View Full Version : FYI: Moving to Smugmug?
KrissyK79 02-26-2008, 08:35 AM I know alot of people are not so thrilled with the changes at Phanfare.
I found that at Smugmug, you can get 50% first year ($20 or $30) of when coming from Flickr, Phanfare or Imagestation.

This tool is supposed to help move from another service to Smugmug.

Little Boomer 02-26-2008, 08:36 AM Thanks Krissy for the information. I am thinking I am going with smugmug. I can't find the code when moving from phanfare to smugmug.
Paws n Jaws 02-26-2008, 08:41 AM I'm torn...
KrissyK79 02-26-2008, 08:45 AM Sorry, I think I read somewhere, the phanfare code is phanfare, flickr is flickr - have you done the trial yet?
I'm still moving around too, and trying to find a good spot!! I really like flickr now, but it doesnt host videos, and its only free as long as I have my sbc account, then its $25/yr. Smugmug hosts videos w the semipro account and its $60/yr, or $30 first year.
What I reallllly want is something to transfer pics from Photobucket, Snapfish & Shutterfly!! All those pics I dont even have on my computer anymore, and Snapfish & SHutterfly cost a fortune for a backup disk!
KrissyK79 02-26-2008, 08:46 AM Ahoy Phanfare Refugees! Be usin' the code phanfare at signup, for 50% off the first year's passage! And smugglr now will bring your booty from Phanfare to SmugMug yarrrrrrrr! .
Little Boomer 02-26-2008, 09:01 AM Thanks Krissy!!! :)
Super_Cooper 02-26-2008, 09:03 AM Arg. I am so torn with this. I was almost positive I was going to go with zenfolio, but the more I play around with it, the more things I find I don't like. Specifically, you can not date your album, so they are not listed in chronological order. Then, when you are within the album, you can only choose to organize your photos by file name, or date taken (so I can't just pull a picture from the back and move it to the front).
I think I am going to start a smugmug and play around with that one too to see if it works better.
On a postive note, I strongarmed phanfare into downgrading my account back to 1.0 so I am able to use that smugglr software.
Little Boomer 02-26-2008, 09:07 AM Beth, both smugmug and zenfolio are the same way with organizing the pics. It stinks. I think I am going to go with smugmug because it is cheaper but the only problem is I can't access it from work and zenfolio I can.
Paws n Jaws 02-26-2008, 09:09 AM So the major disadvantage with the new phanfare software is the whole "registering your friends" kinda thing... right?
Spartsmom 02-26-2008, 09:19 AM I have been with Smugmug now for awhile so I can't really compare it to anything else. I like it tho ... if anybody is coming over to smugmug you can use me or anybody else that has a smugmug acct. as a referral and you and I would get $$$ off too. Just pm me if you want that code or my email add. :) I don't know if you can use it in conjunction with the other offer but it is worth looking into ... :)
Luc-Luca-Lucas 02-26-2008, 09:22 AM I just did smugmug about a month ago and I like it. I've never used the others though.
Victoria and Amber do you have the professional membership or the $39.95 membership?
I'm looking for something that I can display high resolution photos 1024 pixels minimum but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg either. Currently I'm using Shutterfly but it doesn't do it for me.
Thanks, Shayne
CaraBella 02-26-2008, 04:40 PM I went with Zenfolio....unfortunately uploading to smugmug was INCREDIBLY SLOW for me :( :( !!!!!
I did like the fact that Smugmug had more themes available, but it did not make up for the slow speed.
GussyandHudson 02-26-2008, 04:43 PM I might go over to smugmug as well..thanks for the code :) My family is no longer able to see my phanfare pictures..they are not computer literate and really don't like signing up for things. I think they would rather just put in a website and come right to my page.
GussyandHudson 02-26-2008, 06:41 PM Right now I am on a free trial for both smugmug and Zenfolio. I'm not sure which one I prefer yet..neither of them are as easy as phanfare was to download. I do think I like the overall feel of smugmug better.
I was just perusing the canon forum and they seem to be thinking the same as we all are about phanfare. I think a lot of people are leaving.

I have the cheaper membership right now. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time, I do believe, so if you don't like the plan you're on you can always change it. :)
GussyandHudson 02-26-2008, 08:59 PM So I e-mailed Phanfare to tell them that I did not like the new upgrade and that I was closing down my account and they e-mailed me back (quite promptly) to tell me that they will gladly refund me my money (even though I didn't ask) and said that they find their new upgrade has a lot more benefits and is more convenient.
I'm glad that I have my money back because Smugmug is a lot cheaper and now I feel better about going to them (now that I know I didn't just waste my money on phanfare)

I have found that the people at phanfare are actually pretty nice to deal with and are very responsive (they always answered my email within an hour or two). I told them my complaints and they told me the same thing as they told you, Tracey. They would gladly refund my money if I was going to leave and they even suggested going to smugmug.
It just makes me wonder. . . in doing research on smugmug and zenfolio, I came across so many disgrunteled phanfare users. The ONLY time I have seen anything positive about the change is from the actual people at phanfare. I know they are really sticking to their guns on this one, but I wonder if in the long run this change will help them or hurt them.

You haven't had the experience of being upgraded. If you really want to play around with it, someone with an upgraded version can always add you as a friend (which automatically sends you to the upgrade list - you would be upgraded in 24 hours).

Well on one hand I totally see the value of the "friends" concept. I've never completely liked having Jacob's pictures unlocked on the net. But on the other hand, it's nice to just give people the addy to the website without having to go through the whole PROCESS of adding them.
Little Boomer 02-27-2008, 08:26 AM I moved almost all my pictures to smugmug and the more I play around with it the more I like it. I can arrange my galleries so I can put them inorder the way I want. :)
kallie 02-27-2008, 08:30 AM I recently joined smugmug and I like it. I did have phanfare, but decided to change over. I don't find them slow at all:confused: You can get discounts also, I paid 31.00 for a year.

Shayne I just upgraded to pro recently. Just so I can have a little more professional look (still haven't totally figured out my homepage grrr) until I actually have a client base and am making a little money this will have to do. LOL I also can price and sell prints and I can right click protect my pics at the pro level.
Yes you can upload and display at high res.
Like I said I haven't really had anything else (I did have Imagestation for awhile ... a long time ago) and I do like smugmug a lot :D.
Ray you can make a gallery password protected in smugmug. I like that too.
Spartsmom 02-27-2008, 09:54 AM I can give you my coupon # if anybody wants a few $$$ off for a membership on smugmug. LOL I am not pushy or anything.
I think it is only like $5 but I guess $5 is $5 right? I get some $$ off too towards my renewal.
3lablady 02-27-2008, 09:58 AM I just started using Smugmug this past week and really like it. Never used phanfare, but still use Shutterfly. But like how I can set up my galleries better in smugmug.
kallie 02-27-2008, 10:15 AM If you use the coupon code "gwnw" at smugmug, you should get 20% off the price. For instance it was 40.00 and I got it for 31.00...:thumb4:
Jen
I signed up with SmugMug last night. Have to say that I'm impressed so far. It did take awhile to upload 90 photos at 3 meg each though. ;)
I got the pro account as I hope to also use it with my AP endeavors once that gets off the ground. No pun intended. :D
Cheers, and thanks for talking about SmugMug here. I'd never heard of it before.
