View Full Version : Feeding 2 dogs?
bill9009 06-30-2006, 06:33 PM Well I just got a new dog, she is 1.5 years old and I already have a puppy who is a little over 4 months so obviously they require different amounts of food. Oddly enough buddy the puppy weighs 46lbs and lucky the 1.5 year old weighs 56 lbs, but buddy is still growing so he requires alot more food, ok heres the ?, is there a good way to feed them without them eating each others food besides putting one in the crate while the other eats? They are both slow eaters so its kinda a pain to do it that way, but if its the only way to do it then thats what i will do, i am just wondering how other people with multiple dogs do it!
DarwinsMom 06-30-2006, 06:46 PM Feed a couple feet apart and supervise. If someone tries to go to the other dish, correct by leading them back to their own.

This is what I do, too. DH feeds them in separate rooms.
3lablady 06-30-2006, 08:23 PM Mine know which bowl is theirs and don't go to the other one until they are all done eating and then they lick each others bowls. We've been lucky never to have had any problems at feeding time. If I accidentaly put the wrong bowl in front of the wrong dog I get a look from them and they hestitate to eat from it.

Hehe that's cute! :)
d2roberts 06-30-2006, 08:27 PM Mine have their own bowls, and their own sides. At first we seperated them a bit, now they eat within inches. Calvin is a slow eater, and Chester just swallows whole - but he's learned to never touch Calvin's bowl. He'll just sit there and drool until Calvin is done.
Chester is so funny - he ALWAYS has to be to the right of Calvin in everything we do. Walking, eating, etc...
zoezoe 06-30-2006, 08:30 PM Hopefully, each will learn their spot once you have them together for a while. I feed 6 at a time, and they each know where their " spot " is. When my husband feeds them, they get confused and start bumping into each other because they get off kilter! lol
Mom2labs 06-30-2006, 08:34 PM Fischer licks Finns bowl, too. They take about the same time to eat since we switched to raw. It used to take Finn forever to eat!
Luc-Luca-Lucas 07-01-2006, 06:14 AM Feed a couple feet apart and supervise. If someone tries to go to the other dish, correct by leading them back to their own.
I do that too. I always feed Luc on the left and Roxy on the right. Luc used to want to take her food but after correcting him enough he just gets upset if she has food in her bowl she hasn't eaten and barks at it...
labby 07-01-2006, 08:25 AM I have 8 Labs and they all eat in the same general area. When we add a new puppy, it will go for various food dishes the first time, but I just pull it away and show them their own dish. The puppies eat last so that confuses them sometimes when I put down the other dogs' dishes.
All the dogs are standing in the area where they eat and they stay there until their dish is put down. I stand there with them while they eat to make sure the vultures don't steal from someone else (like the 16 year old).
Timberlabs 07-01-2006, 08:26 AM I have 5 to feed...so the chis eat in their crates so I know that they got to eat..( sugar issues with chis) and Ruger at 8 mths old eats in his crate because he's a hog...lol...Bear and Fraiser eat side by side and sometimes the cat joins Bear. LOL
When Ruger is older he will eat out with the other ones but beacuse he's a pup I want to monitor his food intake.
doglvr 07-01-2006, 08:26 AM My boys eat at the same time right next to each other. Neither one has ever had any food aggression issues so it has never been a problem. Odie is a fast eater, while Lucky is very delicate and takes his time. I usually stay in the same room while they are eating because Lucky is not a ravenous eater like his brother and sometimes will become distracted mid-meal and walk away. Once he walks away, Odie figures his food has been abandoned and is free game. :D But if Lucky is eating, Odie will wait until Lucky is finished, Lucky will then lick Odie's empty bowl, and walk away, then Odie goes and licks Lucky's empty bowl hoping his brother left a crumb:rolleyes: . It is their normal meal routine. We had never thought about separating them, but if it ever became a problem I am sure we would.
bill9009 07-01-2006, 04:08 PM cool thanks for the advice, i guess i will just try and get them used to their own bowls
CanyonLabradors 07-01-2006, 09:59 PM Mine know which bowl is theirs and don't go to the other one until they are all done eating and then they lick each others bowls. That's the same in our house. When Grace was a pup, she needed to be supervised during meals as she would push Hudler out of the way and get in his bowl. Maddy will growl if Grace gets too close, but after a few months, they respect each others bowls...
On rare occaisons when one doesn't eat, we let one of the others finish it, and we have to tell them OK like 3 times before they realize it's OK to eat from someone else's bowl.
bill9009 07-02-2006, 07:30 PM well i have started putting their bowls on opposite sides of the water cooler thing and that seems to work, they are getting used to eating out of their own bowls now
melegray 07-06-2006, 08:25 AM I have a 6 month old pup and and a 10 year old aussie who is on a specialized diet. I end up sitting on the couch by my older aussie to make sure the little one won't get in her food. When he gets close he gets a swat on the nose with a "No." He ends up laying near the bowl, waiting for when it is all empty to lick it.
I've been doing that for about a month or so now. Blue is just about at the point were I could leave the room and he won't try to get into Syd's bowl...I just haven't tried that yet!
ZenCat 07-06-2006, 08:49 AM I feed mine at opposite ends of the kitchen. Grip eats really fast, and Drum eats really slow, so I supervise. Drum gets annoyed and stops eating if Grip stares at him while he eats so I often have to tell Grip to stop staring.
Its going to be interesting to have to triangulate when we get the puppy!
BaxtersMama 07-11-2006, 09:30 AM I know what you are going through!! I have a 19 lb that is supposed to eat senior and a 6 month old puppy. I guess it's a universal thing to want what the other has. My senior dog was always eating the puppy and my puppy eating his food and the senior, the pig!! My vet became concerned with the senior dog eating the puppy food, b/c of the high fat content. My vet said to either switch them both to a food that both puppies and seniors could eat (I guess they make such a thing, but I didn't want to feed purina since they've always been on nutro) or to feed them in separate rooms.
I started feeding my senior dog when I could manipulate my puppy to go outside. Luckily from a feeding standpoint, I've started feeding the senior Hills h/d. He gobbles that up and I just remove Baxter from the room.
It is a challenge. Good luck to you.

The same thing at our house!!! LOL
