View Full Version : Fertility Dance Please

Patty/Breeder

I have waited so long for this......... over 2 years.

Some of you may not remember my ordeal back in January where Miya was to be bred, only to find out her liver levels were off the charts.

She is doing fine now but has been retired from my breeding program. I just won't take the chance on breeding her. Her long, healthy life with me is more important than her producing babies.

However, her beautiful daughter, Jazz, has been bred tonight (2 more breedings to follow) for a black and choc. litter.

So I am asking you all to do the "fertility dance" for my sweet girl that she takes (due date would be 11/18/08 (O/A))

She has been bred to a very handsome choc. boy. Go to my web site and click on puppy page, scroll down and you will see the link to his page.

www.snowcolabradors.com

Thank you all for your "dance" and prayers. I need the joy of babies in my life right now. Praying for a black girl for my keeper.

So I guess I need to also ask you to do the "girly dance" as well.

I have no doubt as this board always comes thru.

OMG, you bred to Roger?!? I'll bet Abby is thrilled to see more little Roger babies around. That little Copy (Roger son) she has is adorable, too! SUCH beautiful, sweet dogs!

Whooo-hooooO!!! I absolutely adore Abby, Corey, and all of their dogs, and I can't wait to see what those two produce! :D Congratulations and best of luck with the breedings/pregnancy!!! Say "Hi!" to Abby for me!!!

Oh Julie, I absolutely will say hi to Abby for you. She is such a doll in general, not to mention working with her in doing a breeding.

I saw Roger's babies over a year ago and than I met him in person at Westminster last year and (Abby). Oh, after our failed breeding in Jan with Miya - Abby and I hugged like long lost friends. (Miya was to be bred to him). She related to my call of despair and crying the day the collection arrived at my house, only to get Miya's full blood work an hour later that cancelled the breeding.............. :-(

So........ we are on to bigger and better things and smiling now and can't wait to see Jazz x Roger babies in November.

So glad you sound as thrilled as I feel. Although the stress for me will come back during whelp.

But I will post and cross that bridge when I get there :-) LOL

Pups have to be at least 6 weeks old but you just call me girl and you can come,....... hug, cuddle, cry..... and i will be right there with you.

You do know you are gonna cry don't you? And you know I will be crying with you........ I have been there with my last litter (and others). Its okay.

Makes you a better person in my eyes :-) SERIOUSLY.

Its a good healing process, trust me...... been there, done that, more than once.

I remember seeing Roger finish his CH...with a 5 pt major the same weekend that Gunny (Gunner, another of Abby's dogs) took a 5 pt major, all at Pawcatuck LRC last September. It was a dream weekend for Abby and her sister, for sure! They cleaned up!!! LOTS of celebratin' back at the hotel each evening! What a great group of friends. :D

Abby is really such a special person, and being in the same situation myself (similar interests, etc.) where the dogs are first and foremost housedogs and family members, it makes me so happy to see her have so much success in and out of the show ring.

Patty, I am so happy that this day has finally come for you. It has been a long road to furtility, but it is here and you need to celebrate that you made it.

I think that you have made a wonderful choice for Miya and I cannot wait to see those babies in November!

Just for you my friend :3dance: :3dance:

We will not be able to have a puppy watch. If you mean my updating on the board as whelping progresses. Computer is on the second floor and we will be whelping on the first. Jazz being a maiden I won't be leaving her to get on the computer.

But I will surely make our announcement when we are all finished.

Julie you are so right about Abby she deserves all she has accomplished with her beautiful dogs (and horses). That clean up at Pawcatuck most have been awsome, wish I had been there to celebrate. In fact she is there now. Waiting to hear from her on how her boys are placing.

Julie, (Breezline) you know my door is always open. Donna was just asking me last night when we were breeding how your visit was. I told her it was great and about the wonderful prime rib we had thanks to you!

Thanks everyone for the dances. Keep em going!

Oops...Sorry! I forgot "puppy watch" would infer a web cam type thing. I just meant that it's exciting to know when delivery is close and we can all wait on pins and needles for the news! I can't imagine how busy a time it is when then whelping begins....!

Sorry don't have a web cam but I will keep you posted if I can as her temp. drops.

Jen, I am curious to see the pups too. I know he throws nice dark coat and eye, not to mention bone, etc. - saw a litter in January at 5 weeks old. And hey, just look at Copy - very nice boy. You have a lot of time to see how his offspring mature before you are ready to breed, which is great.

When will you find out if she's preggo? I have no idea what the gestational cycle of dogs is, I'm totally clueless.

Patty/Breeder
09-26-2008, 04:37 PM
Gestation is 63 days from ovulation. Progesterone testing determines ovulation and when to breed (day 2 and 4 after ovulation). Her due date is 11/18/08.

Sometimes you can tell by personality change. But usually by week 5 you start to see some weight gain.

There is a blood test but not accurate enough for me to spend the money.

