He is AKC large 87 lbs english type lab. My wife and I are moving due to a new job and we will have to be in a apartment for a while and that is no place for our lab who is used to open land and hunting. He is gun broke and did pretty well last duck season. is is a great dog.

I'm in the Dallas Fort Worth area and I will not ship. Must be face to face.

Thank you.

PLease contact a local rescue. While we understand that there are circumstances that require rehoming labs....this board is not a personal classified section. You be more satisfied with placing your lab in a rescue than to "give" a dog away to someone that isn't screened. Rescues screen and require potential applications to submit to homevisits. Good luck.

I sent you a PM with an e-mail address of someone who might be able to help you find a good home for this guy.
Also, some breeders (at least the really good ones) will always take a dog back for any reason and place those dogs in new homes. In fact, some breeders require you to do that.
You can also have his picture put up in the referral section of the Heart of Texas Lab Rescue page.

How old is he?

Thank you. I only listed him here because I know that all of you that wanted him would really care for him. I'm afraid to list him anywhere else.

Thank you.

Can you get someone to care for your dog temporarily, (maybe a family member, relative) until you get out of the apartment and into a house? I can't imagine giving up my dog... :frown:

Forgot to mention....be very careful when you advertise "Free to good home", you never know what kind of people you will get...many do not have the dog's best interest at heart...I have seen many abuse cases from people that got dogs for "free". Be very careful...your dog is just beautiful!

I am looking for a dog just like yours. I to faced the same situation about 8 years ago and it was hard for me. I took time to make sure my girl got a good home and I was happy with the result. I also hunt and will be able to provide a GOOD home for this young man. I live in The Woodlands north of Houston and would be willing to meet you, I know how important it is to meet the person who would be leaving your young man to. We have plenty of trails, ponds and parks around here. We also have hunting property in Llano and Coleman with plenty of other dogs with him to associate. Please consider me for your young man, He will be in a loving and caring home.
Thanks,
Tony

As a former breeder of Chesapeaks, I know how to screen. I have 4 dogs and my brother is taking my chessie and bloodhound until I can get another house. The basset hound is compact enough to live in our apartment plus he's 10 years old, so he isn't active anymore.

No other family member has pets so no one else will take our lab. I trust the people here more than I do anywhere else seeing how you guys have such a passion for dogs. If I can't find him a wonderful home then he will be forced to live in the tiny apartment. I really hate to do that to a dog that knows nothing but a huge yard to run and play in and a park with a small lake to swim in. That's all he's every known.

He's in 100% great health. He's on heartgard, all shots are up to date. He has AKC papers. He is on Eukanuba PP.

Duckdoggin,
Just out of curiosity, how did you find this board?

I have been looking online for a lab at resue sites, shelters and found this link while doing research.

Sorry, but I want him going to someone here that's more well known than you. No offense, but for all I know you might have just registered.

Again, I am sorry.

Well, as a matter of fact I did just sign up. I understand your concern and do not fault you, however, I can promise you if you give me chance to meet, you would see I'm just as loving and caring as anyone else on this site. I don't want to see your boy go to someone who is just going to put him in the backyard and forget about him. I have two ponds and a park less than 150 yards from me I really think he would like it here. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm begging, all I'm asking is to just think about it. My e-mail is ninerfan55@sbcglobal.net
Thanks again,
Tony

Ouch. That's a little harsh, isn't it? :quest: Just because someone isn't "well known" on the board doesn't disqualify them as good home. Personally, I think the best way to determine if someone would provide a good home is to do a home visit - not by looking at how well known someone is on an online message board for Labs.

He just wants someone he knows he can trust. To be fair, Duckdoggin's very first post on this board basically said, "I want your dog." Duckdoggin might be a very nice person who would provide an excellent home, but with someone who has been around the board for a while, we can look up old posts and learn a lot about someone. If I was in his shoes, I would be more comfortable with an offer of a home from, say ZenCat (who sounds like she might have the world's perfect dog home) than from a total stranger.

