, and Utah Lab Rescue can't take in any doggies right now. :( Not to make anyone feel bad, but if you're lab shopping this is the place, it seems. (And KZBaxter:gossip:, Northwest flies non-stop to MSP from here)

Those are all gorgeous dogs.

We work with a shelter in St George and Lori in Fredonia, AZ (on the border) that works hand in hand with Best Friends rescue group. We have pulled several from UT.. especially over the past 4-5 months. :(

My inlaws are moving to St George in a couple months. They bought a house but need to fix and sell their current one. They already have a lab so I don't see them getting another one. Although Reese does love to play with other dogs.

If you go to Petfinder and look in Alberta their are a lot of labs in need of homes.

This guy is in Calgary

And this guy is in Brooks

This pretty girl is in Red Deer

If you really want a second lab there are many labs withing Alberta if you look at the Shelters/Rescues etc. I also see quite a few labs when I go to the local shelter which always breaks my heart.

I hope you are able to rescue one :)

Does anyone know what happened to Sanka? She was in Alberta....
"Heartbroken what to do with my dog" Trying to attach link....remember--the woman had gotten her dream job in Africa and was going to find a home for Sanka, a 3 yr old chocolate....?

fortunately, they have a fund at that shelter for injured pets.