I think we are good to go - she is starting to fill out just a bit and her nipples are pink (yes nipples popped but that can't be gauged here becaused they popped on her first heat at 11 months old). But will know more in this week coming up.

So now it is time to do the girly dance. I want a black and choc. girl from this litter.

So as tired as you are Jane(and everyone else) you must keep dancin........... you all know I appreciate it.. :-)

I have a question which I should know the answer to since I've worked in many animal hospitals but I don't:confused:

Why is it ok to xray a preg dog but not a human? and why don't they just do Ultrasound on dogs instead of xrays? I'm sure part of it is because a human has usually 1 fetas and dogs have many but just curious.

You can US but x-ray is more definitive for a head count. The pups are only 4-5 days away from birth so it is not harmful to them. I have seen repro vets giving talks on this. Some will not do x-rays for fear of hurting pups but from what I have heard and read it is safe (my vet/breeder agrees) - I would rather know how many pups to expect and be able to know better if there is a pup still in there and a problem.

Some people will US earlier to confirm pregnancy and than x-ray later as well for a head count.

Just signed on today (note my "puppy" status! LOL!) but wanted to say best wishes for a safe whelp. It is always nervewracking, isn't it!!???

You'll be ~10 days ahead of Mata and me... I bred MY Jazzy as well, but the stud had a little foxtail abscess /incident ~3 wks earlier and the sperm health was seriously compromised so I'm not holding out much hope there.

Just curious, but for fun have you ever measured your girls? It keeps me somewhat occupied at least as I've compiled spreadsheets over the generations and years. :o: I measure at the chest (don't gain much at all til about week 7 there), at the last / floater rib, and at the waist at weekly intervals beginning at ovulation. By 5 wks, if pregnant, they usually do show a couple inch increase in the waist and last rib measurement. Because (my) Jazz has not shown an increase, I determined a food increase was not in our plans... perhaps we'll just get back to the agility/obed ring a bit faster, instead! I'll xray if I have any questions, of course.... Anne

Hi Anne, welcome to the board.

If you want my advice please do increase your girls food as there may be a few pups in there. You never know in a case like this until you x-ray.

My Jazz never showed much of anything - expanded more in the rib area - at vet this morning she has only gained about 1.5 lbs. and x-rays show a singleton pup.

I am very disappointed to say the least with all the planning and time involved.

Now I pray and ask all board members to pray that she can deliver this singleton naturaly and not need a c-section and of course that pup will be healthy. We have only had one other singleton in all these years and he was 2 lbs and still born - delivered naturaly.

Her due date is 11/18 but her milk is in - temp. has not dropped (more definitive than milk IMO) - so i will be keeping a close eye on her. She could go early and she could go late with a singleton. I also pray that she goes during the day and not on Sunday because if she needs a C I don't want to have to go to the ER - would rather my vet does it.

How dissapointing for you. I am so sorry Patty. I will send you all the prayers and good thoughts that I can for Jazz to have a safe, natural birth.

Oh crud. :( I went thru this last January with Jazz's sister, Fuji who was pulled into season 2.5 mos earlier than I'd expected and I think that was why she didn't take (had a previous litter of 7 w/ chilled semen from a 13.5 yo male no less so I knew there was nothing wrong w/ her!). Anyhow, that's precisely why I'm holding off on food... Jazz's still getting more than she needs, imo because we aren't doing any training/comp right now-- so is probably 2lbs heavier than her maximum agility comp weight. Unlike many, I don't run my dogs "skinny"--lean, but not thin. Actually Fuji looked more like she was carrying ~4 pups and her measurements increased enough that I did increase her food at week 6. A friend brought over a doppler and thought she heard 4 also... likely the same pup from 4 different angles in retrospect. We ended up w/ one pup, placental detachment at day 63, death, and pup was too big to push out w/ oxytoxin so we still had to have a c section at emergency 20 hrs later (weekend why of course!).... no fun at all.

Jazz just isn't showing fluid build up at all even and ovulated the same time as Mata who is definately carrying pups. When Mata's nipples suddenly enlarged a week ago or so, Jazz's have stayed put and are still dark. I sent my vet photos of both taken at 4 wks and 6 wks post ovulation and she's agreeing that if there is any question at all, we'll do an xray next week or 10 days. She used to breed, still shows Labs, so I feel confident what we're doing.

Did you do progesterone so you have the due date dialed in well? You should be safe if so. Even though it didn't really help me w/ Fujis because I didn't do the xray (I could kill myself now for believing the hand held doppler!), I'm a firm believer now. In the future, if in doubt, the xray is going to be done. Jazz is very short coupled, and so in my heart, I really think I'd be seeing something by now. Mata on the other hand could be carrying a huge litter despite her measurements only being up by 4"-- but she's much longer loined so will carry the pups more easily. Amazingly, Jazz had 12 pups in her first litter, but it was very painful to look at her from week 6 on.... Anne

Anne, sorry I forgot to answer your earlier question on belly measuring. I don't do that.

I do progesterone so have her due date pinned down.