He is absolutely gorgeous! I know of 2 labs that lived in the same apartment, but they went out on long free run walks/hikes daily. Dogs can live in small places as long as they get their free runs in. I wish you could take him with you.
But it is good that you came here to post, as we are all lab freaks, which is obvious, and there are good contacts here. Please do not advertise "free to good home" as it unfortunately attracts the wrong people sometimes.
Have you tried any lab rescues yet?

Labfan, I want to try here first. I'm a bit nervous about taking him to a rescue. I feel better about it if I get to check into it first hand on who get him or who doesn't.

I can't edit it or I'd change it to Lab adoption

ouch again...why do you think you'd do a better job than a very experienced rescue that has place many many dogs? I agree w/no1utefan...number of posts or length of time on any board has no baring on the kind of home that can be provided.

Why haven't you contacted his breeder? The really good breeders I know want their dogs back?
Good luck.

I don't know about DFW rescue, but HOTLRC wouldn't take a dog from a private individual. I think they only take dogs out of kill shelters. We don't have enough foster homes. Private individuals can post on the telephone referral page on our site.

I'd have to agree with Autumnsmom. Rescues have been there and done that and match dogs with the best possible homes. I think you are going to shoot yourself in the foot with that.

He is a great looking dog. Too bad we are looking for a female, otherwise I would consider. As a new member on this board, I understand your anxiety over the whole thing. I'd hate to have to give a dog up, and I would probably want to place it myself as well. Not that I don't trust any of the fine people I've met on here, but I could only imagine how hard it would be to give him up not knowing where he was going. I would definately look for help from the rescues on this board though, I'm sure they can refer someone who is looking for a dog like yours directly to you.

Best of luck to you and your dog.

I'd rather screen the people myself. He's my dog and I trust my judgement more than anyone else with my dog's life. I use to be a Chessie breeder for 11 years, so I know how to screen people just as good if not better than a rescue. My wife and I did the basset hound rescue for 3 years, so I'm not some newbie at this. Thank you for your thoughts though, but a rescue place is not an option.

Let me clear this basset hound rescue up so you will understand. My wife and I did it for 3 years. We would pick up a basset from a unwanted home that was no longer wanted or had been abused then take him or her to the location of his or her foster home until a good home could be found.

A few people were foster homes. Our job was to pick them up and take them there and we also were apart of the screening to find them a good home. That's how we got our basset named Elvis who is still with is at 10 years old.

Thank you for your thoughts.

A former rescuer..placing a free to good home ad? Well..it is obviously none of my business but good luck to you.

That is quite an odd thing, as all rescuers know that "free to good home" ads just generate a lot of problems. Impulse adoption, puppymillers acquiring unaltered dogs, etc. And what about the original breeder? I know if I were ever unable to keep my two dogs that came from breeders they would want them back in a heartbeat.

Also, shooting someone down who's only posted 4 times on this board is quite unfair. How do you know if this person would be able to offer a good home unless you "screen" this person like you say you know how? Being a former breeder and rescuer you should understand that.

LOL, you guys stop it.

He is free to a good home. He is my dog and I will put him in a good home that I see fit. If you don't like why I'm giving him up or what I say then that's tuff. If you hate it that bad then by all means adopt him. This all of the sudden teaming up is a bit childish. I'll respond to the positive post and not the mud slinging post

Snickerz2001, since you seem to know it all and what's best then maybe you have the home he needs. Send me you phone number and we can talk about me getting him to you. You seem to be the person for the job.

Good luck finding a home for your boy, whichever route you take. I do think, though, that labs can live a happy life in an apartment (mine has!), it just takes a lot more effort on our part to bring them to the park/baseball field/lake, etc. for fetching and swimming and playing.

I locked it, the information is all there. Like it or lump it.

Really, if you have a dog to rehome and you have been on the board for more than two seconds then you would realize there are a ton of people here to get ahold that can help. Please choose that option.
