What is the best food to feed the puppy? She loves adult food more than puppy food. Also we read puppy food is not good for Labs, it makes them grow too fast, causing hip problems.

How old is your puppy? We switched our pups to adult food around 5 months old. They both did fine that way.

That's why you should use large breed puppy food. It does help in regulating growth.

7 weeks? I think puppy food is required at that point. Our lab Sierra just turned 1 yr and we just now started her on adult food. She is a slower grower/small for a lab. She is just 40lbs but, solid muscle. He explained if you remove the puppy from puppy food they are losing many nutrients in the food while they are still growing.

May want to look into that a little more before making change.

Good luck.

while surfing around on this site, i read a post that recommended reading labrador retrievers for dummies. Excellent book, btw. In the book, it does say feeding lab pups adult food because it does have the nutrients and vitamins young pups need.

When we got Rocky at 6weeks, the lady(who got him at a breeder) had him on Ol'Roy. Bad, runny stool. Switched that real quick. :) We still gave a bit of the Ol'Roy as to not overwhelm him with change. Got him on Nutrience Puppy. Then read the book and took their advice, he now gets a bit of the puppy stuff and bit of the adult (Eukanuba). He seems to love it.

I posted a reply on your other thread but forgot to add a link on choosing a puppy/dog food that might be of help to you. Here it is:

feed Nutro Natural Choice for large breed puppies. My foster pup loves it.

My breeder recommended puppy food for the first month she was home (until she's 12 weeks) then switch her to a large breed puppy food until she's 5-6 months (depending on how fast she grows)... then after that, she should be on adult formula.

When they recommend that labs shouldn't eat puppy food, it is usually meant that they shouldn't have puppy food for the entire first year, like most dogs (since once they reach a year, most dogs are no longer puppies). But since labs are bigger dogs, they grow faster, and so can eat adult food much earlier than other "average" or "medium" sized dogs. But at 7 weeks, your pup will need the nutrients found in most puppy food, so you should definitely probably give her a puppy formula for the first couple of weeks!

my two cents :2cents: :)

Bud was on IAMS when he was a puppy, but I didn't know better about dog food then.

I had my other dog who's 6 months old now on Nutro Natural Choice for puppy, and I changed her food because she was pooping about 5 or 6 times a day. Even my vet said she's not a fan of it because they have to eat so many cups a day if it's for a large breed dog. I'm going to switch her over to Chicken Soup, hopefully she does okay.
