I have a very large 4 month old lab puppy. 40 pounds. He doesn't look fat and you can feel his ribs, he's just a big pup, I guess. Is that normal? I have never had a dog before.
Also, Until last week, I was feeding him purina puppy chow (the regular one) because that was what the breeder had him on when I got him at 7 weeks. But through research, I have decided to give him Innova puppy food for large breeds. He loves it but he still seems hungry after giving him the recommended amount. The AKC site said labs are between 50-80 pounds, he's already 40 at 4 months old...how big will he end up???!!

you can do a search and read all that we do. if you're not too confused after that, you will be able to make a decision.
i also think most labs are hungry most of the time.
it's just the way they are.

hi jake,
My pup is 4months and is also 40 pounds. My pup's brother is 4mths @ 49 pounds. It all depends on the dog and his parents I guess. His mother is 75 pounds and his dad is 95 pounds!
I feed Innova Lbp food. I think my puppy would eat all day if I let him. Labs are known for their appetite, so I think it's normal that he would still 'seem' hungry after he eats (as long as your not under feeding) just my opinion..however I feed a little more than what is recommended on the bag because we have increased his excercise (wallking more frequently). Typically, I just watch my pup and decrease or increase food as necessary. :)

How big were the parents? That's not always a give a way though, my dogs dad was 110 and ms was 80, my two girls are around 55#s at 18 months.

He was born on Feb. 14 That's why his middle name is Valentino! haha Jake is his first name--I just liked it. AND I never knew a man named Jake...so it keeps my dog from reminding me of someone every time I say his name. haha~! As soon as I figure out how to post a picture...I'll be showing him off!

These were taken 3weeks ago...a lifetime in puppy! but I still haven't got the new ones uploaded yet...I just got a new computer and it's got vista on it...and I'm a little lost. If things work, I feel like I got lucky. Jake looks more like your pics than he does his own, now, haha.

Oh Jake is a big boy...and very handsome too! I agree...Labs are always hungry. They sure can make you feel bad like you are not feeding them enough. The first few days we had Addie, she slunk around the kitchen hoping for more. We stuck to the bag regulations and now she is fine. She eats three cups a day but I do need to weigh her to see how much she has grown. Last time we weighed she was 23 pounds. I do applaud you switching to a higher quality food. From all that I have read and learned on here, it is well worth it. I am sure you have browsed this site like I have!

he IS huge...he weighs 40 pounds and is only 16 weeks...he's great! I can't believe how much I love this puppy...I spend all my waking time with him, and all the time HE is asleep...doing stuff like this...or talking about him! I swear he is consuming my life...but I'm loving it! All the pics everyone has posted are so cool! I love looking at Labs at different ages and see who looks like Jake, etc. Thanks!

Innova bag says feed 5 3/4 c for a 40 pound pup. which seems like a lot to me...but not to jake! LOL

Jake got his final puppy shots and his rabies shot today...yippie! Soon he'll be able to explore the world...
Note: His vet has never heard of Innova dog food!!??? Made me wonder if I'm taking him to the right vet??
But he sure was able to quickly produce a bag of science diet...are they getting paid to sell that or what?

Not all vets are familiar with all foods. I think it's a great sign if you bring your food in and/or discuss it's merits with your vet and they're happy to learn more; however I wouldn't immediately discount them for not knowing all of the foods by brand name.

I'd definitely have a serious conversation with mine if they tried to switch my healthy dog from a food like Innova to a food like Science Diet, though. Definitely a downgrade.
