Ok, Tater will be 1 year on the 10th of December......He is on Diamond large breed puppy lamb and rice formula....
Now my question is when do you think a hunting dog should get there food switched to an Adult food.....He is high energy and isn't your typical house dog.....He runs 100 yard marks at least 3-4 times a week....He is high energy and is still in his last bit a training.
I have heard that dogs like Tater should still be fed there puppy food up to 14-18 months.....Just curious if you guys have any experience in that or know if that would be appropriate for him or not.
I am pretty sure my BF is leaning towards feeding him his puppy food until spring time.
Any experience with this or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)
Thanks!

We honestly quit feeding puppy food at about 8 months. I know everyone has a different opinion on when to switch. Our breeder and trainer felt that with both of our males, 6-8 months was long enough. We feed them Pro Plan Performance and are very happy with the results.
It really depends on who you talk to. Honestly, if you ask enough, you will find someone who doesn't believe in puppy food at all. (I know of a couple of breeders who don't allow puppy food for their puppies). He's almost a year, if you switched now, I doubt it would hurt him. I've had one vet say no longer than 6 months, another say all the way to a year. Even they disagree and they both raise and compete with labs. At this point, I think it's what you want.

I would switch to Adult also and have higher protein levels since he is so active. I think Diamond makes one with higher protein levels too. Around 25%-30%. Take a look at their website. If not there are other foods that are performance foods with higher protein levels. GOod luck Oh I just looked it up it's Diamond Performance and protein is 30%!!

There is alot of corn and by products in the Diamond Foods. Just thought I would mention that. Doesn't look like much of a meat based food.

Pup looks great.... Very beautiful and in the best of shape !
All depends on what you are feeding.... as far as ending puppy food...
At one year old all the possibilities are available...
Buy the best meat sourced diet you can afford.... EVO would be my choice because of Natura's Plant and quality...even mixing EVO into his reg diet will help muscle repair after a long day training...
I've taken DarwinsMom suggestion and add 1 cup of EVO RF to four cups of Cal Nat (or Red Meat Innova) 80/20 What a difference in energy and muscle tone the extra protein makes...

vets in the diamond web site say that their naturals large breed lamb & rice formula is good for both growth and maintaince, therefore it can be fed to adults. 27% protein and the naturals brands do not have any corn or meat by-products and the LB puppy lamb & rice is very similar to Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's, except with lamb. Diamond Natural has not had any recalls; how could they, they don't contain any corn gluten!
