When we got Rocky at 6weeks, the lady(who got him at a breeder) had him on Ol'Roy. Bad, runny stool. Switched that real quick. We still gave a bit of the Ol'Roy as to not overwhelm him with change. Got him on Nutrience Puppy. Then read the book and took their advice, he now gets a bit of the puppy stuff and bit of the adult (Eukanuba). He seems to love it.

He will be 9 weeks on Friday. I was wondering if some of you could provide me with what a typical day in food wise would be. I have a read alot on this site, with eggs, sardines...

Any suggestions would be great!!!:)

Why are you feeding Rocky both foods and of different brands, and for different ages of dogs?

As long as you have a good large breed puppy food, with the first 3 ingredients being an animal meat source (not animal by-products/digest) then for now, that should be enough for your puppy. Always read the ingredient labels of dog foods before trying your dog on it. I personally don't like dog foods that have both lamb and chicken in them. If your dog turns out to be allergic to one or the other, you'll have a hard time determining which one it is, and they can also become allergic to both since both are in the same food. The list of vitamins should NOT be near the bottom of the ingredient list, but somewhere in the middle and top of the list.

Also, you first want to get his intestinal tract in order before adding supplements, ie. eggs, veggies, etc. If you don't, you won't know which supplements may or may not be causing any potential problems. Once everything has settled down, then you can one by one add a supplement. Give each supplement a few weeks to settle into his system before adding another one.

For easier digestion, and to prevent bloat (Labs are deep barrel chest dogs and are prone to bloat), you can wet his food with a little water and let soak for approx. 5 to 7 minutes before serving. How often are you feeding Rocky per day, and how much per feeding?

I'm getting 2 different threads mixed up, sorry forgot to add this link to the above post...

Here is a link that might help you choose a puppy food that is right for Rocky:

i had talked to my vet about putting him on the adult food (what the book said) and she said she couldn't see a problem with it, but to do the switch over slowly. So to give him part of the puppy large breed and part adult. The reason they are two different brands is because we bought the puppy stuff before talking to the vet, now realize there is a better food out there for him. which is why we are in the process of switching. we only want the best for him.

i am feeding him a little less than a handful(small hands) each feeding. Morning noon and supper (vet recommended) which equals to about 3/4 cup a day.

is that suitable??? like i said, we are only trying to do good buy him. your help is greatly appreciated.

I have a 9 week old lab puppy too. When I got him home at 7 1/2 weeks, we fed him what the breeder recommended as that was what he was used to (Science Diet Puppy Large Breed). But, we are in the process of changing from that to Pro Plan Puppy Large breed based upon recommendation from our vet.

Puppies need puppy food. At least for the first 6 months if not a year.

I currently feed my puppy 1/2 cup of puppy food three times a day. He gained 2 1/2 lbs the first week. lol He now weighs 11 lbs. He should get to 80 lbs as an adult.

I'm feeding Quincy (9 1/2 weeks) 3 cups/day of his Large Breed puppy food. He still noses around his bowl like he's starving and when he does that I give him an ice cube or a treat inside his Kong which entertains him for a while. He turns his nose up at carrots but LOVES bananas and the Kong peanut butter treats. I'm also going to start 1 can of sardines a week.

Rockysmom, You're a good mom who loves her puppy! I think its great that you care enough to research the issue.

I have my guy on a large breed puppy food, and he'll go off when this bag runs out. He'll be 5 months old in a couple of weeks and he's already 46 lbs!! I'm going to put him on adult food to slow his growth now. His breeder recommends that for her dogs.

Until Baxter was 10-12 weeks, he only got about one and a half cups a day. He didn't need that much food, and believe me, he grew a lot. Now he has closer to 3 cups a day.

Brandiemz, that seems like an awful lot of food for such a little guy. Is that what your breeder/vet recommended?

Yes - recommended by the Vet as he's not such a little guy - he's over 20 lbs. and loves to run around. The majority of his training treats I take from his daily food ration and both of his parents are off the charts as very large dogs.

i actually sent a pm to txgolfer about how much his dog has to eat. we put about 1/2 in his bowl, three times a day, and he doesn't eat it all. i am starting to think he may be allergic to the chicken in it (from other threads) and doesn't like it... not sure. But i have started giving him ice cubes, and we haven't quite mastered the kong...

is there a way i can get him to eat?

txgolfer suggested leaving his food down for about 5 minutes... but when do i give it back to him?

he will eat the food out of my hand though, i tried that yesterday, maybehe doesn't like the bowl.. both food and water bowls are plastic, he drinks out the water bowl just fine. I'm stumped

thanks wonderbred for the words of encouragement. :D

Rocky'sMom,

Leave it down for 5 minutes, whatever is left after 5 minutes gets picked up. No more food til next feeding interval.

Hope that helps.

thanks txgolfer, i just needed clarification. :)

so i did that at dinner tonight.. picked it up after 5 minutes. we went for a car ride to my parents, i used his dog food as treats (i.e. sitting nice in the car, no whinning) and he was eating.

we got to my parents and he got away from me (in the house) and ate her dogs food.

what's up with that? :)
