View Full Version : Feeding your dog canned Salmon
Lovemylabby 04-28-2005, 12:16 PM I have noticed that some of the members here are feeding their dogs canned Salmon once in a while...I am assuming it is very good for skin and coat...but doesn't Salmon also contain mercury which may not be a good thing for dogs? Please correct me if I am wrong...Thank you!
happyhomer 04-28-2005, 12:21 PM all ocean fish contains some mercury. wild pacific salmon is one of the fish that contains a lesser amount of mercury, also sardines and jack mackerel... but not king mackerel. atlantic slamon has a higher concentration of mercury. as a lot of dogfoods contain fish meal, they all probably have some contamination from mercury. i give my dogs fish that i consider safe to eat myself.
happyhomer 04-28-2005, 12:23 PM here is a fish list, i keep something like this in my wallet so that i dont accidentally buy a fish that is high in mercury or a fish that is in danger of being overfished.

Autumn 04-28-2005, 04:45 PM We are planning to feed our lab Salmon as well.
Chewdog 04-28-2005, 05:17 PM Luca Bella gets a can of salmon every other day for her evening meal.
I buy canned, wild caught alaskan salmon.
I've also heard that mercury contamination happens over time, as the fish accumulates mercury that its body can't get rid of. Over time the level of mercury builds, therefore older, larger fish have higher levels of mercury. I've heard that larger fish are more like to be sold as fillets or what have you from a fish market, or meat counter. While the canned products tend to consist of the younger, smaller fish.

Lovemylabby 04-29-2005, 09:10 AM Sounds like many members feed their dogs salmon with good results...I can imagine how much my Toby would LOVE it! Thanks for all your input.
Chewdog 04-29-2005, 12:41 PM In my opinion, salmon is excellent for dogs. Its high in protein (animal protein, the best kind) it is extremely high in Omega fatty acids (between 1000 and 1500mg per serving usually) and fish tends to have an anti-inflammatory effect, so could help alleviate pain from bone/joint issues. And if you leave the bones in, a good source of calcium.
And they absolutely go batty over the taste/smell.
Luca Bella loves her salmon, she usually spins in a circle in anticipation as I open the can. :package:
Lovemylabby 05-01-2005, 11:32 AM Ha-ha... My labby does the same thing when he is about to eat...spins in a circle... :3dance: I call it.."dancing for me"...just too funny...Labs are the best!
JenQuinn 05-01-2005, 07:01 PM I was looking at canned salmon and jack mackerel in the market today. Do you have to worry about the salt? Should you rinse it off- or can they have it right out of the can?
Black Labbies 05-01-2005, 11:48 PM Jenn, try to buy the mackerel without salt and in vegetable oil. If you can, buy salt-free organic salmon.

Avoid vegetable oil, or look for it? The cans I looked at had macherel, salt and water for ingredients.

my canned fish is the same, i buy the ones that say "in water" and give the fishies a good rinse in a colander before feeding them to wash off some of the salt. i figure some of the salt stays in the fish, so i dont feed canned fish more than once or twice a week. i have found canned salmon without salt, though.
Lovemylabby 05-02-2005, 01:30 PM I bought some salmon today for Toby..can't wait to give it to him! :)
