View Full Version : Does/has anyone used The Honest Kitchen?

Wasn't sure whether to post this here on in the Natural Diet section.

If anyone has or does use it, which formula do you feed? What do you add to it? How much do you have to feed? Is it palatable?

Most importantly... how does the dog do on it? What are the stools like?

Thank you :)

I've feed the samples and Indie loves it. I believe that only one formula needs the meat added. It's a really neat concept. The samples never changed Indie's stool, a mighty feat.

I use the Thrive with puppies occsionally - I mix it with the kibble and warm water to make mush. I have never had it cause any trouble with stools. If I give it to my adults I mix it with a bit of warm water :)

I fed my Golden Honest Kitchen Force for the last three years. She has all types of allergies and I thought one might be grain. Finny always got a dollop on his Eukanueba, too. I've been thinking about changing Abby back to a kibble and upgrading Finn so I researched forever and took the plunge about a month ago and changed them to California Natural Lamb and rice.

I didn't even get a second look from either of them. I switched over a month long period and they seem to love it. Stools are much smaller. (Honest Kitchen were huge.) It is so much easier to feed them dry food with goodies mixed in occasionally.

Oh and everyone commented that the Honest Kitchen food smelled bad after it is made up, although the dogs didn't think so. I'm saving about $150.00 a month.

Thank you guys!! I know it's VERY expensive, but I have been thinking about replacing Maxwell's morning kibble with THK. I have heard it's great for dogs with sensitive stomachs... and I figured instead of rotating kibbles, I could just use THK as a base and add different kinds of meats every morning.

But... I do not want to pay all of that money for a food that'll cause huge stools. Big stools = lots of waste, as we all know.

Just saw this thread. My two dogs were eating Honest Kitchen Thrive formula for about 8 months for their dinner meal. It's the formula with quinoa in it.

I didn't think it smelled bad at all. Sometimes I mixed a little EVO with it to up the protein% or lower the carb % - however you want to look at it.

Luna, my lab, and my senior golden both liked it and it really didn't seem to affect their stools. My older dog has lots of food sensitivities so the Thrive formula really agreed with him.

I think highly of the company and like the concept and the Thrive formula. Life got a little hectic around here (ideally should wait 10 min. to serve after mixing) so we're taking a break from it right now. We'll probably go back at some point.

I have the embark. I would never have bought it as it is so expensive but I won a gift certificate and thus bought the large box. I use it as a supplement to his kibble - just a topping. I switch off between that and the frozen raw nuggets ( he gets 3 of those for dinner with the kibble)

Funny you should post this. Elliot tried a few samples of it, and I have just placed an order for the preference. I added ground beef to his, since that is the only meat he's getting right now while we figure out his allergies.

Maxwell got a sample of it last year and was weirded out by it... I had to feed it to him with a spoon because he wasn't quite sure what to do with it.

I am going to contact the company and see if they will send me a few samples.

Our boys may have similar digestive issues, but they sure have different attitudes about food. Elliot thinks that if something has any kind of scent to it, that it MUST be for him to eat :tapfoot:; that's both a good and a bad thing.

I've been looking at the line for awhile, but didn't want to pay so much for something that he might not be able to tolerate, so I was glad when a local store started carrying it and had some samples. Hopefully you can get some to try.

Let us know how it goes, and remind Maxwell that food is good :D

My dogs LOVE HK. I only feed it a couple times a week because it is expensive. I like the Embark and have also tried the Keen and Thrive. The Embark is my favorite (smalls like soup mix) and it's the lowest in carbs. I use the Preference for Nittany and mix with boiled ground beef or ground chicken. It's a lot easier than making my own veggie mixes for homecooking.
