View Full Version : Lisa, LFS new special puppy looking for a home

Because our life can never be easy....Here is our latest special case...

On saturday I picked up a puppy who was recued from a puppy mill. She even had a health certificate accompanying her...I guess the vet who did the health certificate did not even look at her. The fact that they had told me boy and when I looked I saw that she was a female should have tipped me off.... She is about 10 weeks and her new name is Lisa. At only 10 weeks she arrived with a bad case of Giardia, an upper respiratory infection, and a big orthopedic problem...How can a 10 weeks puppy have all this at once?!

First look at the pictures to see how sweet she is. She absolutely loves to be held and she can sleep for hours with her face inside your sweater. She has been treated for Giardia and she is still fighting her upper respiratory infection.

Due to bad breeding combined with a very small cage, no exercise, and bad food, both knees on her back legs have not developed properly (you can see this in the last two pictures, this is actually how she walks!). Her bad knees do not stop her from running around, playing, and following you everywhere. Because of her knees are not able to hold her up, right now she cannot learn a correct posture so we need to get in a try to fix the problem so that she can learn how to walk properly. In a couple of weeks (when she is over the infection and she has put some meat on those little bones) she will get an operation to try to fix some of the problems. The estimated cost of the operation alone (not including the recovery) is between $800-$1100 depending on what the vet finds once he gets in there. After that she will need therapy and time to recover. We don't know how she will be, hopefully better, but, she may never be perfect. This said, I am sure she will compensate with love and affection. She is truly one of the most affectionate and loving puppy I have ever met.

After the surgery we will try to find a foster or a permanent home willing to work with her through recovery and then hopefully someone will follow in love and accept that non-perfect dogs are truly special. Yes, Lisa is an special puppy looking for a special family!

Now we have to start raising money to pay for the operation. It will not be easy to find $1000 but we will try to do what we can to make her feel better. We like challenges. 1000s dollar operations have not stopped us in the past and they will not stop us this time either. Unfortunately in this year in which we had dogs with all possible issues, I have already applied to all possible grants out there. But hey, I will not give up. I am sure there is one more grant out there I can apply to or an angel willing to help those green eyes.

Keep your fingers crossed that she recovers well. I need all of you to think about her: she is really adorable I tell you!

Good thoughts and prayers are all welcome!

I will try LabMed but I have already applied to them for that litter of 10 puppies who got sick and I know they have restrictions on how many grants you can get. Worth a try anyway,

"The heartbreak happens all too often ? a pet owner is unable to
afford treatment and their sick or injured companion animal pays the
price. If the owner is elderly, disabled or on a fixed income, the
cost of care may be too much of a stretch for their pocketbook.
Perhaps they have been victimized by crime, property loss or a job
layoff and are experiencing a temporary financial hardship ? making it
too difficult to afford pet care. And some animals, brought to clinics
by Good Samaritans, don't have an owner to pay for treatment. Whatever
the situation, the fact remains the same: When sick or injured animals
are unable to receive veterinary care, they suffer. Through the AAHA

experiencing financial hardship."

Karen,

since you showed interested in Lisa I thought I would update you. She is actually a little worse than we initially thought. It turns out that on top of her legs issues she has a case of megaesophagus. This is a congenital problem which means that the esophagus is dilated (widened) and has lost its ability to contract and move food to the stomach. Food goes in, but it doesn't move to the stomach. It just builds up in the esophagus until it gets regurgitated. The regurgitation has caused saliva to get inhaled into her lungs and it caused pneumonia. So the poor girl has many strikes against her. Never the less she is a happy girl...

So the plan is

- in two days she is going to get a surgery to try to fix her esophagus. Hopefully she will survive that surgery. This will be around $800-$1000.
- after that she will spend a couple of weeks recovering where she will be fed through a tube in order for her esophagus to rest.
- if that goes well, she will get the surgery for her legs. another $1000

So keep your thoughts to her, she has a long way ahead of her. She is such a happy girl that we decided to try to find the money to give her a chance. If we do not operate her esophagus she will die. So we are now in the process of raising money for all her surgeries. Just keep your thoughts to her. The important day for her is Thursday. If anything we can tell ourselves that we try all we could. She is such a happy girl even with all she went through!

Hi everyone,

So far your thoughts have helped! Lisa first surgery was a success. The vet was happy. Of course I will not start relaxing for a couple more days when she is stable but given we were not sure she will survive the surgery I think this is a positive news. Tomorrow they will start feeding her with a tube as her esophagus is now pretty scarred and irritated. The biggest challenge for the next few days is to make sure she gets over the pneumonia and gains some strength. I don't want to be too positive as there is still a long road ahead but is one less step!

Update:

Donna,

she is doing very well. They took the dranage out of her chest. She is still getting fed with a tube now but she is not regurgitating which is a very good sign. the vet said that she is very happy. She is getting hold and loved by everyone at the vet office and she is running around every chance she gets. They told me I can go visit her and play with her so I plan to go on Saturday (the vet is about one hour from me). I will hold her and take pictures so everyone can see how she is doing. I cannot wait to see her again. So expect pictures on Saturday evening! The vet is VERY happy about her progresses. Thank you for thinking about her.

Today I drove one hour each way to go visit Lisa...and it was worth it every minute of it. First, she is now a lot bigger and she is finally putting some meat on those little bones. I spoke to the vet and he told me how pleased he is with the results. She is eating on her own (mushy food, but she is eating on her own!) and she is not regurgitating (probably for the first time in her life). They are feeding her on elevated bowls but simply on top of a box, nothing more than that. She is almost over the bad pneumonia and you can tell. She is a wiggly happy puppy, much more active than when she was at my house those first 3 days. As you can see she could not stay still long enough for me to take a picture. Only when she is on your laps she melts and stays still (well, chewing my sweater...). She absolutely loves people and she was ready to say hi and wag her little tail at 200 miles an hour to anyone who would walk by. I brought her a dog stockings full of toys there so she can have her own stockings on Christmas morning and one of the vets there was also bringing her a toy. When I left her, she was back in her crate going crazy over that little green squeaky toy you see in the picture. Everyone at the vet office loves her. She has the greatest personality and I hope the pictures can give you an idea of how much fun she is. She is so happy despite everything that she communicates love for life: everyone who meets her leaves with a smile even if she walks a little strangely.

Lisa is happy and she has the will to live and this will be a good help for her! As I said before, she will never be a dog with the perfect body but she will compensate in personality! She is special and I am sure one day we will find a special home for her.

Enjoy the picture and ignore my Saturday morning sleepy face... LOL

In picture 4 below you can see her next challenge (together with her new, no so fashionable, haircut!). This is how she walks (hoops is a better description). We are going to wait one more week and then we will operate on her knees and back legs. It is not clear if one operation will be enough but this will hopefully help for a while. We will know more we open her knees and look...well the vet will, I would faint immediately!

Just love that little girl! Just a look at her picture is enough to bring a smile to you face!! The picture on the paw bed with that little tongue sticking out should go on a coffee mug or T-shirts to sell for her benefit.

It is hard to explain but you look at her and all you can do is smile!

No explanation needed...you can't help but to smile seeing her face. What a tough situation she's been through and to come out of it so loving and adorable...that makes her incredible. I melt everytime I see her precious face. You keep getting bigger and stronger Lisa..we're all pulling for you sweetie!

There is nothing that stops her from smiling and being happy! She is started to walk but our vet told us that we will not really know how she will do for another 2 weeks when we expect to put her full weight on that leg. She has many stitches and she needs to stay on limited activity so he wants her to stay there for at least 2 weeks. To me it looks like she is already walking a little more straight up, see the picture. As you can see we have updated her fashionable haircut and we added a few piercing to keep her up with the trend, LOL. Between the two surgery, the spay and the hernia she is one big scar. But incredibly, nothing, absolutely nothing, lowers her spirit.

A cure story. While Jenny was there, Lisa made a mistake and went to the bathroom inside. The vet tech turned around and said, gently but firmly, "no" to Lisa and started reprimand her for peeing inside. As she was saying this, the vet came in the room, turned around to the vet teach and said "don't yell at Lisa" ..this said from a vet who is pretty strict. All the vet techs were smiling saying that he is in love with her.... And who would not!

Lisa is doing better and better. She is putting more weight on her leg and she walking more straight every day. Now that she is feeling better and running around she is showing us that she is a very active little puppy. She loves running after tennis balls and she likes to come in between your feet for protection. She is happier and happier everyday. The biggest problem we have right now is that everyone loves her so much at the vet that she is getting spoiled, LOL! In about one week she will be ready to go into a foster home. YEAHHH! After almost two months at the vet office it is time for her to get into a house. I will keep you posted.

After 6 weeks at the vet and two surgeries Lisa is finally in a foster home. She is very happy and she is finally learning to live in a home. This is Lisa's report from her first 24 hours in her foster home:
Biting your big foster brother ears is not acceptable...I still don't understand why but they really don't like it.
That thing that flaps in and out is a doggie door. It is great as I can go outside any time I want but I have to be careful as if I go in there too close after my foster brothers I get slapped in the face.
The house is not a race track, or so my foster mom says....but it is as fun as one!
You pee outside, you sleep inside....well I am still learning about this!
I don't really understand this no-biting thing. They let me doing it all the time at the vet office so I really really like it...but it sounds like my foster mom does not!
This is toys paradise, they are everywhere!
Days at my foster home are so much more tiring. I run, run, run and then I fall asleep right at my mom feet....It is so much fun to be in a home with 3 brothers and 1 sister...and they all look like me....now I am soooo tired....ZZZzzzz...

We have a pool for her to swim in and a brother and sister to play with...
I wish, I wish, I wish...LOL

Thanks so much for the update. I have been following her progress and saying prayers for her.

I know there are so many people who would do just about anything to be the family that got to bring Lisa home as their very own "new member" - I'm one of them even knowing that my chaotic house is not where she would thrive. Then I got to thinking about it - her she started out in life, that someone from above was watching over her to make sure Elena found her and that her heart was receptive to a major task. How this little girl represents the real meaning of so many things we all need in life, whether or not we want to admit it. She needed to have love - lots of it with no strings attached. She needed to have a fighting spirit of her own to not give up when the times were really rough. She wasn't afraid to ask for help, even if it were as quiet as the look in her eyes and she gave thanks - even if with a wet little tongue. And she had a sense of adventure - and one of humor as she adjusted to the doggy door in the face at her new home and learning to share all those toys with new brothers & sisters. And she knows how to say "tomorrow is another day" as she takes time to curl up at the feet of her guardian. Maybe her purpose on this earth was to teach alot of people how to live.
