That is sad...I hope someone can help. I would appear to have to be someone without any other animals though. :(

The person who posted at petfinder message board about Brownie said:

This dog came into our clinic as a stray about 4 weeks ago. Brownie was being moved to another enclosure and he got loose and another intact male that was outside got into a fight. I got in the middle of it and when I pulled them apart, Brownie bit me as a reflex action. Unfortunately, due to his "stray" status we had no record of rabies vaccination on him. We advertised in the local papers for someone to come forward to verify his rabies vaccination status in order that he not be euthanized. Unfortunately, no one stepped forward. Now Brownie is in jeopardy of losing his life and his head. We can save him is we can find a foster to keep him quarentined until he can be adopted out in November. He will be neutered and vaccinated. PLEASE HELP SAVE HIS LIFE! IF YOU CAN HOUSE HIM UNTIL NOV. AND WE THEN CAN ADOPT HIM OUT. We will supply all food and medical for him. Please email me at Leilam1065@aol.com for any help that you can offer.

Both Brownie and the other dog are not neutered, and the lady who posted said that "the other intact male that was outside got into a fight".Once Brownie is neutered, and not in a shelter environment under stress, he would most likely be ok with other dogs.
As for putting him down because they have no rabies record, I think they should have him tested by a vet to determine his status.

Hi again
I got a reply to an email I wrote to Leila, a shelter worker who posted about Brownie at petfinder message board:

In a message dated 6/5/2005 2:36:24 PM Eastern Standard Time, MarionTL@telus.net writes:
Hi
I read about Brownie at petfinder message board. My name is "Labfan" at the board, but my actual name is Marion Lindsay,a nd I live in BC Canada.
I was wondering if you could have Brownie tested for rabies by a veterinarian? I would imagine you can tell by testing, and also signs and symptoms would appear if if he has rabies. Also, if you take him to a local vet, the vet may recognize the dog, but that is not very likely due to the fact that Brownie is a stray and nobody came to claim him. The fact that both dogs were not neutered would be the main cause for the fight. So I imagine once Brownie is in a less stressful environment in a foster home, and is neutered, he will probably be fine with other dogs.
I posted at the labretrievernet board that I belong to. Hoping someone will come forward to help. One rescue said in reply to my post that they do not have room, all too typical.
Regards,
Marion

Dear Marion, Thanks so much for your concern and your advice. Since my recent posting of Brownie's info, our Vet at the kennel has found out further info on him that states that after 10 days of quarentine and observation, he does not show any signs or symptoms of Rabies then he can and was vaccinated and is now ready to be place in a foster home and adopted out. Here in the states it has always been much confusion whether an animal with unknown history of vaccination is to be put to sleep or not. Fortunately, the issue seems to be whether the bite is from an unknown animal. Since Brownie was in a fight with the other male and neither has shown any signs of Rabies. They both can go to homes now. The unfortunate part is the the kennel at Ft. Dix ( a military base) is only supposed to hold an animal for three days. Brownie is way past that. The vet is really needing to place him. The only way that an animal here in the states are tested for rabies is via euthanization and decapitation. They then send the head off to the State Department of Health where it is tested. So, here the bottom line is that I have to update the Petfinder site and hopefully find him a home. He will have all his shots, microchipped and I will pay to have him neutered if I cannot get our vet to do it. We are very limited on the services that we can offer our strays. Brownie is a mix. I assume that you have seen his picture. His temperment is very good, he just needs to be loved and has shared his outside kennel time with other dogs. He came in with a Siberian Husky and was always allowed to exercise with him. They got along like two peas in a pod. He just did not get along with this other male dog. Both of them are good independently, just not together.. I thank you very much for your posting crossposting. It is very difficult to find homes for these dogs that are often times left behind by their military owner.
Please feel free to contact me in the future and thanks again for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Leila
