View Full Version : Dogs trying to eat leaves and twigs and maybe poop
Dragons R Real 11-21-2005, 12:45 PM Is this a sign that he is missing something in his diet, or is just doing regular dog things? He eats Diamond Lamb & rice LB Puppy food. Is anyone else feeding this brand? If so how much. The vet said 2-3 cups daily, but that is waaaay more that the bag recommends.
susiegirl 11-21-2005, 12:48 PM that does seem like a lot.......my pup is 4 & 1/2 months old eating a cup and a half a day...........but how old is your dog?? and how big??? maybe hes bigger and older then mine.............Susie eats leaves and twigs to.........i just throw her ball at her and tell her to knock it off............
Dragons R Real 11-21-2005, 12:55 PM Our Siris is about 7 weeks old. He is just a little guy. We have been feeding him 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 cup a day, but were wondering if this was not enough because he tries to eat stuff outside too. He also gets treats while training. So far, he can sit on command. Good boy!
Solid ImageLabs 11-21-2005, 01:03 PM In my experience, dogs will eat anything that will fit in the hole, so be careful there. They will eats nails, small plastic toys, x-mas ornaments, you name it.
One of my pup buyers had a pup grab his kid's corn dog, and swallow it, stick and all, cost him about $2,000. to get it out.
Louie Legend 11-21-2005, 01:05 PM We feed Diamond Lamb and Rice LB Puppy. Louie's done great on it since he was 7 weeks old. We only fed 1 1/2 cups for the first few weeks in 3 meals. We pretty much followed the bag, usually leaning toward the lower end. He's now 48lbs at 5 months and gets right around 4 cups which works for him as his weight is great and he's an active dog.
Per stuff outside, that's just being a puppy I think. Louie loves to chew on sticks or whatever else he can get in his mouth, but sticks, leaves, and mulch are his favorite. I definitely had some nice scratches from getting them out his mouth. I bet it doesn't have anything to do with him being hungry, but it is more of his explorative puppy nature and they explore with their mouths sometimes. As for poop, Louie never tried to eat it. Rather, he usually tries to avoid it. Doesn't like to play where he poops. So no help there.
Charlie'sDad 11-21-2005, 01:27 PM Teaching the drop command has come in useful for us in these situations. We don't generally have a problem with Charlie gnawing on a stick, but if she picks up something we don't approve of, we can give the drop command and she'll drop whatever it is she has.

Dragons R Real 11-21-2005, 02:02 PM He does not eat the poop....yet. He just seems interested in it. He sniffs it and kinda stalks it and pounces next to it. That is why I said maybe eats poop. We are going to start on the drop it command today. He has got the sit command down! He loves to try and eat leaves and stuff. Good to know that is normal. Thanks! :)
Louie Legend 11-21-2005, 02:08 PM Yeah, Louie will point at the poop, but that's about it. Drop is definitely a great command. We've worked on it with Louie for a while and he is great with dropping toys. Still working on drop for things he shouldn't have and knows he shouldn't have. He's getting better, but still not perfect. Just be patient as I think drop will probably take longer than sit. At least it did for us. At 7 weeks I think the biggest things to work on are name, come, and sit. Everything else is gravy.

You are right. He does not know his name yet. If you just call his name, he completely ignores me. He does "sit" with no problem. When he is hungry he even goes and just sits by his dish looking at us.
We are working on come, but he is really hung up on sit. When he sees his training treats he automatically sits and wont bugde until he gets his treat. Any advice? Still working on it....
Louie Legend 11-22-2005, 08:22 AM If he has sit down, you can easily start working on lay down. Have him sit and just put the treat by his nose in a closed hand and bring it diagonal down and away from him to the floor. Hopefully he'll follow the treat to the floor. We also did shake early on. I know some people do not like it because it could lead to "pawing" for a treat. It usually only takes a few days of work to get these. My personal favorite command is stay. We didn't start that until he was closer to 10 weeks old as he was still mastering the others, but it is great for so many situations.
Anyway, I think that if you teach him some more commands he won't automatically sit for a treat. By the way, Louie still does not come everytime called and he's 5 mos old. It also took a little while for name recognition. But it all comes in time. Sounds like you are off to an awesome start.
