View Full Version : Kennel Cough alert: East Coast Labfest folks
ZenCat 07-19-2004, 12:42 PM Hey everyone who attended the East Coast Lab Fest on Saturday July 17th:
Just got back from the vet with Grip (who was up coughing all night), and she believes he has kennel cough and put both dogs on antibiotics today. Drum also started coughing this morning.
I wanted to give you a heads up, since it is contagious, and also tell you that I am SO sorry to have exposed everyone to it. I'm hoping that because Grip spent most of his time in the water and not mingling that the salt water will have made his germ-sharing less potent.
:frown: :frown: :frown: :frown:
Oh no!! Poor babies!! I hope that they feel better! Bay had the kennel cough vaccine so hopefully he'll be alright? Your guys will be in our thoughts!
sasha's mom 07-19-2004, 12:49 PM Oh...what a shame. I hope Grip and Drum feel better very soon. They are both such beautiful boys.
(Love your new black-and-white siggy!)
Sarah 07-19-2004, 12:50 PM Hope Grip and Drum feel better soon! Will keep an eye out on Mia, but I think she was only kissing Bailey so we may be clear :)
HeatherA 07-19-2004, 02:03 PM I'll keep an eye on Theo - he did just finish a round of antibiotics yesterday for a bite he had, so hopefully that will have him protected, and he also is vaccinated for it.
Hope Grip and Drum feel better!
malweth 07-19-2004, 04:31 PM It's not your fault...you had no way of knowing.
Toby also has had the vaccine so hopefully that will keep the germs away.
ZenCat 07-19-2004, 05:39 PM Both my boys have had the vaccine, too. But I think there are different strains :(
Thank you ALL for being so understanding and wishing us well. Hard to believe Grip is sick, he was his usual leaping bounding gurgling self at the vet today, even though he *does* have a fever!
Fingers crossed nobody else starts to sound like they've got a hairball!!!
Becky/Buddy 07-19-2004, 05:54 PM Our vet seemed to think Buddy had swallowed water and it went "down the wrong pipe" and possibly into his lungs, which if left untreated would lead to aspirated pneumonia (sic?)...and that was what was causing the cough that he had a few weeks back. He started him on antibotics, and he is fine now.
Just a thought to run by you, it could have been all the water they were in. You never know...
Sarah 07-19-2004, 06:30 PM That's a really good point Becky! I wonder if the vet thought of that...
Okay, I am sort of wondering if Bailey has something... I'm such a worry wort... He is definitely doing the hack, not super frequently though. And it doesnt sound like a cough, it really sounds like he is barfing but nothing comes up. He does it like once every two hours. It was the same thing he was doing in the water... So i am still assuming it has something to do with that. Are there other symptoms?
Mom2Hershey 07-19-2004, 07:35 PM Oh just great LISA, thanks a lot!! I'm just kidding...how the heck did you know. I, too, would like to know about more symptoms..though the gang just polished off a 10" rolled rawhide so I think they are fine :D The girls have never had the kennel cough vaccinne. Hey, at least the weren't in heat and I didn't have to worry about them getting knocked up!:brow:
ZenCat 07-19-2004, 07:45 PM You guys should check out the threads in General Health for a better description of kennel cough, recent ones with Grip's name. First it was this exhaling through his nose with a bit of a gag at the end (I referred to it as heaving in my General Health thread) which the vet thought was allergy, so benadryl. And then post-Lab Fest he starting kind of "YAAAK!"ing. And then last night he was clearly coughing much of the night with a kind of "aaaAAARGHHHYAK" at the end. Nothing is coming up, but i've read they can get a bit of bile or foam with the yak at the end of the coughing. Other symptoms are runny eyes, nose, and fever. Grip had a slight fever, but no runny eyes or nose. It's also got an incubation period of a week or more, so if Bay is showing signs too, maybe it *IS* salt water irritation to their throats/lungs but based on Becky/Buddy's post, I'm glad I had the vet check him out and put him on antibiotics.
JenQuinn 07-19-2004, 07:58 PM I wonder if theo- the third of the water boy trio has any weid symptoms. Bailey seems fine- except for the fact that he's still licking his feet like crazy. Guess my boy has sensetive toes.
Sarah 07-19-2004, 08:03 PM Here's a thought. Maybe Mia has sore you-know-what from sitting down so much in the rocks to keep Bailey in line...If the boys have bloody paws (or sore paws), maybe Mia has a sore crotch? I think I'm reaching on this one...:D
HeatherA 07-19-2004, 09:00 PM No symptoms here. Theo seems to be doing fine. I'll keep you posted if anything changes.
Black Olive 07-19-2004, 09:52 PM Olive seems to be just fine, too. I'm sorry that Grip is sick though. A few months back Olive got kennel cough and it broke my heart to hear her coughing so bad. She would cough to the point of vomiting up white foam. A few days w/ medication and she was back to normal.
wettingherself 07-19-2004, 10:45 PM Mickey's had the vaccine, but I'll keep an eye on him and let you guys know if there's any signs.
His feet seem ok, oddly enough, he was just a bit pooped (haha) after all that playing.