I'm sorry for the loss of your singleton. Its never easy.

No, it sure wasn't but one thing that I took comfort in all the weekend was that Fuji was fine. Her spirits were great even when the vet techs took her for potty walks that tail was going. She did have a temp drop, btw... just nothing serious happened prior to my seeing the discharge and because her first 2 pups in her first litter had detached (rubbery sacks at delivery), I wasn't as worried to wait an hour longer. Big mistake I think... The pup was already dead when we got to the ER vet 2 hrs later.

How I'd wished I'd have had one live pup by c-section instead of a $2500 dead pup though. I still don't know why it detached so early... really bothers me as you'd have thought a singleton would hang in a few days longer-- I had a friend this summer whose Terv bitch delivered 6 pups on day 66 (it was a frozen surgical implant so definitely pinpointed)!

Anyhow I'm a bit worried now that maybe she's one to detach early, so if I do breed her in the spring, I am thinking of scheduling a c-section on day 62-63, just in case. I sure love what I got from the first litter...

Bottom line is you've got to go w/ your gut instinct. I sure don't like the idea of cutting for no good reason either. Could you get an idea of puppy size and positioning on that xray? Hopefully it's all going to be fine. Fingers crossed, prayers coming your way. Anne

Anne, I am planning on going in on due date for another x-ray to re check positioning of pup if her temp has not dropped by noon. At that point I will schedule a C for Thur. (Im thinking but will discuss it with my vet). I'm not concerned about going 2 days over due date with a singleton but won't go 3.

Original x-ray shows pup head toward chest and head and 1/2 body up under rib cage - so the reason I want to see if it has changed position prior to doing a C.

If her temp drops Wed and she goes into labor we go from there.

At this point I am just praying and I have the support of a great network of breeders to help me with this singleton once its here. I've never had to raise one as mentioned. in all our years of breeding 7+ size litters - I am surely getting an education in this.

I just pray all goes well and I learn something that I can pass onto others in the future.

Wish you were closer, I'd be happy to add yours to mine! Do you know of anyone in your area with a litter due? It'd sure be nice from a puppy socialization angle if you could find someone you trust that is (me being the worry wart I am, it would have to be a VERY special person!). Or maybe YOU can borrow a couple pups from someone w/ a big litter???

I'll sure be thinking of you. I am forever going to worry about early detachment now w/ Fuji so think in her case, I'll be headed in on day 63 if I suspect any issues next spring. Anne

Anne, I so appreciate your posts.

Yes, I have a wonderful friend (my mentor in showing) who has a litter due 2 days after Jazz and x-rays show at least 8 pups.

So after I know how many she has and what the bitch is up against, I would ask her to take my pup if god forbid Jazz rejects it from being a maiden to a c-section and no hormones kicking in. It could happen but having Miya here to show her the ropes so to speak (if she won't reject Miya - her mother) I should be okay.

So if all goes well I would have my friends pups for play dates later on for socialization (3/4 hour away) or if her girl has too many pups I am going to ask her to let me raise 2-3 of hers with my singleton. Big plus is we both feed the same food, etc. so hopefully it will all work out.

I'll cross that bridge once this baby gets here.

Please see my update in the fire hydrant section in my thread asking for prayers for Jazz.

Patty, I can't remember who told me that temps are lower at one time of day than another (or if there is any real truth to that!). Interestingly, I took Mata's temp (due 11/29) last night as a baseline and it was only 99.6F. This morning, it was a more normal (for her) 100.3F. Half sister Jazz was only 99.8F, gasp this am though. She's the one I'm worried about as she was bred, but the male had a foxtail abscess a couple weeks earlier requiring vetting/drain/antibiotics, etc., and his sperm looked bad at breeding time-- so bad the breeders told me to keep my deposit check. :( So that is the one I'm really keeping an eye on though she doesn't look the part AT ALL (no boobs, no increase in girth, no nothing). Wouldn't you know this is the first time I've ever considered breeding 2 at once? So anyhow, I dont' think the little temperature bounces are telling us anything at this point. Hang in there. You are doing EVERYTHING so much "righter" than I did with Fuji last winter. Anne

Thanks Anne. I know the temp up and down is normal and can go on for quite a while before they finally go down and stay there.

I'm trying to hang in and calm my nerves. We will most likely need another prog. tomorrow morning - absolutely can not take this pup until it goes below 2 - and it can even without a temp. drop. Or her temp could drop along with it and she may not go into labor because of the singleton.

Good luck with your girls - 2 litters is a lot of work but it can be done.

Agree totally w/ the progesterone testing--- Fuji DID have a temp drop this past winter, btw. Only to 98.8F though... and normally mine dip to low 98 or 97 range. With her first litter it was well over 24 hrs (28?) before presenting her first pup (which did detach according to discharge ~1 hr earlier!). We were on our way to the ER vet clinic when she RAN into her crate in the garage while loading her up, and had her first! She must have heard me say the "V" word. lol. So there, threaten Jazz w/ that "V" word! Anne
