ZenCat 04-16-2005, 03:57 PM Here you go... posted this for another member a few months ago when her dad bought Ol Roy against her wishes: Talk to him about vet bills. Tell him that Ol' Roy is considered by many to be the bottom of the barrel of dog foods, that they contain dangerous chemical preservatives and that phenobarbital (the drug they use to euthanize animals) has been detected in it in the past. By feeding a superior food, you are being proactively health conscious and will save lots of money avoiding vet visits for diarrhea, toxic "allergies" and even worse repercussions. Here's a dissection of Ol' Roy's ingredients (bear in mind this is my opinion but it is shared by many others): Ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, animal fat (preserved with BHA and citric acid), chicken by product meal, animal digest (source of beef flavor), brewers rice, salt, caramel color calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, chlorine chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, vitamin E supplement, niacin, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine monontrate, menadione sodium bisulfate complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, cobalt carbonate, folic acid and sodium selenite. Ground Corn: Definitely should NOT be listed FIRST! As carnivores, dogs should be eating a high quality animal protein source. Meat and bone meal: Not good. What kind of meat? By law, dog food companies are allowed to use rendered meat of any kind, including dead, dying and diseased animals, as well as euthanized dogs and cats (hence the phenobarbital). Corn gluten meal: A non-nutritive by-product, probably floor-sweepings. Soybean meal: Poor quality protein filler and a major source of allergies in many dogs. Animal Fat: What kind of animal? This ingredient could contain any of the following- ethunized dogs and cats, 4D meats, which means rotting, diseased farm animals, unfit for human consumption, rancid restaurant grease, rancid meat still in the plastic wrapper from grocery stores etc. BHA: An industrial preservative and is known to cause cancer. Chicken-by-product meal: As the name states this is a by-product and is considered not fit for human consumption. Animal digest: What kind of animal? This is another questionable waste product from a rendering plant. Brewers Rice: More filler/floor sweepings. Salt: Not necessary Caramel color: Why? It's sugar. Caramel color is: Dextrose (corn sugar), invert sugar, lactose (milk sugar), malt syrup (usually from barley malt), molasses (from cane), starch hydrolysates and fractions thereof (can include wheat), sucrose (cane or beet)." Also, acids, alkalis and salts are listed as additives which may be employed to assist the caramelization process. Dad of Jes 04-16-2005, 03:58 PM Most of the nutrition passes from the mouth right out of the butt. You actually end up feeding more (and not saving money) than if you feed a premium kibble. You'll save money by not having to go to the vet as often (reduced ear infections, better skin, etc.). dogslovecamping 04-16-2005, 03:59 PM thanks!!! |
