My oldest girl is going to be 12 this fall. I'm interested to hear what type of G/C supplement others are giving their Labs and where they get them from.

My Toby is just 4 years old and he is on Cosequin DS just for preventative measures...I give him anywhere from 1000 to 1500 mg. per day. I purchase it through my Vet.

It is a little pricey...but I feel it is one of the best G/C supplements available for your dog.

Jet recently turned 2 and we started him on Synovi G3 softchews in May. He had always gotten stiff after hard playing. Since on the Synovi, he has not been stiff AT ALL... we are also looking at it as a preventative measure.

I get it from www.entirelypets.com. That is the most reasonable place I have found.

Good luck!

My Corndog is somewhere between 8 and 10. I give him Now Extra Strength G&C which I buy at Sun Harvest (a small health food-oriented grocery store chain). I buy the capsules and sprinkle the powder over his food. Last time I mistakenly bought the tablets, decided to drop one in his food to see what happened. No problem he eats the tab which is a bit less expensive than the cap. Will likely go back to the cap though as it is likely more easily absorbed.

Glad it seems to be helping Corndog!!! Give him an extra hug for me!!

I just realized that I haven't been taking my GC, or my Vit. E. No wonder my knees are killing me!!!

My Tasha Rose is going to be 9 years old and I think she needs to be on glucosamine. She's starting to be stiff when she get up. What's the best kind? Can you give her people kind or does it need to be for pets? How much do you give her? She's 95 lbs.

Welcome to the board! The Now I give Corndog (see post #4) is human grade and he is doing fine on it. I did go back to the capsule which I open and sprinkle over his food.

Look forward to seeing photos of Tasha Rose!

Im not trying to be a weiner here...but...you need to make sure that ANY glucosamine suppliments you are giving are compounded with hydrochloride (the bottle will say HCL) the sulfate compounded versions have been shown in dogs to have "sporatic" absorption so you may just be wasting your money thinking its helping, but really they are not getting the full benefit from it that they could be.
Emma takes 1500mg of Glucosamine HCL Chondrotin sulfate daily in the form of "novoflex" which i order through my work. We did xrays on her right elbow a while back and it shows she actually has quite bad arthritis and a bony spur on her radius...but...no limping. ive only seen her limp once after a REALLY hard hike up a mountain...and believe me, she runs the entire time way ahead of us, sleeps for a bit, gets stiff but by next morning is back to normal...im amazed at how well the suppliments have helped i started her preventatively at 7yrs of age. She also gets 1000mg of Wild Salmon and fish oils twice a day and 400IU of Vit E once daily.

Yesterday I bought a bottle of Glucosamine HCL 1,500 mg Plus MSM 1,500 mg by Schiff at Costco. I haven't give it to Denis yet.
What is dosage for 55lbs Lab? She's 2 years old.

Please be a weiner, Julie, because you're right! Aside from what you've posted on HCL, our vet has seen that dogs getting glucosamine without HCL, etc, also develop dull coats over time. And we all know that dull coats are cause for concerns.
What is the difference between glucosamine (HCl) and glucosamine sulfate?

Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) and glucosamine sulfate both work equally well in dogs. The sulfate form was originally used in Europe. The HCl form has recently become more popular because it is purer and provides more available glucosamine per unit weight and contains much less residual ash.

We use glucosamine supplements on all our dogs age 5 and over, - depending on age and whether is obvious arthritis suffering depends on what they get.
Hamish my own 14 yr old gets Arthramaax liquid - liquid can be better assimilated. He also gets adequan shots. At the age of 5 i was told by my then vet, that he would be on anti-inflammatories for the rest of his life and i would lose him at an early age as his arthritis was so severe even then. he was on anti-inflammatories for about 2 weeks, i didnt like how it made him feel so i took him of them and researched for an alternative. I put him on glucosamine, and if he had a flare up he would get a course of feverfew. i stood thro a terrible lecture from my vet about how bad i was and how irresposnbile, so i never went back there and found myself a more sympathetic vet!! Hamish celebrated his 14th birthday a month ago, and altho has severe athritis in his back legs and one front shoulder, still manages to rile the youngsters up to play on a regular basis!!!! he struggles going up stairs at times, so i just carry him up.!!!
Anyone over 5 gets glucosamine as a precautionary measure and anyone showing signs/symptoms of discomfort of arthritis get additional supplements as well.Hamish is the only one i have on adequan and arthramaax because of the severity, but for others i find,
Devils claw seems to help with the anti-inflammatory action, and boswellia is good as well. turmeric , ginger, seem to help, white willow is similar to a natural aspirin.
the glucosamine we use is hcl.

Gypsy's taking Cosequin DS. She's 12 1/2 with severe arthritis, so she is also taking Deramax.

I found the least expensive Cosequin DS on that well-known auction site (don't know if I can name IT here, but you know what I mean). The expiration date is 2010, and it is about 1/2 the price of any other vet medication site.

SynoviG3 is a new generation treatment for pets suffering from DJD. SynoviG3 is a unique, comprehensive combination supplying the arthritic patient with the highest concentration of Glucosamine HCI, Perna Canaliculus, Creatine Monohydrate, MSM, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Antioxidants. SynoviG3 contains antioxidants to break the degenerating free radical chain reaction as well as a synergistic anti-inflammatory combination of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and MSM. SynoviG3 is an excellent daily supplement for geriatric patients.

I usually get them from www.24hourpet.com (http://www.24hourpet.com) at a pretty good price if you buy in bulk.

I have a yellow lab that is about to be 12 and she was on Cosequin DS for the last 2 years and I didn't really find that to help her much at all. So I just changed her to Dasuquin about 2 weeks ago and I think that is working a lot better then the cosequin DS. She is also a 98lb lab.

Jack gets Arthrogen, which has both Glucosamine and CS in it. I think it has helped him some, even though he's only 6 and I give it to him as a preventative.
