View Full Version : Fish oil warning!
Lake lover 01-19-2009, 07:50 AM As per the girls new holistic vet and from reading several threads here about fish oil, I started the girls on the Costco one a day fish oil supplement. I'd given them other fish oil capsules before and had no problems.
Well, within a day or two of starting the new supplement, they started getting crazy with itching and goopey eyes. Daisy started losing hair by the handful and wound up with several bald spots. I thought it was our hot, dry, windy weather. After a month of this, I stopped the fish oil and within a couple days they were markedly better. I looked at the ingredients on the bottle and found out it contains soy!
They've been off the fish oil now for almost a week and life is finally starting to return to normal.
Please make sure if you have sensitive dogs that you read the labels of everything you're giving them. Lessen learned for me!
mederic24 01-19-2009, 09:48 AM Thanks for the heads up.
Makwa's 01-19-2009, 09:57 AM I would have never thought to check the ingredient list on fish oil! Thanks, I checked mine and all it says is Fish oil.
uplander 01-19-2009, 10:07 AM It is usually ones that add Vit. E So you also have to be careful on Vit E. supplements if your dog has issues with soy.. Very few Vit E products don't have soy.. but some use another form of Vit E.
Lias_antics427 01-19-2009, 10:34 AM Well, I'm glad you got that sorted out! This is exactly why I have ended up getting the few supplements Lia is on... from GNC. I got burned once when I grabbed some cranberry pills from CVS- Lia had a icky reaction to them.
The GNC label for her cranberry pills actually says this: No sugar, no starch, no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, sodium free, no wheat, no gluten, no corn, no soy, no dairy and yeast free.
I  GNC. Their supplements are perfect for Lia's many sensitivities & issues. Kind of pricey, though.
IndyLabMom 01-19-2009, 10:47 AM I am so glad you posted this. My fish oil from Walmart has soy too! Sophie has been losing hair around her right eye and Emma is losing hair like crazy. I will stop giving and see if it changes. Thanks!

That isn't the case with the ones that I have. They don't have Vit. E added at all, and actually say they are 99.99% PURIFIED FISH OIL, but that they do contain soy. :( I will be looking to see if I can find something else for the boys, since they like to have their meds, but I don't want to expose them to unnecessary allergens.
Bailey's Mommy 01-19-2009, 01:10 PM Good to know!!
ImWithThePyr 01-19-2009, 05:08 PM wow.. thanks for the heads up! I'm using Nature's Bounty... no soy in those. They do contain gelatin and glycerin, but i am thinking that is just the pill itself, not the oil inside. Maxwell only gets the oil.
jb888s 01-19-2009, 08:02 PM OH MY GOD... I think I am in love with you right now Lynn!! 100%. We switched the boys to the BJ's version of fish oil and since then Duke's allergies have gone WILD. We thought that was weird since there's over a foot of snow on the ground so in theory all of his inhaled allergies should be covered, and he's on ONLY allergy dog food.... Well, his fish oil has freaking SOY in it!!! So tomorrow I'll be in search of a new fish oil capsul for him. Thank you SOOOOOO much!!!
greenfreak. 01-20-2009, 05:57 AM Thanks for posting this. We haven't had issue on the Kirkland brand so now I know that ours probably doesn't have a soy allergy. :)
3Muttsketeers 01-20-2009, 06:02 AM OH CRAP!! I have the same fish oil and was wondering why my guys coats are getting dry and nasty!
I will go find fish oil without the soy.
my boys get Natures Made fish oil and i just checked-it has soy but they are ok on it.i panicked because i just got 2 more huge jars and didnt remember if i bought the same brand.i did and it does.
LabLoverNMiami 01-20-2009, 07:12 AM OMG- How scary ! Thanks for the heads up! Who would expect soy in a fish oil suppliment??
I give salmon oil capsules from Trader Joe's.
Slow Hand Luke 01-20-2009, 11:56 AM I give Luke Costco fish oil caps,he is not loosing any fur but he does lick his feet alot.Maybe I should switch fish caps:confused:
Patty/Breeder 01-20-2009, 12:43 PM A lot of brands contain soy. I don't know the reason for it but I think you will find more capsules that contain it than those that don't.
So glad you figured out what was causing the hair loss and posted it here for the rest of us.
This is the one I use. No soy or E (I supplement with E)

ThorsMom 01-20-2009, 01:43 PM We use Iceland Pure. It's 100% salmon oil.
g'smom 01-20-2009, 04:44 PM Thanks--and good to know. I take them and may go off them!
Lake lover 01-25-2009, 09:24 AM I just checked Daisy's cranberry capsules and they contain soy too. I would suggest checking everything you're supplementing with if your dogs are soy sensitive!
NancyO 01-25-2009, 10:20 AM I just checked Nordic Naturals which is what I give Charlie. It says the vitamin E is derived from soy (grrrr). He's been on it for months without any problems. Could he develop one?
Patty, I checked your link. Does it say anywhere on the bottle that the fish oil is purified? After losing my first lab to cancer I tend to be paranoid about stuff like that.
Thanks,
Nancy
