View Full Version : What do you feed your Lab?
Luna03 06-22-2008, 02:10 AM So many choices out there. Just wondering what you all feed yours.
I got a pure bred yellow Lab and my breeder says Eukanuba. Luna is going to be 5 yrs old. from age 1-3 I had her on Purina One. after age 3 until now I have her on Eukanuba.
Seems like she had brighter eyes with the Purina One but she seems more consistant with the Eukanuba. It is a little more expensive but thats one reason why I like it. Another is they make Labrador Specific Bags which have the nutrition a Lab needs for joints, ect..
I only feed her dry food! Since a Puppy.
Are you happy with what you give your lab?
Georgia 06-22-2008, 02:27 AM :thumb4::party:We feed our black lab Purina Pro Plan Selects and she loves it... we did try Wellness and Innova, at first she liked them then she became really picky and not wanting to eat really well... what we did to encourage her to eat the dry kibble was to mix a teaspoon full of moist canned dog food (same brand PPPS) and now she devours every meal
BRADNAILER 06-22-2008, 03:32 AM We changed shortly after we brought Cody home to Hills Science Plan (puppy large breed) His stools are fairly firm and regular, his skin was very dry and seems to be improving.
Most importantly of all it doesn't stay in the bowl long:D
Movedon 06-22-2008, 04:13 AM i feed my 10 week old black labrador Amber supercoat puppy and she also gets raw meat beef or chicken mince, When she gets older i hope she can handle kangaroo mince right now kangaroo mince gives her the runs. She also gets raw egg once a week.
kodiesmom 06-22-2008, 05:21 AM Kodie has been doing very well on the Canidae lamb+rice, & I rotate it with Honest Kitchen's Embark, which is a dehydrated raw (you reconstitute with water). He loves this stuff. And as a treat sometimes I give canned salmon or jack mackarel. They changed the formula on the Canidae so I'm looking into California Natural and Innova.
Labman 06-22-2008, 06:55 AM I feed Pro Plan chicken and rice, switching to adult chow at 4 months. My dog, plus thousands of others I have seen do fine on it. They don't just look good, but rarely score below OFA good.
I fed my dogs Eucanuba for years, but took notice when they began having intermitent bowel/digestive problems, possibly associated with the filler used.
I switched over to Science Diet years ago, and never looked back.
I even give my puppies Science Diet adult small kibble, when they turn 15 weeks, b/c I want to make every effort to avoid the excessive fast bone growth diseases (i.e. OCD, HOD, pano) associated with high protein 'puppy chow'.
They love thier food, and the stools are consistantly fine.
LuckyLuna 06-22-2008, 09:06 AM In the morning I rotate my 2 dogs between 3 different grain-free kibbles: Orijen, EVO regular, and Nature's Variety Instinct Duck and Turkey.
At dinner they get Honest Kitchen Thrive or Embark mixed with canned By Nature Organics. After years of feeding dogs only 1 brand of kibble for life, I'm hoping that exposing my current dogs to kibble, canned and dehydrated will strengthen their immune systems and cover nutritional needs that using just one formula might not do.
LabLoverNMiami 06-23-2008, 10:30 AM I had been feeding my Angel Girl Pedigree puppy. until I started researching "grocery Store " dog foods. I was horrified by what's in the common dog foods found on grocery store shelves! I did some research and choose The Blue Buffalo Line of foods. The formula I chose is Blue Life Protection Formula Large Breed Puppy Dog. The first ingredient is Deboned Chicken. No Wheat or Soy products- no fillers or meat by products. It's a good holistic food. I mix Angel's with a 1/2 can of their canned food twice a day and she absolutely loves it. The immedient difference I see is her stools- they are about 50% less! I chose this breand because of it's ingredients and availability- I can buy it at petsmart, so it's convenient. And it has fish meal and oils to help with her skin. Check out several differnt ones, my friend just put his lab girl on timberwolf organics. The web sites for each are www.bluebuff.com (http://www.bluebuff.com) and www.timberwolforganics.com (http://www.timberwolforganics.com) whatever you choose, choose something that will work for you based on ingedients-price and availability. Good Luck.
PS- the people on this board were VERY helpful in giving me advice.
bigharrythomas 06-23-2008, 11:17 AM You will gets lots of different answers to this question.
Cheyenne has been on Eagle Pack Large Holistic Large Breed (puppy and now adult)since she was 8 weeks old, and she has never had a problem.
Paws n Jaws 06-23-2008, 11:30 AM My dogs have always been fed Eukanuba. First it was the regular Euk and then we switched to the Natural Lamb and Rice formula when it came onto the market. We're on our last bag, though, after which I will be switching them to Solid Gold products.
Puck'sMom 06-23-2008, 11:32 AM Puck was on Nature's Recipe, then we went to ProPlan (which we like), but finances are low since we're both looking for a job, so we'll be dropping to some other food soon...
CanyonLabradors 06-23-2008, 11:32 AM We're on Canidae right now. The dogs look great.
Tide's Mom 06-23-2008, 11:50 AM I feed Tide Canidae ALS, Lamb and Rice formula. She does great on it!
growild 06-23-2008, 04:15 PM I just switched Harper from Purina to Canidae All Life Stages Formula. I see a HUGE difference in his poo, meaning it went from a disgusting mess to solid and easy to clean up!!! YAY! He's also got much more energy, seems more alert and just bounces all over the house when I have his bowl filled. Before he was ambivalent about dinner, he'd eat it but he wouldn't go crazy for it. He's also cut down on begging for my dinner!! I don't know if that has anything to do with his food, but it sure is nice :)
gundogpa 06-23-2008, 05:05 PM Pro plan chicken and rice.
Toby's Mom 06-23-2008, 05:18 PM Solid Gold - Barking at the Moon
SeahawkChic 06-23-2008, 10:09 PM Canidae all life stages. LOVE IT. Don't use any Nutro foods. Seem to be some pet deaths. Look at the pet food recall section. It isnt' recalled yet, but I used to use that food.
ffwifey 06-23-2008, 10:15 PM Innova ....looking to switch to California Natural when he gets older :)
Isis2007 06-23-2008, 10:27 PM We have been on Canidae ALS but currently doing a very slow switch to Calif Natural Lamb and Rice.
Stoli 06-24-2008, 03:55 PM When we brought Baxter home from the breeder she gave us Pro Plan I didn't want to use so I switched to Blue Buffalo and Baxter's coat was amazing...shiny, soft, smooth but his tummy did not like Blue Buffalo. So I switched him back to Pro Plan and he's great. No more pudding poop and stools are solid. Maybe when Baxter get's a little bit older (he's 15 weeks) I will switch his food.
Good Luck.....:thumb4:
PS. I know what you are going through
BauersMom 06-24-2008, 05:03 PM Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul...good food priced reasonably.
IamKrysie 07-31-2008, 09:24 AM Magnus, my purebred yellow lab, came home from the breeder on IAMS Large Breed Puppy.
He was on that for just a few months, before we researched food for the FIRST time and decided to switch him to Royal Canin, which, at the time, was the most expensive food a big-box pet store had to offer. The protein level was also quite a bit higher than the Iams.
Initially, I noticed a huge change in his pooping habits... He went from several piles a day down to 1-2.
After some signs of mild allergy (watery, red eyes and itchy-ness), we deicded to go with Innova EVO. He's been on that for a few months now, and he's doing quite well on it, although I have to restrict the portion size because it's so rich.
At the moment, we're having giardia problems, and there appears to be no end in sight.
Anyway, I would reccommend trying the different foods that people have suggested on this forum until you find something that works for your pup.
Tide's Mom 07-31-2008, 09:25 AM Canidae ALS, Lamb and Rice
I've fed Mya Iams Puppy dry food for large breed. She seems to love it. I had no idea what to feed her when I got her at 8 weeks, but the breeder said this is what he feeds all his dogs and had gotten her started off on it. The vet also said this is a great food, so that's just what I continued with.
I'm reading some people say that their dog's poo has gotten better after switching brands....
I'm wondering, I guess I don't really know this...what is the poo "supposed" to look like? Hard? Is is better to poo 1-2 times a day rather than 3-4?
ZenCat 07-31-2008, 09:34 AM I've recently started rotating my dogs between different foods. Right now we're feeding Solid Gold Mmillennia. They like it, but I'm not impressed with the quality of their stools.
Of all the dozens of foods I've fed, some which worked very well, some which did not work at all, I have been happiest overall with ProPlan Selects Salmon & Brown Rice for both of my dogs, and will keep it as the anchor of our food rotation.
ZenCat 07-31-2008, 09:37 AM I'm wondering, I guess I don't really know this...what is the poo "supposed" to look like? Hard? Is is better to poo 1-2 times a day rather than 3-4?
Here's a thread - with a poll and even PICTURES! - on that very subject :becky:

