Alfie has never been a 'big' eater but recently went off his food completely. His energy levels were fine and he would eat treats, even his kibble if offered as a treat. As I was getting close to running out I decided to change his food, partly because he wasn't eating much and partly because his only solid poop is the one he does first thing in the morning....plus he poops about four times per day.

Anyways, Saturday I bought Wainwrights food (UK brand) instead of Purina Beta. Good food. I mixed with his Beta & he loved it...ate it all. Since then he's hardly eaten anything & has slept much more than usual (guessing his energy levels have dropped). Haven't noticed a change in poo except there's less of it.

Today I bought some wet food to mix with his kibble as he didn't eat more than 10 pieces of kibble for breakfast & he's devoured every meal. Normally fed twice a day.

Now my question is...Do I continue with the added wet food (minimal) which I don't really want to do or is there another way around this?

I also weighed him today & at 24wks he weighs 42lbs. At 22wks he weighed 39.2lbs which means his monthly weight gain has dropped.

In all honesty, I would be taking him to the vet.

I agree with the poster above. You should take your pup to the vet. The only time Sophie ever turned her nose up at food was when she had giardia.

Alfie is at the age where his adult teeth are erupting and they could be bothering him. Have you examined his teeth to make sure that his baby teeth are not being retained? If you haven't been looking at his teeth you should start now. He should be trained to let people examine his mouth. You could try adding some water to his kibble for a while to see if that helps. Taking his temperature is always a good step to see if something more serious could be going on. Here is a link (http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/digestion/pregastric/dogpage.html)with pictures to help you identify his dental anatomy.

If you suspect that he has eaten something that he shouldn't have, then a trip to the vet is in order. If he was recently vaccinated that could make him a little punky too. Good Luck. Alfie is a cutie!

But as I said in my post, with the addition of wet food he's eating just fine and right now he's charging around with the cat.

I just don't know whether to continue with the added wet food for a few days and then wean him back to just kibble. He has no worms or other stomach/intestinal problems.

I think we posted at about the same time. Adding a little wet food for a while is ok too.

Lol...I think we did. Alfie is having teething problems...he has retained his baby canines. Luckily he has lost the bottom two in the last couple of days but still has the top ones. I check them every day and the vet looked at them two weeks ago & told me to take him back at 6 months (in two weeks time). I think there is some pressure there although no inflamation or anything. Maybe there is a connection there..so thank you. I'm hoping the top two will come out in the next few days, if not the vet will have to remove them.

Now is the time to get an old sock out and play tug with him. Dental extractions can be costly, even baby teeth.

As always, I have to ask about his body condition. Most, but not all Labs will eat more than is good for them and look for more. Check his ribs, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx

Every puppy I have had has gone through an eating strike ... usually when they are teething. And every time, it makes me crazy! I think they'll never eat, they'll get too skinny, OH my poor starving puppy. NOT! LOL They also tend to go off their food about the time when they no longer need the midday meal. Once I cut that out, breakfast and dinner get gobbled up.
As always, if in doubt, have your vet check him out.
