subtitled: A Marine, the War, and a Dog Named Lava

I saw the book in a bookstore. It is the tale of a puppy discovered by Marines during a search mission, who is adopted by them and even eventually smuggled back into the U.S., where Lava now lives. I haven't read it but I guess it is getting a lot of publicity.......and I was wondering....

Here is its Amazon page:

I picked it up and thumbed through it at Walmart the other day, but I didn't buy it. I intend to read it soon, but there's another book I want to read first and at $20 each that one is second on the list. It looks like a good book, but I really like non-fiction, biographies, autobiographies, etc.

I reserved it at my Libray just waiting for them to notify me that there's a copy in for me.

I made the plunge and bought it this weekend. It definitely is an absorbing book, but not for the fainthearted.

Although it obviously ends happily (there are photos of the dog in California in the middle of the book as one big clue), the whole story of life in Iraq for a dog and soldier was kind of hair-raising, especially because this kind of pet adoption is discouraged by the military and lots of other soldiers who have tried to get dogs back here have failed (in fact, turns out there's an organization, called Military Mascots, that's made its mission trying to help soldiers get dogs they adopt overseas back home, though it's officially against military rules, especially in a war zone.)

Just finished it! He shares some personal experiences and observations about the war in Iraq as well as the story of Lava. I enjoyed it very much.

I must get this one this weekend and read it, it sounds good. Weird though I am reading Chicken soup for the animal lovers soul and last nigth before bed I read a story about a navy officer that found a chiuaua (sp) in his bunker and kept him with him during medic trips to local villages and then he got transfered and came back a year later saw the dog was still in the barricks and how much joy he brought to the men and that he had heard some years later that he was brought back to the US to live it was an amazing little story. SO now I have to read this book too. lol

I belong the the Doubleday book club, and actually saw this book on the list. Is this just a picture book with small subtitles, or is this an actual story book? Is it basically a memoir?

It is written by Jay Kopelman, a marine who while on duty in Fallujah found a puppy and fell in love with him. Against all odds and military regs, Jay kept the puppy and spent months working with various people and groups to get Lava out of Iraq and to his home in California. There are a few pictures but it's mainly the story of Lava's journey to his new home with Jay. I loved it!

I read the Reader's Digest version when it was published there and I loved it! I bought it off amazon.com a few weeks ago but haven't read the whole story yet. The short version was AWESOME though :D

I read it and loved it! You don't get all the warm fuzzies that you'd get from a Marley or Amazing Gracie type of book simply because it takes place in a war zone, but I think it's definitely worth the read. :thumb4:
