View Full Version : Kong filler ideas
lakehouse5 01-30-2009, 01:59 PM Okay, what dog doesn't like peanut butter???? Mine!!! I've never seen it in any dog I've known. But Miss Scout, at 16 weeks, just turned up her nose and walked away from a Kong with treats and sealed with peanut butter. We need an alternative to her chewing our arms and legs while she's teething. She doesn't like most things that are appropriate for dogs to chew.;)
I've read that yogurt might not be good because she is too young. Is that fact or opinion? So, if that's right, is there another sealant for the kong that dogs like and it's good for them?
Just thought I'd throw it out there before we are all shredded! She looks like an angel. but when she starts gnawing -- look out!
Tide's Mom 01-30-2009, 02:01 PM No idea about the yogurt but I use wet dog food as well in my girls kong.
how about unsweetened organic applesauce and freeze it.mixed with kibble.
Moose's Mom 01-30-2009, 02:24 PM We fill Moose's kong with dry kibble (not treats...he would get very fat:D) and we seal it with dome kibble that has been soaked in water to make it soft and mushy. Then we throw it in the freezer to get hard. It works great! It takes a bit of work to get the food out and I think the cold helped with his teeth coming too!
ImWithThePyr 01-30-2009, 02:43 PM I make "fruit smoothes".. I mix up all kinds of different fruits with no added sugar in the blender.. I use a baby carrot to plug up the small hole in the Kong and then fill it up, freeze over night. Maxwell loves it, but it can get messy.
My friend's Pyr doesn't like peanut butter either :)
stargazing1113 01-30-2009, 03:37 PM Sophie didn't like peanut butter at first. Around 20 weeks something seemed to click and she LOVES peanut butter now.
Other things I have put in there were pumpkin and yogurt (unsure about the calcium for pup) I also used kong ziggies for awhile but after a few weeks they seemed to cause tummy problems.
grizz 01-30-2009, 04:08 PM Apples, baby carrots, green beans, and some kibble. I know it sounds like alot of work but I owned and Iguana in past. Dogs are nothing compared to tropic pets.
elliotsmomma 01-30-2009, 04:31 PM Elliot's allergic to pb (along with a myraid of other things), so I used the canned version of his food, a couple tablespoons of pumpkin, and occasionally a tiny bit of his kibble. Just mix it all up, put in the Kong, and freeze :).
FYI; Elliot hated Kongs until he was about 8 months old and now he loves them
PopTop 01-30-2009, 04:38 PM Melody and Bandit love PB but the other ideas for some variety are great.
missretta 01-30-2009, 06:14 PM I like using canned food, green tripe specifically and then freeze. I don't fill it up, I use a butter knife and put the food around the top on the inside.
If you puppy likes carrots you can cut them a little shorter than the depth of the inside of the kong and cram them in there. Use shorter pieces to wedge the carrot sticks in there real tight. I find that some dogs don't care for carrots until they see another dog eating them. Kinda funny.
Cute puppy.
lolasmommy 01-30-2009, 10:41 PM Lola can't always tolerate a lot of PB so I smear a bit around the inside of the kong, put some duct tape to cover the hole, fill it with kibble or a couple of dog biscuits and water, and freeze standing up in a glass in the freezer. It doesn't upset her stomach and keeps her busy for around 30-45 minutes. :D
lakehouse5 01-31-2009, 03:26 PM Wow! The applesauce and kibble was a huge hit. 45 minutes of bliss for us all. Now she's standing at the freezer whining for another one . . . Thanks everyone for such great ideas. I plan to try them all!
greenfreak. 01-31-2009, 04:46 PM Can I hijack a second? Applesauce doesn't cause any soft stool for any of you? I was concerned about using it for that reason.
Great suggestions here, glad you found a hit for Miss Scout. :)
lakehouse5 02-02-2009, 09:41 AM No soft stool so far. She only gets one a day right now, so it may just be such a small amount it's not making a difference. It's also a small size kong since she's still a puppy.
snerk 02-02-2009, 10:54 PM Lots of responses so far, but what we do is give one third of a banana - to make it easy, we buy ripe bananas, slice them into thirds, and throw them into the freezer. Then when it's time to make one, we'll just peel them and squish them into the Kong. It's Kodi's fave. But PB does seem to be tempting too.
greenfreak. 02-03-2009, 07:13 AM I'd like to add that green beans are a hit - but only frozen. He doesn't like them soft. :D
Joanchek 03-22-2009, 04:49 PM I came upon this thread while looking for help with teething pain. I think the frozen applesauce might do the trick--frozen banana as well. Great Kong ideas! My Cricket loves hers, and it buys me 45 minutes every morning. I mix enough kibble to fill the kong with a couple of teaspoons of peanut butter so that it's good and sticky. I cover the small hole with a training treat, then layer stickykibble, lowfat cheese, carrots (lather rinse repeat) until it's packed tight and full. She does not chew her Kongs; she just licks the stuffing out. I freeze peanut butter in the dumbbell shaped puppy Kong for a nice popsicle on days where teething pain is really an issue.
My4blacklabs 03-22-2009, 04:56 PM I have used a mix of banana and peanut butter in our kongs. Peanut butter alone to fill a large kong is way to many calories. I have one of those magic bullet mixer, love it, put the banana in it and add peanut butter and mix it up to a pudding consistancy. Fill the kongs with it and freeze them. My dogs love it! I have to say I tasted it to and it's really good. A total hit in my house.
LadyBuckeye 03-22-2009, 05:21 PM 2% velveeta smeared in the inside then some canned dog food - they love it!
Royal 03-22-2009, 07:27 PM WOW these are great ideas!!!
I have been putting some kibble in the kong ( small red one) and sealing the top with PB. Jazz has loved it. Tonight I froze one and will give it to her tomorrow. Not sure if she will like it frozen or not. I will have to try some of these other ideas as well.
Keep the ideas coming! :)
LanAZ 03-22-2009, 08:56 PM We've also frozen mashed sweet potato and pumpkin in kongs.
I've never had a problem with applesauce - in fact, we give it to the (human) kids when they have diarrhea.
LabLoverNMiami 03-23-2009, 01:49 PM I stuff my kong with just about anything from yogurt-peanut butter-applesauce- mashed banana or cooked carrots and then freeze it til the goodies inside are mushy. Makes for a great summer time popsicle like snack on the back porch!
bjmom 03-23-2009, 02:53 PM Neat ideas!
Another sealant that I use - cream cheese.
I've never frozen a Kong before.

Cassidy'sDad 03-25-2009, 08:35 AM Awesome Ideas. Cassidy is 4 months today, and has been teething pretty good, so tonight and for the next few months, she is going to get all sorts of good "treats" in her kongs.
I feel like I am a bad dad, for not thinking up of any cool ideas like everyone else. :>
Mad Max 05-17-2009, 08:36 AM great suggestions! but we live in a tropical country and there are ants!!! :-( what can i use to make the dog food stay in the kong that's ant-resistant?
LadyBuckeye 05-17-2009, 08:55 AM I've never had an issue with the fire ants attacking the kong - leave the marrow bones out long enough and they will. I think the dogs eat the stuffing out of the frozen kongs within approx 45 minutes..and the way they move around with them...so far never an issue.
