marinesniper76 03-20-2009, 09:28 AM Hello everyone this is Gracie and I would like to know what you think about the dog foods that I'm looking at they are (PURINA ONE ), ( PURINA DOG CHOW), (PEDIGREE),
(PURINA ALPO),And what do you think of (PIG EARS FOR DOGS)?(PURINA GOME-N-GET IT)?The (PURINA ONE ) and the (PURINA ALPO ) is from Petco here,,The other's are from Walmart....
Please help if you can Thank you from Gracie
jackATL 03-20-2009, 09:31 AM i will not buy food from grocery store. CHeck out your local petsmart or petco.
pig ears can make dog choke.
oh and ROx eats Eukanuba large breed puppy.
3colors 03-20-2009, 10:20 AM Garcie, I wouldn't feed my dogs any of the foods you listed. There are much better choices for you at PetCo.
However, if cost is a concern, and I know it can be, from your list the only one I would consider is Purina One.
KodahBear 03-20-2009, 10:40 AM I feed my guys Eagle Pack Holistic.
and I never feed pig ears, they are creepy to me
Labman 03-20-2009, 10:47 AM Likely any of those foods would be fine. I have seen fine results with both Purina and Purina 1. The one thing that is true is that the more corn, the more you must feed and the larger, softer the stools. That is an issue for you, not Gracie. She might love a big dish of Purina. If you do switch, do so over a week to avoid up setting her stomach. Also if you think she is over 4 months, go with an adult formula.
While many here prefer premium brands, I have never seen a convincing argument backing them in general. I have seen thousands of dogs thriving on common brands with good stools, no gas, shiny coats, good hips, etc.
I wouldn't feed pigs ears, or any other consumable chew. Too much chance of choking or intestinal blockage.
KodahBear 03-20-2009, 10:55 AM not impressed at all.
Not impressed by what? the OP choices or the other responses?
DakotasMom 03-20-2009, 11:32 AM Here are my recommendations on Labrador Retrievers & Dog Food (http://www.8pawsup.com/articles/health/dogfoodfeeding.html).
Best of luck and welcome to the board! :cheers2:
3lablady 03-20-2009, 11:39 AM I wouldn't buy any of those foods either for my dogs. I definitely wouldn't buy any dog food from Walmart. There are so many better foods with better ingredients than those listed.
not impressed by any of the op choices.
KC1979 03-20-2009, 03:01 PM Eukanuba is a great dog food for Labs... I get it at PETCO, it's a little costly but it's great for your dog
sk5371 03-20-2009, 03:13 PM I personally wouldn't feed my dogs any of those. Some good more natural ones are: Canidae, Wellness (Petco sells this now), and Taste of the Wild.
I had to do a ton of research due to one of my labs having allergies to food so I stay away from the cheeper foods and anything with Beet Pulp in it. We aren't positive that's what she's allergic to but when I stopped feeding her food with it she has been good & is off the prednisone.
These foods are a little more pricey but if you look at the ingredients you will recognize almost everything in it or have at least heard of it before in human foods. Below are some sites to check out. There are many more but this is a start.
www.wellnesspetfood.com (http://www.wellnesspetfood.com)
www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com (http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com)
www.canidae.com (http://www.canidae.com)
You can also search on Dog Food Reviews or Analysis and find some sites that review several brands so you can determine what is best for you.
ChocoRolo 03-20-2009, 03:17 PM Also feeding Eukanuba large breed puppy food with no problems at all. Cost and quality wise I think it is some where in the middle.
KodahBear 03-20-2009, 03:28 PM Can't you buy Eukanuba at Walmart? or is it Iams?
Can't you buy Eukanuba at Walmart? or is it Iams?
Iams is available at Walmart, not Eukanuba.
As for the original question, I, too, did not have good luck with a grocery store brand. There are better foods for not that much more money such as Kirkland and Taste of the Wild.
MSDOGS1976 03-20-2009, 08:00 PM If those are the ones that fit your budget, then I would go with Purina One. Iams would be a little better but cost more. There are better ones as others have mentioned, but the cost can go way up.
Good luck with your decision.
marinesniper76 03-24-2009, 08:01 AM This is Gracie and would like to know what you think about the dog food (TASTE OF THE WILD )?Pleas let me know I found there site and it said it had 32%protein is this any good? The wetlands, and the Highprairie,Brands..Thank You Gracie
3lablady 03-24-2009, 08:03 AM Taste of the Wild is a good food. It's grain free.
Luna's Person 03-24-2009, 11:07 AM My mentor has been breeding dogs for 35 years and feeds Purine ONE Lamb & Rice and her dogs look great. I know of a very well known cocker breeder that feeds Pedigree... so of those choices I personally would go with one of those 2 probably Purina ONE since Pedigree is very anti-breeder these days.
sk5371 03-24-2009, 11:49 AM Taste of the Wild is a good food with ingredients that you can identify. A friend that studies holistic animal care turned me on this and both of my girls love it. It's a life stages food so you can feed it from puppy to senior. The higher protein is good for labs since they are high energy and it typically allows the amount you feed them to be lower.
HeatherGlenES 03-24-2009, 11:50 AM I feed my English Setters and my Spaniel mix Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream since one of the Setters has food sensitivities and the other is a very picky eater. TOTW works very well for all my dogs. They have beautiful coats, clear eyes & ears, great muscle tone, energy to spare, and small stools but I have noticed that they do have "fishy" breath from time to time. To combat the bad breath I just brush their teeth more often.
I haven't tried the TOTW Wetland or High Prairie because they both contain chicken meal and that is on the sensitivity list for my Hamish.
ImWithThePyr 03-24-2009, 12:27 PM TOTW is a wonderful food. I've fed it to Maxwell in the past and it worked great for him.
