Okay, before I start I know this question has been asked so many times. I have been reading through this forum over and over for a week. And I know I will get different answers and everyone's dog is different. But what fruits and veggies are okay for my little girl? Last night I made a smoothie with non-fat yogurt, banana, blue barries, ice and a small amount of milk. Are barries ok to give to our four legged friends? She just stared and i gave in and gave her a small amount. And the tip on freezing the banana's was a great one since she loves ice cubes she just could'nt get enough. Also I have been using Pedigree LB since we brought her home cause thats what she was on. And of course the first ingredient listed is corn, so I know it's mostly filler food. I have been looking to switch and need some help. I am not looking to go the natural diet but want a majority rule on some good brands. She is 4 months and was trying to wait till she was 6 months and swith her then cause I planned on puting her on adult food, but think it is wise for her to change. So let the answers flow, and I do appreciate everyones opinion.

Hi Paulo! On the fruits & veggies issue, I really don't know much, but I do know of a few that are dangerous for dogs:

--grapes
--raisins
--onions
--large quantities of carrots (these aren't "dangerous," and there's some debate over whether they're bad at all, but some people think that giving too many carrots can lead to ear infections -- people seem to agree that small quantities are fine.)

Also, Molly tends to get diarrhea if she eats to many fruits/veggies, so I limit her intake. I might fill her Kong with frozen green beans or frozen bananas, but then I make sure she doesn't get anything else except kibble that day or I can expect to have to get up and take her outside in the middle of the night. She has an awfully sensitive stomach, though, so your dog may be able to handle more.

On the dogfood issue, I feed Molly Kirkland Lamb & Rice. It has quality ingredients (no wheat, corn, or other common allergens), and is very affordable at $15 for a 40-pound bag. It's only sold at Costco, though -- I don't know if you have one near you. If not, Diamond is the same thing (same food, manufactured by the same company, just packaged as "Kirkland" for Costco) and is almost as affordable. Molly does great on it, and I know lots of other people on this board feed Diamond and Kirkland, but there are lots of good dogfoods out there -- I'm sure others will have more suggestions.

Good luck! :)

We started Ella (at 3 months) on Nutro- Large breed puppy food, but she used to poop a lot with that, and the vet also felt that she might be allergic to something (slight itching). She wanted us to buy hypoallergenic food from the clinic but we told her that we would do food trials and check it out as the itching was very mild. We read extensively and decided to weed out wheat, corn and soy- and found Natural choice (Canadian company) kibble. It had terrific ingredients but was pricey- Ella put on a lot of weight on that- and that is when more research pointed us to Kirkland's Lamb and Rice. We have used that for a few months now- the price is terrific and she looks good. We wanted to give her a change and bought the chicken and rice- wish we had done some reading on this web before we did that. That food caused loose poop and lots of gas and last week I read that it might be too rich for labs- so it is back to lamb and rice. We have found that wheat products do not suit her so are careful to avoid that completely in her treats as well.
