Just came across this site and thought I would pass along. Of course I had to look at the In Memorium section. But it is a good site and they are trying to get more shelters on the list.

There was a brief discussion regarding this site. And I agree with you..with certain conditions attached. ;)

I was thinking more along the lines you mentioned rather then something the general public would use. But I can see where the general public would pull without thinking things through. Either way a database of this information would be highly valuable if it was properly utilized. Gosh, can you think how more efficient things would run (for us) if we had a national database that we could access and network with rescues. We could then maybe have a better plan in place for and everything may not always be so last minute. It seems like so many of these rescues are "hunt and peck" (ie. just happening to come across that Lab that only has a LIMITED time ONLY b/c someone happend to call to enquire about the dog. And lets not forget the dog that is listed as URGENT but we don't know if URGENT means today, tomorrow, 5 days and then we call or email to enquire about the dog only to get no one on the phone, no msgs/emails returned). Money may also be saved and more utilized in better ways (ie. having to pay a transport company last minute when we could have setup a network transport had we had the time and a better game plan). I guess it is a relatively new site and concept and may still need to find its exact niche and real purpose but I feel in the future it will be an invaluable tool. I mean look at a good number of the shelters that are building nicer facilities (i know not all). These new buildings are now more functional then ever taking a lot of stress off the people that run it (again I realize this is not always the case). With things running more efficiently at these facilities staff may be able to take advantage of such a tool as this. Stepping down from my soapbox now.

No I couldnt agree with you more. That was my point. It feels like we are headless chickens running around yelling "SAVE THIS ONE, SAVE THAT ONE...Um who has the info"?

Its time rescue starts consolidating their efforts and find and using *better* tools than it currently is.
This...is a *GREAT* tool! But for now if and when we push it on the shelters, (mostly those worried that "bleeding hearts" will make a rash decision only to return it later), we must also emphasize that they need to take responsibility to whom they adopt to and add a disclaimer to their posts that they will only adopt these particular dogs to rescue groups or pre approved people.

That why they have greater control and help us to help people looking for a new pet!

Actually I was amazed to find some of the dogs I enquired about that were in the In Memorium section were adopted. I believe they are listed to be euthed but then the shelter does not update to say its been adopted and computer lists the dogs as PTS. Good to know.

Yeah. DID throws it on the shelters for not listing them as adopted and thats really the least of the shelters priorities. It would be nice if instead of assuming the dog was PTS, they had a section where it was like: " This dog is no longer being posted on DID. This could be due to many reasons including euthanasia or adoption. Please contact the shelter for further details". (Again assuming it was used as a rescue tool).

DID is a great concept and its in its infancy still. I think its got a lot of kinks to work out. At the moment I get too much of a "Man the torpedoes" feel from them. Like come high or hell water, they are going to push forward. I dunno. Good tool, needs tweaking.
