I posted about my male 4yo cat Simon who started peeing in our dining room once our DS got mobile in the cat forum when it existed. I believe it was because he thought he would get trapped by DS in the laundry room where our litter ALWAYS was. I'm reposting the information to let everyone know that the litter retraining worked.

We had called the rescue where he came from and we were told to put him in a large crate with his litter food and water (luckily we own large labbies!). We did so for about 6 weeks and would let him out of the crate about 20 min per day - sounds cruel, but it was how we were told to do it. Lots of meowing the first couple of days.

We then ater 6 weeks confined him just to the room, but left the crate door open and the litter in the crate and moved his food and water out of the crate - he was confined to this room another 4 weeks.

We just recently let him loose through the entire house and put the litter in an easily accessible location upstairs for about 2-3 weeks and then just last weekend we moved the litter back to the laundry room. The litters are getting LOTS of use in the laundry room......so for now it's been a success.

We're teaching DS to look at the cats, but not to chase or attempt to touch them. This way, everyone wins.....what a relief.

It also kept him with his family - so it's good that it worked....
