View Full Version : Grip is on A DIET!!!
ZenCat 09-09-2004, 08:26 PM Can you belive it???? Five months ago I was tearing my hair and heart out frantically trying to get weight on my emaciated pup and now I'm looking at him and thinking I need to cut back his food a bit!!!!
YIPPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Really, he's not by any stretch of the imagination overweight, but since we've switched to Wellness he's getting a really SOLID look to him. He's still getting a raw breakfast, and the bag of Wellness says 2-2.5 cups for dogs 60-80 lbs and I'm giving him a little under 2. Think I'm going to make it about 1 3/4. Drum gets nearly 3 cups and is lean and strong. Also going to up his exercise (Greyhounds just don't seem to need or want as much daily as labs seem to) to keep him fit. He's also glossy, clear eyed, and in all respects the picture of health!
Had to share. Frankly, I'm quite PROUD to have to put my Gripper on a diet!!!
malweth 09-09-2004, 08:29 PM It's great to hear that Grip is doing so well after all his misfortunes. :)
Black Labbies 09-09-2004, 10:43 PM Grip is on A DIET!!!
NO WAY!
This sure is nicer to read than what you were posting 5 months ago about Grip :D.
Weight Watchers, here comes Grip :p:.
(Can you still feel his ribs?)
ZenCat 09-10-2004, 05:49 AM Only if I press really hard. The reason we noticed is that Brude and I and Grip were all laying on the bed. Grip was on his side and we were petting him and Brude said "Look, you can't see his cage anymore!" and it was true! Even when Grip was fully recovered and put the weight on steadily up to 70 lbs or something, when he lay on his side you could still clearly see the shape of his rib cage. Now you can't.
Dh has our digital camera with him on a business trip, but I'll take a few pictures of his (Grip's, not dh's ;) ) body when he gets home to show off my double-quilted pup!
d2roberts 09-10-2004, 08:28 AM How much does he weigh now? Over 70lbs???
That's incredible!
CanyonLabradors 09-10-2004, 08:59 AM After all he's gone through, it's nice to see that his food is finally agreeing with him and you are considering cutting back!
:)

Looking forward to seeing pictures of Mr. Chunky Monkey Grip :D .
silvrhand 09-10-2004, 02:09 PM I'd like to see the pictures too! :)
Does he still have the tummy tuck back by his legs? I wouldn't worry too much if you can still see his waistline, it's getting cold here already and Thunder has stopped shedding and his coat has really thickened up already making it harder to see his ribs. He's by no means overweight though.
Winter is coming already here!!!

ZenCat 09-10-2004, 03:50 PM There's still a tuck, but it's not nearly as defined. His undercarriage used to look exactly like Drum's - a real wasp waist. He's still the leanest lab at our dog park by a long shot. He's also the fastest. 3 other labs and a golden retriever gave up trying to play frisbee today at the park because he got it every time and finally ran off under a tree and layed down on it. Of course every time anyone chased Grip, big brother Drum bolted over and shouldered them off. Nobody messes with Drum's little bro'!
MISS LISA 09-10-2004, 10:40 PM LOL! I, too, have to agree .. this thread is way better to read about Grip and his food than the others. How much DOES he weigh now? And what was he again before obstruction surgery?
ZenCat 09-11-2004, 08:01 AM LOL. I'll have to get dh to weigh him when he gets home tomorrow. I can't lift him up and see over him to read the bathroom scale!
On an annoying note, last night my son - in a fit of pet-love - made "special treats" for the dogs and the hamsters. By the time I realized what he was up to, he had given the hamsters cheese and celery sandwiches (3 each, the size of a postage stamp) and cheese/kibble rollups to the dogs (2 slices of mild cheddar, with a colby cheese stick and about a tablespoon of kibble in the middle). I took out as much as I could from the hamster cages when I realized, but of course the dogs ate theirs.
Grip had a big soft pale pile of pudding poo just now which I took Brude over to as explanation for my "NO TREATS UNLESS I SAY IT'S OKAY!!!" lecture last night. Unfortunately he pooped after I'd already fed them breakfast or I would have withheld the meal. At least there was some cottage cheese and banana in the breakfast so it should help firm up the pudding.
ZenCat 09-12-2004, 07:35 PM Just weighed Grip, he's 70lbs as of tonight.
Now I'm confused. Unless just the couple of days of cutting back have made a difference. He was looking QUITE solid to me last week, but 70 is the weight he reached post-op that we thought looked perfect for him!
Now I've got my dh and the camera back ;) I'll see if I can get some pics that depict his weight, so I can see what you guys think.
HeatherA 09-13-2004, 03:35 PM In my experience with Theo - he can gain or lose a few pounds within a few days, or at least look that way. So maybe Grip is lucky that way.
ZenCat 09-13-2004, 05:32 PM Grip and Theo really *are* alike in so many ways, aren't they? And they have a PLAYDATE tomorrow!! WooHoo!!!
