Years ago one of Merrick's first dog foods was Beef N More, touting beef as its #1 ingredient.

Right on the bag it said manufactured by Hereford Bi-Products - same company that consistently had routes through my area picking up dead animals off the farms & feedyards.

I don't want to spread any "rumors", but now I see it's 5 star rated & I've read good reviews. Has anyone visited the plant?

Never liked them...I've heard the same rumors many years ago that they were recyclers....read the book Food Pets Die for... written by Ann Martin

Oh that's gross - I hope it's not true. I have cans of Merrick (not feeding at the moment). Oh wait - isn't BG 100% meat canned by Merrick? I feed Charlie that.

Most Pet Food companies that use any rendered ingredients could contain animals that are downers...Nothing goes to waste....as long as the animal didn't die from disease, but old age, most times it is not going to hurt your dog...The meat used in Pet Food does not present as well as the supermarket meat...It is bruised, carcass, and cuts man won't purchase....

Most beef in Pet food is from cow...not steer...and secured from large Dairy farms when the cows no longer produce milk....even Natura uses these cows...I called to ask ...they are not downers..but they are old Dairy cows not steer..so in most cases they never leave the barn and are not free range fed...

For fact, I do know that Merrick "used" to be owned by Hereford Bi Products. I also know for a fact they picked up animals from Texas & Kansas feedyards; most of the carcasses were pumped full of antibiotics to try to keep them alive & implanted with hormones to increase growth.

I was shocked when I seen them listed on one of the analysis sites & they were a recommended food. I do not know if Hereford spun off Merrick or where they know get their raw materials at this time.