IamKrysie 07-31-2008, 09:47 AM Oh man, Poo.
Firm, but not hard. Too hard indicates a lack of fiber, which can be fixed with diet adjustments. For all of my praises reagrding EVO, I have found that Maggie's poops are like rocks on that food. No worry, a little canned pumpkin (not pie filling) can do the trick.
I have had enough talk about poo (and my dog's bowel habits, for that matter) for the day!
Coopspuppy 07-31-2008, 03:43 PM Addie eats the Kahoots brand Lamb and rice ALS kibble. It has no other grains, and compares to many of the better quality foods discussed here.

Wow, thanks Zen! I would have never imagine I'd get such information on my dog's poo! :)

kattzoo 07-31-2008, 05:33 PM Bailey is on Innova Senior, and Chance is switching from Blue LB Puppy to California Natural Puppy.

CHEERS to that!!
Innova Dry and Natures Variety raw frozen patties- that's our magic combo.
crznsnshine03 07-31-2008, 05:57 PM I have mine on Purina One. It seems to be the only food that they will all eat and that fills them up without having to eat a lot.
WrigleyBlue 07-31-2008, 07:39 PM Innova Large Breed Puppy and doing well (fingers crossed!). Plan to stick with this line unless we run into trouble.
Buddy's Mama 07-31-2008, 07:47 PM We feed Innova Evo Red Meat and the Evo Chicken/Turkey variety. My dogs do incredibly well on it. We also feed just a bit of the Evo canned in several varieties. Again, it's a hit!
Pandabear 07-31-2008, 07:48 PM I've done some research myself, and will be feeding Orijen LB Puppy to Oscar when I get him. I will update if it doesn't go well, but I hope it does. I love the quality of ingredients, type of ingredients, and protein content in Orijen. I also like that it is made in Canada with a lot of Canadian ingredients! Its priced the same as most other foods I was considering (all the good foods are expensive, I just gotta suck it up!) so that didn't really impact my decision.
Tux came home using IAMS puppy food, and we switched him to Innova LBP formula for a few months. Then he was diagnosed with very early HOD so switched him to Innova Adult. Maybe 6 weeks later the films indicated he was much better. But his poo was partially hard and then very loose at the end. So the vet recommended switching to California Naturals lamb & rice. He's been on that for about a month and he gulps it down and his poos are smaller than with the Innova formulas.

To OP...I feed raw and in kibbles I rotate, right now for the past few months, I've been feeding Before Grain, chicken based..All http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/kallie_gsd/Poop.gifgood here:D
xxLabLuvxx 08-01-2008, 09:46 AM I just switched Zack from Nutro Max for Seniors to Royal Canin Maxi for Labradors.
Very high in protein and low in fat. So far its working pretty well.
Also he used to engulf the Nutro like it was water. With the RC he has to take his time chewing the big pieces, so no more eating to fast or eating whole pieces and puking it back up. Yea!
LabLoverNMiami 08-01-2008, 01:02 PM Due to allergies at my vets suggestion I changed Angel to a Limited Ingredient Diet. I (with the help of ZenCat and my vet) choose Naturall Balance potato and duck. It's a quality food but for allergy suffers has few ingredients in it to avoid allergic reactions. Is working out fine. I also read (til my eyes popped out of my head) the dog food project website for info on foods. it was very helpful.
Slow Hand Luke 08-01-2008, 01:34 PM I feed Luke TOTW Pacific Stream. He loves it! He has shed a few pounds since putting him on it,good coat.
Shane23 08-01-2008, 03:07 PM I feed both my labs Canidae ALS.
Noel's Mom 08-01-2008, 05:20 PM Right now I'm in the process of switching mine from Natural Life Lamaderm to Purina Pro Plan. Before that they were on Taste of the Wild and did great. They also did good on the Lamaderm, but they went up on the price so I decided to give the Pro Plan for Sensitive skin and stomach a shot.
I never saw a huge difference on any of the premium brands we tried, so I'm going back to giving Purina a shot. Taste of the Wild was good and pretty reasonable, but I had to go so dang far to get it.
Lias_antics427 08-01-2008, 05:33 PM Lia: Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato
Socket: Pro Plan Chicken and Rice, but will be switched to NB when his food is gone & provided that it agrees with him.
I don't really want to feed 2 foods if I don't have to. ;)
BraethornSue 08-02-2008, 07:14 AM Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato for all three.
TN_LAB 08-10-2008, 05:23 PM Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul...good food priced reasonably.
ditto
uplander 08-10-2008, 05:27 PM Satch is finishing up a 93 % lean grilled hamburger....My breeder believes in good table scraps.
