Betty Peyton, director of Madison County Shelter in London OH, emailed me re: a beautiful chocolate lab boy that urgently needs to get out of the shelter. Please see email below from Betty:

Betty writes:

We have a stray senior( 8 years, maybe), choc lab male. Very nice
boy, does not mind the dogs as long as they are not too hyper, did
not mind the cats hissing at him, and listens very well to the staff.
I am attaching his pictures.

If you are an approved rescue that can help with this boy, please
contact betty@madisonhumane.org or call the shelter at 740-852-7387.

Thanks,

He's beautiful; distinguished with his gray.

Stories like Hershey's break my heart, more than any other. I don't understand neglecting any pet, but I REALLY don't understand betraying a senior dog's trust; breaking the bond that was supposed to be forever.

Yes, there could be some sad human story here too. There is a good and hard to believe chance, though, that there is no sad human story.

Hershey probably had a home; warmed someone's feet; barked when something seemed wrong; would curl up with an incredible grunt of contentment. You know that grunt; it is a privilege and joy to hear; such simple things and our labs our happy.

Hershey probably loved car rides, having his velvet ears rubbed. He was always there for them and for 8 years or so, they were there for him. Now he's at a high kill shelter with time and space running out. Hershey never stopped loving his family, being loyal, being steadfast, sharing in their joys and sorrows. What happened? A baby, a move? cuter puppy desired? no longer fun? kid went off to college? What happened that they felt they could toss his companionship, his devotion aside?

:( :(

The senior threads hurt me like no other.

Susan

Susan and Martha...he tugs at my heart as well...:( :(

His bio states that he came to the shelter by Dog Warden so I am wondering if he just wondered off and got lost? No one has come looking for him though...:( :(

I've only heard back from Camille. She said she wishes she had room for him, but doesn't. It was SO NICE of her to answer me.

Hopefully, one of the other Lab Rescues on the board here, can squeeze him in. He is Amazing!!

Unfortunatly, with the last two additions I am totally full. After reading what Susan wrote I was ready to drive out there tonight and get him, but it would just not be fair because he would have to be crated almost all the time until some dogs got adopted. What is even sadder is that he probably would never be adopted here because of his age. I had 3 calls today for people wanting to give up 7 and 8 year old labs. There are just so many:(

Having said all that, there is always that unknown factor. I despiratly searched for a foster home so I could help the little deaf girl last Friday. I never found one, but I did place 6 dogs last weekend so I had room to take her in. Who knows what could happen this weekend. I don't have any appointments lined up for this weekend yet though.

Hi everyone
Thanks so much for your concern for this lovely chocolate boy. I have not been able to access the web for a number of days due to computer problems, but I think I have it all figured out now.
The Madison County Shelter in London Ohio is really good to work with. I have been involved long distance via email and phone, with the help of U.S. lab rescue contacts, in getting labs out of this shelter. One chocolate lab which was named London that was at this shelter, is now working as a police dog, and is living with a police officer's family. I posted at this forum about him and some of you may recall the posts.

Thank you to all of you for posting and for trying to find a way to save Hershey.

I assume they are looking for a forever home and not interested in placing him in a resuce?

I'm tempted, but I'm not sure I can do 3 dogs. I might consider fostering working with a rescue in Brookville, OH

Hi MyDogsanMe...
That would be wonderful if you could foster Hershey. He needs to get out of the shelter asap. If you and the rescue need more info on Hershey, please contact Betty Peyton, shelter director, at betty@madisonhumane.org or phone her at the shelter at 740-852-7387

Hey guys!
Here's the update:

I was contacted last week about my other pups shots, whether the dogs will be indoor (YES!) and to schedule a time when I can get Hershey. He gets his rabies shot on Thursday (2/1) and will also get his microchip. I am hoping that someone from the shelter will be able to meet me halfway this weekend to pick him up (I am SO excited!) but it seems like they are a little shorthanded this week. Thanks for the support, everyone...I'll try to figure out the picture thing and post pics of the two when I get Hershey :)

I live about 2.5 hours from London, OH and was planning on driving the whole way. I happened to ask if anyone there could meet me halfway, and was told that yes, someone probably could. That was wonderful news...now I won't be traveling almost all day and will be able to spend some quality time with my new boy:)

Nope, that won't do at all! If you can't figure out the picture thing, I ...ummmm order? insist? demand? ... hmmm, those words don't sound polite. Okay, here: If you can't figure out the picture thing, I would be delighted to post some pictures for you. That way, while you figure out the pic thing, the rest of can enjoy pictures of Hershey and Schmall!!

I will PM you my email address. You would just need to send me your pics attached in their electronic/digital file form, for example: .jpg I would resize the photos if needed and then put them in their very own folder in my photobucket account and then post them for you.

In case you can't tell, I am very partial to seniors and very happy for Hershey and you! :)

Oh, he's beautiful and he snuggling up like he's always been there! :) :)

I have your 2 pics resized and uploaded. I sent you a reply email with the codes. Copy the code for a picture, paste it into a reply or new post; that's it. If you want both pics in one post, leave the post open, go back to the email and get the code for the other pic and then paste that into your post. Hit Sumit Reply and all the code stuff becomes pictures!

I can post them for you, but I don't want to do that when you aren't online and when I know at this point, you can post them yourself. I feel like if I post without your being here, I'm stealing your show.

If I PM the codes to you, they'll convert to pics. There are ways to prevent that or to get the code from the pics, but that gets more complicated than necessary.

I can't wait for you to show everyone this beautiful boy! Thank you for adopting a rescue, and a senior no less! :) :)

ok guys heres the scoop on the Big Day!

Hershey(we call him Sargeant, "Ol' Sarge") came home and got a nice bath, food, and a good brushing! He and Schmall love each other! Schmall jumps around him and tries to get him to play and the Sarge just looks at him like he's an idiot pup! Mostly, he sleeps, sleeps, sleeps! It was hard to get a pic of him awake, since every time we turned around, he was dozing off! This evening, we took him outside and ran around with him (he is absolutely beautiful at running, so coordinated and agile!) and Schmall and they had a blast chomping at the snow. We have introduced him to our families and everyone who met him thinks he is so wonderful! Thanks to Susan, I got some pics on here!
