View Full Version : is this dog mostly lab?
anneh 10-09-2006, 07:46 PM Hi, I would like your opinion here on this dog that I am thinking of adopting. He is very sweet and supposedly part Lab. Does he look like part lab? My husband is concerned about a mixed breed having possible pit bull in it also. This one is a very sweet natured, submissive personality 9mo old, he does have a tail that curls over his back abit sometimes.17843
thanks for your help:o:

d2roberts 10-09-2006, 07:47 PM It's really hard to say. (Though, yes, looks like a lab mix.) And you have to understand, many mixes have both lab and pit in them. Shouldn't make an ounze of difference. Base your decision on fit to you and your lifestyle.
Flightline 10-09-2006, 07:51 PM I agree.. looks very much like Lab mix to me too.. and Pits make great dogs like any other.. "No bad dogs, Only bad owners!":D
anneh 10-09-2006, 08:09 PM thank you all for your responses. His ears do stand up sometimes like GSD. He belongs to family member who rescued him from a shelter but really cannot afford to keep him. As I mentioned, he is very sweet natured, submissive with other dogs and no food or object aggression and currently staying with us on trial basis. I guess I got abit overly concerned when a friend said today that perhaps he had pit in him, I guess my husband's concern was that we wouldn't know if any inherited pit in him was from fighting stock:eek:. Btw his paw pads are black, his mouth(lips) are black and he has black eyeliner markings around eyes. I had labs years ago but vague memories of them.

MISS LISA 10-09-2006, 08:15 PM I don't know if I see pit, but he is definitely a mix.. the ears, the tail.. the coloring.. but he is a cutie!
Good luck! :)
Susan 10-09-2006, 08:49 PM Many breeds have the black eyeliner, etc. as you describe. The tail looks like it is fluffy or a full medium. It also looks like the tail curls up? Ears are a semi-erect. When relaxed, they don't look like they would hang long like they do on many labs. Long, pointed nose.
Personally, I see no pit and I'm not positive I see lab or not predominant in the face. Maybe part of the herding group, (e.g., shepherd or one of the flat/short haired collies)??
Looks 100% cute and sounds like he is a good personality match for you!

PATEX 10-10-2006, 07:23 AM I was thinking the same thing as Susan -- something in the herding group. I don't see pit, that's for sure, but I don't really see lab, either. With the ears like that and the longer muzzle, I immediately thought or something more like a herding dog. Shelters call anything that they can't identify a "lab mix." If he's a sweet dog, go for it, no matter what he is!
Matsuro 10-10-2006, 10:29 AM I dont think people are scared of the breed (pits) but because they cant have them in condos or apartments. So they have to make sure the dogs they want to adopt aren't part pit or staffy. Since apartments and condos wont accept them and that most insurance companies wont either except I think State Farm?? Does accpet any dog. They go on a case by case basis, they dont judge the whole breed but the dog itself and the owner of the dog; instead of shunning the rottweilers, german shepherds, or pits and staffies.
Faith's mommy 10-10-2006, 10:35 AM i would base your decision on how he is in your home rather than worrying about his mix.
there are aggressive labs too....

Great point. Any dog can be aggressive and not knowing how he was treated originally can make a difference too. Do you like the dog?? If so, then don't worry about what he is. If you want my opinion, I think he is a shepard mix.
I think he *may* have lab in him...but he looks more like a Jindo mix more than anything.

or maybe a Mountain Cur mix?
azawinsky 10-10-2006, 12:52 PM I think if he is sweet and you love him then what does it matter.
I think he has more Shepard than lab and pit in him, if he even has pit.
stevem 10-10-2006, 12:58 PM He looks a bit like our Georgia, whom we rescued in April and who is now 8.5 months old. Georgia's tail curls over somewhat too, though it's not apparent in this picture. She is a lab mixed with either a hound or GSD. Her siblings were up for adoption, too, and they were both black pups who looked remarkably like black labs.
She, too, is very submissive, almost skittish....though the longer she's with us, the more confident she gets...and she's very gentle...

Let's try this again. This is a Jindo.
anneh 10-11-2006, 11:09 AM thanks everyone I really appreciate your input. He is a sweetie and we will no longer worry about his heritage :) Yes he does have coloring and tail of a Jindo and he also looks very much like Georgia :)
