These are labs that are in 2 shelters near me-not including the many, many other shelters out here! This is absurd...we can't take in any of these!! :(

Tammy and her volunteers only have so much room and they're currently full or she would be there in a heartbeat. There are just too many unwanted or abandoned dogs and puppies. :(

I was going to ask the same thing , linda.. How do you go about starting up a shelter.. I was really considering it.. wondering how you get started in on something like that.. Those pics make my heart hurt.. :(

Exactly as Barb said Linda. We operate on a foster home basis and can only take in Labs when we have space available as well as funding available to treat the dogs when needed.

We currently have I believe 6-7 labs that we just took in that are getting ready to undergo treatment for heartworms which is around $200 a piece AND they have to remain in the foster home for 4-6 weeks...which means for 4-6 weeks that is less dogs that we can adopt out meaning less that we can take in. Yes, I would be there in a heartbeat pulling as many as I could if I had space to put them in. :( I would assume that some will be adopted out maybe a few of the pups pulled by other groups but I suspect most will end up being put down in.

I started STLRR in the latter part of 2002 and would be happy to give you the low down on getting started if you would like. :)

Might I also mention that on top of the $200 a piece for heartworm treatment, all dogs are vaccinated, spayed and neutered and kept on flea preventative and heartworm preventative (if they are negative for heartworms)...so say $200 for treatment, $55-65 for spay/neuter, $25 or so for vaccines and exam plus preventative...and we only charge $175 for an adoption fee. It never levels out fairly! :o:

Yes, I would be VERY interested in knowing. I would love to start something like that up out here, the shelters in Vegas.. for the most part, are HORRIBLE.

We have the same problem here in central NC... litter after litter of lab or lab mix puppies, not to mention the grown dogs. We adopted Java in November and fostered two little puppies a month ago for the an breed rescue group here.

Shawn and I are trying to get more involved. We're a little afraid of our inexperience having a negative impact... so we're starting slowly.

Something I've talked a little bit about before is if there is a better way to network rescues... I thought about a website but there are already so many I don't know how to make one that works better. If anyone has ideas, maybe it could happen.
