SHE IS DOING FINE ON IT BUT SEEMS TO WANT MORE THAN THE RECOMENDED DAILY FEEDING! ANY IDEAS OR IS THEIR A BETTER FOOD FOR HER? SHE IS NINE WEEKS OLD?? Averysmom 05-04-2004, 05:22 AM If you do a search about food, you'll find a lot of info. And if you look in the nutrition section, there's lots there too. Good luck! fishermen3521 05-04-2004, 06:02 AM :( Have read alot in nutrition section, she just seems like a bottomless pit!talked to a fellow who has a male lab puppy and he swears Iams is the best! Well thank you for advece will go back to the nutrition sectio and reread, maybe trying to get to much info at once!!lol lol !!! TY SUE AND ROSIE Averysmom 05-04-2004, 06:11 AM I just reread your original post, she should be on puppy food. As far as I'm concerned, Purina is not a very good food, and I tried Avery on Iams and he lost weight. Iams is very over rated. I tried my cats on it as well and they didn't do well either, one of my cats started barfing more than ever. I'm now in the process of switching my dogs over to Kirkland lamb and rice after reading alot of the food related posts here on the board. But mine are adults, Rosie needs puppy food at nine weeks of age. Just my opinion though. Edpall3 05-04-2004, 06:25 AM I agree. Puppy food is the way to go until she is at least a year. Some vets recommend puppy food up to 18 months. My dog is finiky. We tried Bil-Jack and she loved it. We then tried Eukanuba and she doesn't want to eat. I guess I should have stayed with the Bil-Jack puppy food. fishermen3521 05-04-2004, 06:55 AM  Well I have a 20lb bag of the purina 1 so I guess I will start investigating the different puppy foods a little further! TY for your help!Another problem is getting her to go outside, I have wee wee pads inside, she uses them sometimes other times she gose wherever, we take out after she eats and she will go but still gose in house!! also do you leave water for them at all times or just at feedings?? need your help! TY SUE & ROSIE fishermen3521 05-04-2004, 06:57 AM :( We do take out several time through the day also we take her to the rod and gun club we belong too! she loves the water and everthing else!! TY SUE & ROSIE Averysmom 05-04-2004, 07:06 AM I always took my puppies out every hour and when they do what they're supposed to do outside they get the wildest praise you have ever seen!! When Avery was peeing, as a puppy, I would say over and over again "make a pee, make a pee, make a pee....." constantly until he was finished then I would praise him like crazy. The same when he was pooping only I would say "poop Avery, poop, poop, poop, good boy, poop, Avery....". So now when we go outside and I say "make a pee or poop Avery" off he goes to do his business, no fooling around. He knows that when we go outside, he does his business and then if we have time, we'll play. I think that if Rosie is peeing in the house then you're not taking her out enough. Averysmom 05-04-2004, 07:09 AM If you go to the top of the page and click on the search button and do a search "puppy food" lots of threads come up. fishermen3521 05-04-2004, 07:11 AM  Well your probably right and I will have much more time after this week as I will be only working two evenings a week!!Ben dose take her out when he's home1 bUT BEING NEW FUR BABY PARENTS WE STILL HAVE ALOT TO LEARN!!! ty SO MUCH FOR REPLY! Do you leave water out at all times???? Averysmom 05-04-2004, 07:15 AM I've always left water out all the time, the only time you should take it up is if Rosie is having a hard time at night. I used to set the alarm to get up at 2am to take Avery out. I had to wake him up for a little while then I stopped that and he never whined to go out so he slept all night. If she's waking you up a lot in the night to go out then you should take her water up, I'm not sure exactly when though. If you need to know when, let me know and I'll see if I can find out. Edpall3 05-04-2004, 07:30 AM one thing that my sister recommended and it seems to work is this. When Rosie pees in the wrong place clean up the spot and put a little vineger on the spot where she peed. It will not hurt the rug and it will discourage her. I took shadow out and every time she went out I would tell her go pee pee. When she went pee I would tell her good girl pee pee and give her a treat. it didn't take long and she will now go out and as soon as I tell her go pee pee she squats and does it. Then she gets a treat. fishermen3521 05-04-2004, 07:39 PM :help: Vinegar , well its worth a try!! TY!I am happy to say that Rosie will no longer be left alone for long periods and I will have the time to spend with her that she deserves! So I will be doing alot of reading here and Rosie and I will get trained together!! LOL LOL Thank You, Sue & Rosie(arf arf):) Edpall3 05-04-2004, 09:08 PM you are welcome sue. I know that Rosie will be very happy. Shadow is still getting into everything. The more we put up the more she finds. Oh well..... she is worth every aggrivation. Arf arf Edpall3 05-04-2004, 09:09 PM Here is a picture of Shadow. You can understand why I can't stay mad for long. fishermen3521 05-06-2004, 10:59 AM Ben says the same thing when Rosie looks at him after she knows she did something wrong, "Don't look at me with those eyes." You can't help but love them no matter what they do!!! I've been taking Rosie out more often now that I'm home and yes she has only had a couple of mistakes!! She sits on command! But the newest problem is leash walkin! She always keeps turning around to go home!!!! Any suggestions??? Sue & Rosie:angel: Averysmom 05-07-2004, 06:27 AM I don't know what to tell you about that only that Rosie's still very young and probably doesn't want to leave what she knows. Don't worry, I don't think you'll have a problem when she gets a little older. I would still take her for her walks though, going farther after she gets used to going so far and keep doing that. fishermen3521 05-07-2004, 06:58 AM I am so thankful for this sight! I know labies are good dogs but being able to access this sights helps us understand Rosie so much more! Thank you all !! Rosies Mom, Sue:angel: PuppyLove 05-07-2004, 08:16 AM I just wanted to add that Iams (which also makes Eukanuba) is currently targeted by PETA for abuse of lab animals. If you're looking to switch your puppy's food look around as there are some very good alternatives to Iams (many better, in my opinion) that haven't been busted for cruelty. As far as commercial dog food goes I like Wellness (http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com) but I see from a search here that some people's dogs found it too rich and had some poop issues. Loki gets it as treats, and I'm weaning him off his raw diet onto Wellness, and he makes splendid poops (and looks so proud when I tell him as much). It's quite expensive ($60 CDN for 30 lbs) but you feed less (~2 cups/day for a 30 lb puppy, vs 3-4 cups/day of Nutro Ultra which is $40 CDN for 35 lb bag) so cost per feeding is about the same. Definately search the Health and Nutrition section, I found it incredibly helpful when trying to figure out the whole puppy food issue. |
