My neighbor is going out of town and my son will be watching over their newly adopted golden. This actually translates to me watching over her. Anyway, they left instructions, and they only feed her once a day. I'm thinking retreivers need to get their meal on at least twice daily. Maybe I'm wrong about this. They also claim that the previous dog owner fed her once a day and they wanted to continue that practice.

Some dogs do perfectly fine with once a day feedings. I think if she is having issues eating, than maybe they should look into doing 2 smaller meals, otherwise I wouldn't worry.

My brother has Tanna's sister and a rat terrier. he feeds them only once a day - get this - they eat from the same HUGE bowl. What he does is fills the bowl and if they eat all of it he feeds them more but within a time limit. Pretty much all-u-can-eat buffet for 10 minutes. I have never understood his reasoning behind only feeding them once a day. but it works for him and his pups. I know I could never do it with Tanna or Luna.

I only feed Bella once a day. She eats at 6 o'clock everynite. In the morning i give her a small amount of water and a big biscut. She does just fine the vet says she is perfectly healthy for a 14 month old. On the weekends when i am home all day i will give her a small breakfast meal then cut down on dinner a bit.

Unless I have a puppy or sick/underweight foster dog, everyone eats once daily. I feed raw, so getting everything in one meal without huge bulk and overstuffing a stomach isn't an issue for us.

It also depends on your dog. Ours inhales his food, so one reason he eats twice a day (and with part of his meal in a kong) is to reduce the risk of bloat. If your dog eats calmly and moderately, this is much less of a concern.

I saw a special the other day that indicated military service dogs are fed once a day - in the evening as to prevent bloat, etc. as it gives time for digestion.

I would give one single raw meal a day if I had my druthers. Annie (senior girl) needs twice a day feedings so everybody gets fed twice a day. It would be hard to explain to Ry and Ty why only Annie gets to eat. :)

I give both Ry and Ty 4 ounces of ground raw with their supplements in the morning and finish the evening off with a big raw meal. It's really not much of a breakfast, but they feel that Annie isn't getting something they aren't. :D
