View Full Version : help me out - food causing sloppy poops?
pingsay 07-21-2009, 05:54 AM my dog , bonnie is 4 months old now. beginning i started feeding her with royal canine - Royal Canin Special Club A.3. but then few weeks back i changed her food to different brand called purina pro plan . now i m facing a small problem, she poop 2 - 3 times a day and her poop is not as solid as before , its all shapeless but i cant call it as diarhhea. and i feed her thrice a day (total amount 4 cups). so i m a little confused , is it because of the dog food or is it the amount or is it that she is suffering from some inflamation in her digestive system .
btw is Purina Pro Plan Chicken and Rice Formula Puppy Food good for labrador puppy????if not which dog food is worth trying ??
any advice is most welcome . thank u
any food, good or bad, can cause soft poops.
nanney1 07-21-2009, 07:13 AM Back off of the amount of the Pro Plan until the poop firms up. Then gradually increase the amount as needed.
doggiegoddess 07-21-2009, 10:59 AM You've changed food quality that eqates to feeding your kids McDonalds instead of say Red lobster. Royal Canine is a highly nutritive food. If you still would like to feed Pro Plan try adding a little cooked rice to it to solidify his waste. Also, check with your vet as to the appropriate amount to feed your adorable baby.
LadyBuckeye 07-21-2009, 01:55 PM doggiegoddess, sorry - don't share your opinion of Royal Canine. I would not feed it. Unfortunately, the OP is in China and not able to get some of the same foods that are so highly recommended here.
kodiesmom 07-21-2009, 04:24 PM I too agree that you should try to cut back a little on the food. When Kodie was 4 months old he was getting a total of 3 cups of food. The amount of food always depends on the activity level of the dog & quality of the food. Adding boiled, well cooked rice to the food is a good idea too. By the way, has your dog been checked by a vet for parasites? Good luck, keep us posted.
kodiesmom 07-21-2009, 04:26 PM Forgot to metnion, can you let us know what dog foods are available in China? There are many brands of food available in different countries. Once you post what you can get, I'm sure many on the forum will give their advice on the foods and offer suggestions.
northshoremb 07-21-2009, 07:29 PM I am in the process right now of weening my dog off Proplan cause its not even close to the quality I thought. Rated 1out of 6 on dogfoodanalysis.com
CanyonLabradors 07-21-2009, 08:12 PM Remember folks, Dogfoodanalysis.com is ONE PERSON's take on dog food. It's NOT the bible of dog food. And if you think it is, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.
Pro Plan is a good food. If it weren't, top breeders around the country from top kennels wouldn't feed their champion dogs the food.
I would personally cut back to 3 cups a day with your pup and see how that does for firming up the poop.

Amen brother! :D
Doppler 07-21-2009, 11:17 PM Proplan is a good food.
Four cups is a lot of food, at that age I'm usually feeding around 3 cups. You can compare the kcal/cup of each food to see if you are feeding the same kcal as before.
pingsay 07-22-2009, 04:37 AM well thank u so much guys . it helped me a lot.

kodiesmom 07-22-2009, 09:42 AM Aw, pingsay, thank you so much for your kind compliment about Kodie. I am sure Bonnie will grow up to be a fine looking labby. IMO all labs are just beautiful, When you are looking into foods, be careful because it can be a roller coaster ride for both you & your dog. It all comes down to how your dog reacts to them & how they do on it. My breeder & our vet said it's always best to stay with 1 source of protein & 1-2 sources of carbs in foods. Kodie was on 3 different foods before California Natural Lamb+Rice.
As everyone suggested, cut back, use some rice & see how Bonnie does. If you do decide to switch, that has to be done very slowly & I'm sure someone will tell you how, I forgot.
