They are beautiful. Okay, now the hurricane craze is getting out of hand. I don't believe the dogs should be euthenized because a hurricane is coming - don't they have cars down there that they could go to higher ground? Gee, maybe it will miss it altogether - stranger things have happened - It's not like it's the 1800's or something. I understand that Katrina was enough to send anyone over the edge - and that they are still suffering - but this just seems to be getting to hysteria point.

UPDATED: Sent e-mails to the Humane Society of MO (which went down for Katrina) and HSUS. Hopefully that will get the dogs out. If anyone has any update - it would be great.

Anybody know if transport is available? These dogs are very pretty. Is there a petfinder listing that would give additional info?

Here is a link to the shelter: http://www.co.collin.tx.us/animal_services/index.jsp

It is located in McKinney, which is a suburb north of Dallas.

I sent this link to a few friends in the Dallas area, and told them to forward it along to their friends.

I thought I would clarify this a bit from what I saw posted in Craigslist. THe Collin County Animal Shelter is another Texas shelter that does not do adoptions to the public. Their overflow is normally picked up by the SPCA. The SPCA in McKinney is one of the nation's largest disaster animal rescues. They are a mobile unit. They are not taking any shelter's overflow until after this next hurricane runs its course in case they are called upon to rescue Louisiana or Mississippi animals. The county animal shelter will let anyone come in and pick out a pet but they refer you to the SPCA and you fill out the SPCA application and pay their fees for the pup. The SPCA gets the funds without bearing the brunt of the cost of keeping the animal, the county bears the cost.

So to make a long story short, these animals would have been picked up by the SPCA but because they are in a holding pattern for a possible disaster, they are not picking up this week and the shelter is full.

I called SPCA to see if they would help out if we could find fosters. No help there. I was told to contact Collins County directely. I have tried to call, and no luck. I have email the shelter and Dede, with offers to help and word of this boards concern. Perhaps since this is a seldom seen emergency situation they would make an exception and while not adopting, allow fostering in Texas and neighboring states. DH says I can take a dog on a temp. basis.
I am so worried about these guys.

Has anyone heard if a rescue has stepped forward? These dogs are not shown on the found section for owner reclaimation. I know we could find these dogs homes. Ohhhh - this one is really getting to me. Those faces are so happy and healthy.

There are a couple of local rescues:
http://www.labrescuenorthtexas.org/index.php

http://www.dfwlabrescue.org/

Unfortunately they are usually full and in need of fosters. I can't adopt another dog right now, but I may be able to help in some other way if needed.

I got a response from the shelter, as follows:

RE: 9 PB labs awaiting Rescue‏
From: Animal Shelter (animalshelter@co.collin.tx.us)
Sent: Fri 8/29/08 2:14 PM
To: Elaine DeLucia (deluz59@hotmail.com)

Yes public can adopt from us now, but there is a few rules that apply…

the animal has to be available that day.
the people have to contact the SPCA and pre-pay for the spay/neuter
on the day of the appointment we take the animal to the spca and the owner can then pick it up there.
There is no fee on our end, just the fees @ the clinic for the spca.

I replied asking how many of the labs that need help were at the shelter. I am waiting to hear their status. So I can get one if I can get transport and someone to help me pull. Anyone else want yet another dog?

Oh yeah, I tried to call, but ending up e-mailing the two lab rescues that listed in the thread.

I have a list about 23 pages long of groups that do transport for rescues- it's state by state. Let me know if anyone wants it. They usually do it for free. I belong to the CalNeva list.

If We can get this list surely we can transport them out of there- those faces are too precious to die!!

Thanks Nell, I sent a PM and asked Best Buds for the list. If I could figure out transport I think I could scrounge up some foster homes between here and New Mexico. I think Terri (Mykal in spirt) had a list of potential adopters/fosters in Phoenix as well.

I would be interested in a foster and/or adoption .....but is NW Florida too far away for transport?? If so, let me know how else I can help:sos:

I'm not too far from McKinney (about 30-45 minutes), where this shelter is located. DH and I are willing to help if needed.

Dhana,

Over the course of the weekend I left two voice mails on McKinney's phone line and sent one email. I have yet to hear from anyone, so I can only assume they no longer need help.

Thanks, Carol. I did see a story on the news last night that they have taken in quite a few animals that were apparently in a shelter in the path of the hurricane, so they may be a bit overwhelmed (although it's rude not to return a call). If anything changes, please let me know.
