How long does it take to know if a food is working? We started off really nicely on California Natural Chicken and Rice. (it's been 6 days. ) Now NIttany has soft serve quality poop, and Makena's BM's are small and only once per day.

How long should I stick it out before I switch foods? I'm hoping to give it another week or so.

I thought I had seen a thread like this one before, but couldn't find it.

Thanks everyone,
Kathryn

I agree with a week, although some ppl might suggest longer. I've seen results in just 2-3 days with some foods, so why wait?

Frustratingly, I really think it varies from dog to dog.

When I first started NB Potato & Duck years ago, Grip's chronic bad ears cleared up within 72 hours (and have never come back). Other foods I've seen changes over the course of a week, others over the course of a few weeks.

I think in the case of soft stools, though, that if they don't clear up by the end of a week they are probably not going to be improved by the food, unless its a case of overfeeding a particular food (which can definitely result in soft stools).

Have you tried reducing Nittany's feeding amount slightly? I have seen a difference by reducing by as little as a quarter cup.

Two of my guys have only small stools on Calif. Natural which is great for picking up. Autumn has larger stools and more often and not sure if it's because of how she gulps down her food and doesn't digest properly or not. If you have one having small stool then the food is working.

Hmmm. that's encouraging! It's almost half the size of Caniade. I'm hoping she does ok on it. Finding the *best* dog food for these dogs is driving me crazy!!!
This morning they both went. Makena's was normal, but small. Nittany's was a little firmer than soft serve. I'm going to give it a few more days, then switch Nittany back to Eagle pack if I don't see any change.
