View Full Version : Dog Book Recommendations
Quasia Cutie 06-13-2006, 06:55 PM I want to read some dog books this summer, but I'm not sure which books to pick out. I've already read Marley and Me, which I loved. Anyone have any suggestions? I would love to read guide dog stories especially, but I'm having trouble finding something.
Ravensmom 06-16-2006, 04:02 PM How about Crazy for you or Anyone but you? Both have dogs in the story. They are fiction. Guide Dog stories rings a bell but I can't think of the book they were in. My Daughter and her class raised a guide dog this past school year--school ended 2 days ago for us. My daughter wrote an essay about her teacher and the guide dog, she and her Teacher recieved awards for it from a local paper.

What authors do you like?
My3Dogs 06-19-2006, 10:11 AM I just finished The Pawprints of History by Stanley Coren, he also wrote How to Speak Dog which I'm going to look for today. It was a fun read, talks about dogs in history, lil funny stories and some serious ones . I learned so many interesting things and it really shows how dogs have shaped our world today through thier presence in our lives.

I'm right there with ya!! Right now I am reading..."bark if you love me", its good, its the journey a single woman, the author, takes when she adopts a boxer needing deserving some love!! I like reading stories about how people come to find thier dogs, or realize something special about them, i.e. Marley.
Also, I liked "Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul" "dog is my co-pilot"

hmm.. that looks interesting. I may just have to read it. Thanks!
NoMonstersHere 06-20-2006, 11:39 PM Here is a link to a bunch of dog-related books that one of my puppy raising friends put together. Granted, most of them are guide dog or service dog stories, but... that makes them all dog books :)

There is another guide dog book, "Dear Kilroy" that is a series of letters written between a guide dog puppy and his "cousin." It's cute - written by Nora Vitz Harrison. www.dearkilroy.com
A golden book is "Bailey By My Side: Golden Lessons for life." Very cut
OK, one last one - though being a raiser for Guiding Eyes, Jamie, you probably already know about this one. "Through Otis' Eyes: Lessons From a Guide Dog Puppy." by Patricia Burlin Kennedy (who I believe also wrote Bailey by my side)
OK, that's enough guide dog related books for now! May not interest many others very much, but good for our kind ;)
Happy Tuesday!

Quasia Cutie 06-21-2006, 08:27 AM Thanks so much! That's exactly what I was looking for! Now I have a long list of books to read.
TanDunc 06-21-2006, 08:40 AM Did you read Marley and Me? It was the Labboard book club book in January. So Good!
Also, Cesar's Way by Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer is excellent!)
Quasia Cutie 06-21-2006, 08:50 AM Yes, I did read Marley and Me and I loved it! I've almost picked up Cesar's Way about three times, but I'm not sure if I really want to read it. Maybe some other time.

Sounds like you want "fun" reading with dogs as characters? If so, check our Iris Johansen ... a book of hers from a few years ago ... she has a golden that is a SAR dog ... it's a mystery type book and good.
Also, Fern Michaels books ... most of hers contain dogs as she has 7 of her own.
Mom2labs 06-22-2006, 09:54 AM Remember to breathe: inside dog obedience competition by Willard Bailey was almost as good as Marley & me. It's a true story about how Willard and Honeybear got started in obedience competition.
